Der Text greift Peter Bürgers Diskussion der künstlerischen Avantgarde auf und stellt dessen Diktum infrage, dass die avantgardistische Intention, Kunst und Leben zu vereinen, dauerhaft gescheitert sei. Im hermeneutischen Verfahren wird Architektur als Medium erschlossen, indem pragmatische Weltbeziehung und ästhetisierte Wahrnehmung zusammenfallen (können). Zwei Formen der Integration von lebensweltlicher Praxis und Kunst werden dabei rekonstruiert: ein Zusammenspiel von Funktionalität und »interesselosem Wohlgefallen« (Kant) sowie eine funktionalisierte Stilisierung architektonischer Formen. Vom Standpunkt einer dialektischen Geschichtsinterpretation wird auf diesem Wege die historische (...) Intention der Avantgarde als kritischer Maßstab zur Beurteilung zeitgenössischer Architektur aktualisiert. Ausgehend von den Ausführungen wird abschließend ein Ausblick auf Grundzüge ästhetischer Bildung eröffnet. (shrink)

Avantgarde und Avantgarde-Forschung befinden sich aufgrund der mit dem Begriff verbundenen Verzeitlichung und Verräumlichung in einer permanenten Erklärungs- und Rechtfertigungssituation. Von Beginn an für tot erklärt, "spukt" das "Gespenst der Avantgarde" durch Kunst und Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts. Es hat grundsätzliche Fragen gestellt, die dieser Band diskutiert. Dazu gehört das immer wieder behauptete "Scheitern" der historischen Avantgarden, ihre Aufhebung in der Post-Avantgarde, gleichzeitig ihre (historische) Notwendigkeit, ihr Verhältnis zur Moderne und ihre zunehmende Vereinnahmung durch den Modernismus. Untersucht wird auch die Bedeutung der Avantgarde für und ihre Infragestellung durch Prozesse gesellschaftlicher Ästhetisierung und ihre aktuellen Möglichkeiten und Erscheinungsformen in Kunst und Gesellschaft. So kommt nicht nur die heutige Situation von Avantgarde und Avantgarde-Forschung in den Blick, es sollen auch neue Perspektiven auf Kunst und Literatur des 20. Avantgarde in Halle: The Invention of Aesthetics and the Aestheticization of Christianity. The foundation of scholarly aesthetics by the Halle philosopher Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten and Georg Friedrich Meier in the middle of the 18th century took place within a milieu that was shaped by both pietism and the Enlightenment. Martin Fritz demonstrates that aesthetics in Halle itself can be considered a synthesis of pietism and Enlightenment ideas. The sensualization of basic Christian concepts is of eminent relevance for these aesthetics, (...) in order to reinvent the pietistic striving for intensive religious experiences through such „aestheticization.“ The romantic idea of „Kunstreligion“, which continues to be significant in cultural life today, is also based on this programmatic notion of aestheticization. Building on this historical background, this article’s concluding systematic considerations argue for a theological revaluation of pertinent contemporary cultural phenomena. (shrink)

