As models of living beings acting in a real world biorobots undergo an accelerated “philogenic” complexification. The first efficient robots performed simple animal behaviours (e.g., those of ants, crickets) and later on isolated elementary behaviours of complex beings. The increasing complexity of the tasks robots are dedicated to is matched by an increasing complexity and versatility of the architectures now supporting conditioning or even elementary planning.

After critical appraisal of mathematical and biological characteristics of the model, we discuss how a classical hippocampal neural network expresses functions similar to those of the chaotic model, and then present an alternative stimulus-driven chaotic random recurrent neural network (RRNN) that learns patterns as well as sequences, and controls the navigation of a mobile robot.

La catégorie du banquet public existait dans la société romaine qui opposait convivium privatum et convivium publicum. Contrairement à l’idée reçue, le terme latin epulum ne désignait pas toujours, et pas seulement, le banquet public, car les mots convivium et cena pouvaient aussi s’y appliquer. À l’origine, les banquets publics – banquets rituels ou banquets d’investiture des prêtres et magistrats (cena aditialis) – ne concernaient que les prêtres et les magistrats, parfois les sénateurs (Epulum Iovis). Ces participants disposaient du epulandi (...) publice ius. En 217, le banquet des Saturnales fut ouvert au populus, mais ce cas resta isolé dans le cadre rituel. En revanche, à partir du début du IIe siècle, les nobles prirent l’habitude d’offrir des banquets au peuple lors de leurs funérailles familiales, puis au Ier siècle, les imperatores le firent d’abord lors de la Dîme d’Hercule puis lors de leurs triomphes. Dans ces circonstances, le convivium publicum devenait alors l’epulum populi romani et l’epulandi publice ius concernait les membres du populus, sans doute répertoriés sur une liste.Une telle évolution montre que la présence du populus n’était pas, sous la République, consubstantielle au banquet public. Elle montre aussi que le caractère public d’un banquet n’était pas déterminé par le statut du donateur ou l’origine des fonds mais par la qualité de représentants de la cité des bénéficiaires (magistrats, sénateurs ou citoyens), ainsi que par sa localisation dans un lieu public. Using the guise of a simple supper of commemoration of the hundredth anniversary of the birth of a charismatic Protestant pastor, who had gathered around him a community of devoted disciples in a small village in Norway, Babette’s Feast by Isak Dinesen shows us a banquet in which, through the food prepared with the eye of an artist, the senses are awakened for the first time to a kind of experience where what is corporal and what is spiritual cease to (...) be at odds with each other. Thus, a reconciliation of a lost unity between the body and the soul, matter and spirit, is celebrated and achieved. From this first step, with which the fundamental internal fragmentation is overcome, the other levels of unity (unity with others, with the cosmos, and with God) occur in a chain sequence, so to speak. As in all religious situations, there occurs here the coming together of two orders that seem unreconciliable: the temporal and the eternal, the limited and the infinite, the profane and the sacred. The mediator between both orders is Babette, who takes on a genuine sacerdotal function. However, there is an unexpected inversion, and paradoxically what is profane and mundane comes to the rescue of what is spiritual and sacred. (shrink)

Des fouilles récentes à Paroikia de Paros, près du port antique, ont mis au jour une vaste nécropole en usage du vir s. av. J.-C. au nr s. ap. J.-C. Parmi les nombreuses trouvailles figurent trois stèles funéraires inscrites du nr s. ap. J.-C. avec représentation de banquets funéraires, thème particulièrement courant à Paros. A l'occasion de cette découverte, on a étudié dans les réserves du Musée d'autres reliefs, trouvailles plus anciennes, que l'on peut attribuer à deux types différents, sous (...) lesquels se classent aussi les trois nouvelles œuvres. Cette étude a fourni parallèlement des preuves de l'existence à Paros de différents ateliers de sculpture, apparemment très actifs à cette époque tardive de l'Antiquité grecque. (shrink)

O presente artigo trata da influência socrático-platônica sobre o pensamento de Epicuro, evidenciando um vocabulário comum à ética grega antiga, a saber: as noções de logismós, phrónesis, hedoné e philia. Tais noções são examinadas no contexto da Carta a Meneceu, das Máximas Principais e das Sentenças Vaticanas.

Este artículo investiga las narraciones de 1 Sam 9 y 1 Sam 28 a la luz del trasfondo más amplio del contexto sacrificial en el primer libro de Samuel. En concreto, este estudio muestra cómo los episodios, unidos por la escena de un banquete y el reparto de la comida sagrada, constituyen las partes de un sistema simbólico definido que, en sus resultados, es capaz de describir, definir y dirigir las relaciones entre los participantes en el ritual y la (...) deidad. A través del ejemplo de los banquetes de Saúl, primero con Samuel y luego con una nigromante en la aldea de En Dor, el texto de 1Sam define una jerarquía precisa entre la práctica cultual y la monarquía naciente en Israel. Witty, sexy and radiantly beautiful, the Shelley translationof Plato's great Dialogue on Love is by far the best in theEnglish language. It has been described as conveying "much of the vivid life, the grace of movement, and the luminous beauty of Plato" -- "the poetry of a philosopher rendered by the prose of a poet." Although a masterpiece in its own right, the Shelley translation was suppressed and then bowdlerized for well over a century. In 19th century Britain, male love (...) -- at the heart of the dialogue -- was unmentionable. The Banquet and Shelley's accompanying essay, "A Discourse on the Manners of the Antient Greeks," were not published in their entirety until 1931, and then in an edition of 100 copies intended "for private circulation only." The Pagan Press edition is complete, authentic and readable. For the first time this work has received the editing and typography it deserves. (shrink)

