Film lessons: early cinema for historians of science.Jesse Olszynko-Gryn - 2016 - British Journal for the History of Science 49 (2):279-286.
Despite much excellent work over the years, the vast history of scientific filmmaking is still largely unknown. Historians of science have long been concerned with visual culture, communication and the public sphere on the one hand, and with expertise, knowledge production and experimental practice on the other. Scientists, we know, drew pictures, took photographs and made three-dimensional models. Rather like models, films could not be printed in journals until the digital era, and this limited their usefulness as evidence. But that (...)

The Effects of Contextual and Wrongdoing Attributes on Organizational Employees' Whistleblowing Intentions Following Fraud.Shani N. Robinson, Jesse C. Robertson & Mary B. Curtis - 2012 - Journal of Business Ethics 106 (2):213-227.
Recent financial fraud legislation such as the Dodd–Frank Act and the Sarbanes–Oxley Act (U.S. House of Representatives, Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010, [H.R. 4173], 2010 ; U.S. House of Representatives, The Sarbanes–Oxley Act of 2002, Public Law 107-204 [H.R. 3763], 2002 ) relies heavily on whistleblowers for enforcement, and offers protection and incentives for whistleblowers. However, little is known about many aspects of the whistleblowing decision, especially the effects of contextual and wrongdoing attributes on organizational (...)

Thin blue lines: product placement and the drama of pregnancy testing in British cinema and television.Jesse Olszynko-Gryn - 2017 - British Journal for the History of Science 50 (3):495-520.
This article uses the case of pregnancy testing in Britain to investigate the process whereby new and often controversial reproductive technologies are made visible and normalized in mainstream entertainment media. It shows how in the 1980s and 1990s the then nascent product placement industry was instrumental in embedding pregnancy testing in British cinema and television's dramatic productions. In this period, the pregnancy-test close-up became a conventional trope and the thin blue lines associated with Unilever's Clearblue rose to prominence in mainstream (...)

Direct replications in the era of open sampling.Gabriele Paolacci & Jesse Chandler - 2018 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 41:e144.
Data collection in psychology increasingly relies on “open populations” of participants recruited online, which presents both opportunities and challenges for replication. Reduced costs and the possibility to access the same populations allows for more informative replications. However, researchers should ensure the directness of their replications by dealing with the threats of participant nonnaiveté and selection effects.

  7. Reviving Whorf: The return of linguistic relativity.Maria Francisca Reines & Jesse Prinz - 2009 - Philosophy Compass 4 (6):1022-1032.
The idea that natural languages shape the way we think in different ways was popularized by Benjamin Whorf, but then fell out of favor for lack of empirical support. But now, a new wave of research has been shifting the tide back toward linguistic relativity. The recent research can be interpreted in different ways, some trivial, some implausibly radical, and some both plausible and interesting. We introduce two theses that would have important implications if true: Habitual Whorfianism and Ontological Whorfianism. (...)

The Accounting Profession: Substantive Change and/or Image Management.Rodney K. Rogers, Jesse Dillard & Kristi Yuthas - 2005 - Journal of Business Ethics 58 (1-3):159-176.
. The accounting profession’s image and reputation is built upon the members of the profession acting with the “highest sense of integrity” in “the public interest” (AICPA, 2003, www.aicpa.org/about). The Enron debacle initiated the latest crisis facing the profession regarding its image and reputation. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) is the largest professional body representing the accounting profession and the one to which regulators have looked in establishing and upholding professional standards relating to the public practice of (...)

Schooling Teachers: Professionalism or disciplinary power?Terri Bourke, John Lidstone & Mary Ryan - 2015 - Educational Philosophy and Theory 47 (1):84-100.
Since public schooling was introduced in the nineteenth century, teachers in many western countries have endeavoured to achieve professional recognition. For a short period in the latter part of the twentieth century, professionalism was seen as a discourse of resistance or the ‘enemy’ of economic rationalism and performativity. However, more recently, governments have responded by ‘colonizing’ professionalism and imposing ‘standards’ whereby the concept is redefined. In this study, we analyse transcripts of interviews with 20 Queensland teachers and conclude that teachers’ (...)

    The Eleian Asylia: A Defence of the Ancient Texts.Graeme F. Bourke - 2011 - Hermes 139 (4):413-430.
A number of passages in ancient texts suggest that for much of the archaic and classical periods Eleia was considered a sacred and inviolable land, immune from invasion. While contemporary scholars, referring to the work of Georg Busolt and Eduard Meyer, reject the testimony of Polybios, Strabo, Diodoros and Phlegon in regard to the Eleian asylia, a careful examination of Busolt’S arguments reveals that they are highly speculative. MEYER offers little in addition. Instances of Eleian warfare in the ancient sources, (...)

Aquinas, Calvin, and Contemporary Protestant Thought. A Critique of Protestant Views on the Thought of Thomas Aquinas. [REVIEW]Jesse de Boer - 1986 - Review of Metaphysics 40 (2):406-408.
Arvin Vos has produced a thorough examination of how Protestant writers have diverged from and misunderstood the reflections of Thomas Aquinas on faith and reason, the role of rational theology, and nature and grace. It merits the kind words of Ralph McInerny in the Foreword and may improve understanding between Roman Catholic and Protestant Christians. I shall sketch a couple of points at which Protestant critics have objected to the work of Schoolmen and of Aquinas, and shall conclude with a (...)