Charkiw in der Ukraine war in den 1920er-Jahren ein aktives Zentrum der Avantgarde, das mehrfach an Peripherien gelegen war: Räumlich abseits der Machtzentren und zeitlich in der letzten Phase der Avantgarde positioniert, differierten auch die künstlerischen Praktiken des Panfuturismus und des Konstruktiven Dynamismus von tonangebenden Erscheinungen. So wurden etwa in der späten Phase der Avantgarde überholte Konzepte der Abstraktion mit funktionalistischen Ansätzen vereint. Die Formationen Nova Generacija (1927-1931) und Avanhard (1925-1929) mit Mychajl' Semenko und Valerijan Poliscuk an (...) der Spitze interagierten dabei rege mit den Avantgarden in Ost und West.0Vera Faber analysiert nun erstmals umfassend die dabei zum Einsatz kommenden polemischen Praktiken der Aus-, Ab- und Eingrenzung - anhand von Programmtexten und literarischen sowie künstlerischen Arbeiten -- Cover page [4]. V članku poskušam analizirati nekatere značilne diskurze posvečene »neuspehu avantgarde« ter tako osvetliti latentno strukturo zanikanja / potlačitve / izključitve, na kateri leži temelj zahodne moderne umetnosti, se pravi strukturo, ki je bila razvita kot druga plat samooblikovanja umetnosti v dobi, ko je nastal mit o njeni avtonomiji. Odkar so moderne »umetnosti« padle v rodovno kategorijo »Umetnost«, ta daje videz, da je postajala vedno bolj obrobna, da pa je hkrati pridobivala v zameno več privilegijev. Da bi se lahko vzpostavila (...) v sublimiranem območju visoke kulture, je bila umetnost morda prisiljena zavreči vse, česar ni bilo mogoče udobno uskladiti z njeno samodefinicijo. Medtem ko so dualizem med »visoko« in »nizko« kulturo prenehali utemeljevati v realnosti, so izumili nov pripomoček, da bi zavaroval navidezne meje, ter da bi pospešil proces avtonomizacije umetnosti. Modernizem v tem primeru služi kot bolj izpopolnjen ter okrepljeni vzvod potlačitve; vsebuje tudi uporniško avantgardo, ki služi za začasno sprostitev potlačenega. Medsebojna povezanost med modernizmom in avantgardo se bo tako pokazala kot spopad med estetiko nadzora in estetiko anarhije. (shrink)

V Heteronomiji umetnosti in avantgard se Aleš Erjavec ukvarja zlasti z radikalnimi politiziranimi avantgardami, se pravi s futurizmom in s konstruktivizmom, in tako nadaljuje svoje delo z začetka osemdesetih let 20. stoletja, ko je pričel svojo "ekspedicijo na severni pol človeškega duha". V pričujoči študiji so tako posebne pozornosti deležne radikalne avantgarde ter politična in ideološka vloga novejše umetnosti, še zlasti one z vzhoda. Nekateri vidijo v teh avantgardah skrajno obliko modernizma, drugi jih obravnavajo kot specifični vzhodnoevropski pojav, tretji (...) pa jih preprosto zreducirajo na njihove zahodne ekvivalente. Podobna ali celo še bolj neustrezna podoba spremlja postsocialistične avantgarde oziroma avantgarde tretje generacije. Te so bile imenovane nekonformistična in neuradna umetnost, vzhodni modernizem, konceptualna umetnost itd. Erjavec dokazuje, da se estetsko krilo teh avantgard v resnici navezuje na estetske avantgarde z začetka 20. stoletja, s čemer so klasične avantagarde s postsocializmom doživele svojo postmoderno ponovitev. In kakor avantgarde nenehno reflektirajo svoj odnos do siceršnje umetnosti, tako tudi estetika kot del filozofije reflektira svoj odnos do umetnosti in avantgarde, pa če ju dojemamo kot avtonomni ali heteronomni. V nadaljevanju obravnava novejšo zgodovino umetnosti in kulture v Vzhodni Evropi. (shrink)

In diesem Versuch, die griechische Sophistik als einheitliches Phänomen neu zu deuten, wendet sich der Verfasser gegen weitverbreitete Standpunkte der Interpretation, die die Sophistik insgesamt als eine Art Aufklärungsphilosophie ansieht. Dementgegen ist die Sophistik dem archaischen Denken von Lyrik und früher Vorsokratik eng und vorwiegend konservativ verpflichtet. Ihr Denken besteht in einer ständigen Abstimmung herrschender Situationen auf Kosten eigener rationaler Konsequenz und kann deshalb als Philosophie überhaupt nicht gelten wollen. Anliegen der Sophisten ist es denn auch, dem Menschen in der (...) Mittellosigkeit (»Amechania«) als dem Element seines Daseins ein Organ aufzuzeigen, mit dem er sein Leben in einer erfolgreichen Balance zu halten vermag. Dieses Organ ist die Sprache und ihre Kunstgerechte Verwendung. Der normalen, jeden betreffenden Bedingtheit des Lebens entsprechen somit normale, jedem zugängliche Methoden der Selbstbehauptung. Diese Anwaltschaft für das Normale macht die Sophistik zu einer beispielhaften Verteidigung des beengten Lebens gegen die überfordernden Ansprüche des Unbedingten. (shrink)