Cette pratique ludique, source d’émulations entre les buveurs, consistait à projeter d’un geste habile et maîtrisé la dernière goutte de vin de sa coupe sur une cible prédéfinie. Le vin, médiateur de sociabilité, est dans ce cadre à la fois la modalité et l’instrument du jeu, tandis que la vaisselle de banquet est détournée de son usage premier. À partir d’une (...) sélection de vases italiotes, cet article questionne l’agentivité féminine associée à ce divertissement habituellement considéré comme masculin. À la fois cible animée, enjeu du lancer, joueuse ou accessoire ludique, la présence féminine mise en scène dans le champ métaphorique de l’image est multiple et protéiforme. À l’aide de jeux visuels, les imagiers italiotes se jouent des codes et des normes établies en proposant une vision renouvelée, réelle ou fantasmée, autour de la culture du vin. (shrink)

Si en la tradición cristiana suele subrayarse el carácter penitencial del “pescado”, el presente estudio pretende acercarnos a los textos de la tradición neotestamentaria y judía que lo presentan como un elemento del banquete escatológico, subrayándose, sobre todo, su perspectiva mesiánica y escatológica.

Les banquets politiques – réformistes, républicains, démocratiques – se multiplièrent durant les années 1847-1849. Les sources, trop souvent silencieuses sur l’importance respective des hommes et des femmes dans ces manifestations, permettent malgré tout de percevoir la très nette prédominance masculine. Quand une présence féminine était tolérée, ces convives exceptionnelles, considérées comme des fleurs éminemment décoratives, pouvaient se trouver reléguées en marge du banquet, à la lisière des tables. Quelques cas de banquets de femmes sont attestés, parfois organisés par des femmes (...) catholiques et républicaines, qui prenaient soin de rappeler leurs consœurs à leurs devoirs d’épouses et de mères, parfois par des femmes socialistes, dont les initiatives engendraient sarcasmes et pamphlets. English summary: This book studies a book from the Second Sophistic, which revives the erudite discussions held at banquets by Plutarch and his various guests. The book proposes to study the place and function of medical theories and to systematically explore the relationship between medicine and the banquet. This convivial manifestation, as it is presented, has therapeutic and preventive virtues for the individual and the group with whom he associates. This study presents an unexplored side of Plutarchian thinking: he sees (...) the banquet as a therapy for the body and as a moderator of passions, and also as a regulator of human relationships. French text. French description: Ce livre se penche sur une oeuvre de la Seconde Sophistique qui ravive les discussions erudites tenues lors de banquets entre Plutarque et differents convives. Il propose d'y etudier la place et la fonction des theories medicales et d'explorer de facon systematique la relation, peu etudiee jusqu'a ce jour, qui unit les domaines de la medecine et du banquet. Cette manifestation conviviale, telle qu'elle est presentee et idealisee dans les Propos de Table, a des vertus therapeutiques et preventives pour l'individu et le groupe qui lui est associe. Pour rendre ces vertus manifestes, les convives et le narrateur invoquent differentes theories medicales, employant des termes lies a la medecine et a la physiologie des corps. Ainsi le president du banquet, les discussions philosophiques, le dosage du vin et celui de la nourriture rappellent le medecin a l'oeuvre et les differents types de remedes qu'il prescrit. Mais les Propos de Table operent aussi un rapprochement entre la conduite au banquet, la pathologie du corps et les comportements sociaux et politiques, symptomatiques d'un inflechissement par Plutarque des banquets savants et des theories medicales vers ses partis pris ideologiques.Cette etude met en evidence un pan inexplore de la pensee de Plutarque: sa vision du banquet concu non seulement comme un remede pour le corps et comme un moderateur des passions, mais aussi comme un regulateur des relations humaines. Le banquet constituerait ainsi aux yeux de l'auteur un traitement preventif efficace a une epoque ou l'equilibre entre les membres de la communaute multiethnique, le respect et la coexistence pacifique s'imposent comme des valeurs indispensables. After Agathon's speech in Plato's Symposium, Socrates takes a little time to make some comments about it. One of these comments is that the speech brought Gorgias to his memory (198 c 2-5). In this article we intend to track down in three complementary levels the diverse reasons why this recollection took place: (A) regarding the form of the speech, we will try to show that there is an equivalence in how both Gorgias in his Encomium to Helen and the (...) character of Agathon in the Symposium construct their respective logoi; (B) regarding the style of writing, we will see the frequent use in the poet's speech of the rhetoric resource of "saying things alike'' (isa legein) usually ascribed to Gorgias; (C) finally, regarding the contents of both speeches we will try to show that many of the elements used by the sophist to praise the logos in his Encomium to Helen may be found, more or less, in Agathon's praise of Eros. The article will try to show, thus, which are the precise elements that may have made Socrates remember Gorgias after listening to the tragic poet. (shrink)

Recent readings of Kierkegaard's Works of Love have admirably shown how his apparent reservations about romantic love can be deflected on his own terms by imbuing them with some of the moral rigor of neighbor‐love. This paper argues however that these readings must be complemented by the reverse argument, which would show how some of the qualities of romantic loves are in fact preserved in neighbor‐love. By drawing on his dialectics of sensate love, psychical love, spiritual love, and self‐love, I (...) show how Kierkegaard believes neighbor‐love should be impartial and yet exhibit some of the character of preferential romantic loves.