Die Physikalisierung der Psychologie war für Carnap Teil eines Programms, das die Sonderstellung der Psychologie als Wissenschaft des menschlichen Denkens und Fühlens als Illusion entlarven und zeigen sollte, die Psychologie sei ein Teil der Physik wie alle anderen Wissenschaften auch. In etwas anderer Motivation zielte Carnaps Physikalismus ausserdem auf eine Überwindung der Trennung von Geistes–wissenschaften und Naturwissenschaften: Erwiese sich die Psychologie sich als physikalisierbar, wäre das ein wesentlicher Schritt für die Vereinheitlichung der Wissenschaften in Gestalt einer enzyklopädischen „Einheitswissenschaft“ überhaupt. Carnaps (...) Argument für die Physikalisierbarkeit der Psychologie als ganzer basierte auf der These der Physikalisierbarkeit der Graphologie als zentraler Teildisziplin der Psychologie. Die Graphologie sei der begrifflich am weitesten fortgeschrittene und deshalb am ehesten physikalisierbare Teil der Psychologie. Das verdanke sie in erster Linie den wegweisenden Arbeiten Ludwig Klages’. Erweise sich die Graphologie als physikalisierbar, stehe einer durchgehenden Physikalisierung aller Wissenschaften nichts mehr im Wege. Als Episode in Carnaps philosophischer Entwicklung ist dem Graphologieprojekt bis heute kaum Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt worden. Das ist ein Versäumnis, manifestiert sich in diesem Projekt doch der allgemeine Stil des Carnapschen Philosophierens besonders deutlich, nämlich von einer sehr abstrakten und idealisierten Vorstellung von Wissenschaft ausgehend weitreichende philosophische Folgerungen zu ziehen. This volume consists of selected essays on the art and aesthetics of the avantgarde, contemporary art, and postsocialist culture by the internationally renowned Slovenian philosopher and art theorist Aleš Erjavec.

English summary: What does Dada mean? The answer lies in the distinction between the perceptible and the designation and the failure to mediate discursively between the two. With the inception of Dada-Zurich - at the intersection between literary and art studies, comparative studies, image-text theory and philosophy - the relationship between modernity and avant-garde as well as between avant-garde and Dadaism was redefined. This redefinition was a consequence of the scandalous aesthetic theoretical insights of Dada Zurich, which concretized in practical (...) and poetic form an aesthetic theory that in itself is aesthetic, and developed an aesthetic-theoretical understanding in which aisthesis takes up a central position. Dada uses the avant-garde as material. The aesthetic theoretical potential of Dada Zurich in turn had an impact not only on the artefacts that were actually used and aesthetically reflected by Dada, but on all modern - including avant-garde - artefacts. German description: Was bedeutet Dada? Die Antwort liegt in der Differenz von Wahrnehmbarem und Bezeichnung und deren scheiternder diskursiven Vermittlung. Mit der Konstitution des Gegenstandes Dada-Zurich - im Schnittfeld von Literatur- und Kunstwissenschaft, Komparatistik, Bild-Text-Theorie und Philosophie - wird das Verhaltnis von Moderne und Avantgarde sowie von Avantgarde und Dada neu bestimmt. Diese Neubestimmung resultiert aus der Erkenntnis der asthetisch-theoretischen Form Dada-Zurichs, deren Konstitution das theoretische Skandalon Asthetischer Theorie (als einer Theorie, die selber asthetisch wird) in praktischer und poietischer Form konkretisiert. Sie entwickelt eine asthetisch-theoretische Erkenntnisform, in der Aisthesis eine zentrale Stellung einnimmt. Dada nutzt die Avantgarde als Material. This article describes a logic of distinction and succession within the late-twentieth-century Leningrad-St. Petersburg cultural field, whereby consecutive intelligentsia mainstreams were replaced by their avant-garde peripheries. In this dynamic picture of socio-cultural transformations, I propose a working hypothesis of a repeated stratification of the field into an ‘official’, an ‘unofficial’, and a third ‘non-aligned’ intelligentsia. This hypothesis is tested in reference to the ‘non-aligned’ groups founded by the avant-garde artist and ideologue Timur Novikov (1958–2002). Three major shifts are described: from (...) the politicized late-Brezhnevite early 1980s to the apolitical radicalism of Novikov’s New Artists; from this anarchistic underground, through the perestroika era, to the playful ‘classicism’ of the New Academy of Fine Arts in the 1990s; and from this postmodern international orientation to an arch-reactionary, neo-imperial posturing at the turn of the 2000s. Lastly, this ‘non-aligned’ intelligentsia is suggested as a possible precedent, or, indeed, a model for understanding other historically significant avant-garde peripheries, which commonly seek to distinguish themselves from (often mutually-exclusive) centres. The First World War was the scenario that led to the invention and systematic use of military camouflage techniques. Between them, the two fundamental modes of static or pictorial camouflage: mimetic, known as Disruptive Pattern Material, and the naval, called Dazzle Painting. Avantgarde artists contributed to their birth. Immediately, there was the transfer of these techniques to the civilian sphere, revealing that its essentially practical essence did not prevent the exploitation of its aesthetic potential by contemporary visual culture. Throughout (...) the twentieth and twenty-first centuries the fields of art, architecture and design continue importing and exploiting the strategies of these two types of military camouflage. This article analyzes the artistic potential of static military camouflage devised during World War I and its impact on the setting of an expanded notion of camouflage. If the camouflage was in its origins and early history a form of disclosure of modern art on a global scale, the use of DPM and Dazzle by contemporary artists, is a form of dissemination of military camouflage to civil level. We explore a double investment produced by military camouflage: providing avantgarde art with a practical sense, and providing camouflage with an aesthetic sense. (shrink)

The 11 experimental, pseudo-avantgarde visual poems (wordless, other than title and date) are an indirect homage to the late-great filmmaker and photographer, Chris Marker (1921-2012), foremost to his penchant for utilizing disintegrating imagery in his film-essays and multimedia installations. All images were captured using a Research in Motion, BlackBerry 8520 cellphone, and subsequently 100-percent de-saturated, and 100-percent contrast-adjusted, using Microsoft Office Picture Manager. The images, as a result, resemble the primitive production values given to the pinhole camera, and the (...) “dogmatic” (uniform) adjustments (as above), applied to the original BB images, reference the early strictures applied to filmmaking by Lars von Trier. The above-mentioned, black-and-white adjustments notwithstanding, all images are used “as captured,” without cropping. The series begins and ends in Botwnnog, Northwest Wales, in May and August of 2013, respectively, with interregnums and brief idylls in Rijeka, Croatia, Trieste and Ancona, Italy, and Igoumenitsa, Ioannina, and Athens, Greece. Tracking the peregrinations of the author of the poems across Europe, and intimately associated with the then-nascent research and exhibition project, “Not-I/Thou: The Other Subject of Art & Architecture,”* the poems are also a compressed form of scholarship, albeit operating in the shadow-lands of knowledge per se, and evoking the non-discursive side of literary-artistic production, a penumbral zone within cultural production that nonetheless references the discursive arts (essay and/or full-blown treatise), but favors the paradox and/or tautology – privileging, then, the much-desired destruction of dialectics. The purpose of this article is to critically address a widespread assumption that reads like this: Works of art that make use of digital media automatically, through interactivity, are generally better suited for generating democratic processes in society than other art forms or phenomena that do not make use of digital media, and, therefore, digital art is more avant-garde than other art forms. By analysing the chains of equivalence underlying this assumption the article presents and discusses a number of issues (...) that, taken together, render this assumption fallacious. (shrink)

We now found nine new topologies, such as: NonStandard Topology, Largest Extended NonStandard Real Topology, Neutrosophic Triplet Weak/Strong Topologies, Neutrosophic Extended Triplet Weak/Strong Topologies, Neutrosophic Duplet Topology, Neutrosophic Extended Duplet Topology, Neutrosophic MultiSet Topology, and recall and improve the seven previously founded topologies in the years (2019-2023), namely: NonStandard Neutrosophic Topology, NeutroTopology, AntiTopology, Refined Neutrosophic Topology, Refined Neutrosophic Crisp Topology, SuperHyperTopology, and Neutrosophic SuperHyperTopology. They are called avantgarde topologies because of their innovative forms.

Salomón de la Selva (1893-1959) was a Nicaraguan writer/activist who authored many books of verse in Spanish, but only one in English: TropicalTown, And Other Poems (1918). Published in New York by John Lane–and regarded by Silvio Sirias as the first book of English verse published in the U.S.by a Latin American–Tropical Town exhibits a curious dynamic of avantgarde impulse: radically subversive in invoking counter-politics resisting U.S. colonial transnationalism, yet tending toward inherited, traditional aesthetic forms of poetry meant to (...) legitimize Selva’s Latin American identity with an impression of authority that contiguous Modernist experimental poetries could not. Through its sympathy for the U.S. immigrant’s nostalgia for homeland, coupled with express disapproval of U.S. international affairs, Tropical Town leaves a poetic record that challenges presuppositions about the integral relationships between ethos, aesthetics, and consciousness vis-à-vis assumed understandings of what constitutes radical poetry in the Modernist moment. Faced with the legacy of cubism, surrealism and the Czech avantgarde, Sudek sought his own approach, characterized by a striking mastery of light.

Der Artikel untersucht das Konzept des „Neuen Menschen“ am Beispiel der Ästhetik und Anthropologie des Bauhauses. Maßgeblich ist dafür das Verhältnis von Körper und Technik, wie es auf der Bauhausbühne für den Tanz insbesondere durch Oskar Schlemmer konzipiert, bildlich und tänzerisch dargestellt und in seinem Unterricht systematisch ausgebaut wurde. Die Idee von „Mensch und Kunstfigur“, die Relation von Mensch, Material, Umraum und Praxis wird modellhaft umgesetzt in Schlemmers „Triadischem Ballett“ und den „Bauhaustänzen“. Ausgehend von diesem Beispiel aus der Avantgarde (...) des 20. Jahrhunderts wird in dem Artikel gefragt, wie sich diese Idee des Menschen als „Gefüge“ von Körper, Technik, Umwelt im zeitgenössischen Tanz weiterentwickelt: am Beispiel von Choreographien von Gerhard Bohner („Im goldenen Schnitt“), Ola Maciejewska („Bombyx Mori“) und William Forsythe („Black Flags“). Proceeding from Lessing’s distinction between poetry and visual art, Boris Groys argues that language is not external to, but resides behind, the image. The image constitutes the scene of a frustrated linguistic desire. Modern visual art sought to avoid the obscenity of staging this unfulfilled desire by conducting a systematic ascetic repression of the linguistic impulse. This negation of linguistic desire culminated in Judd’s ‘specific ob jects’. Y et the modern image, Groys emphasizes with reference to Greenberg and McLuhan, still (...) transmits a message, namely that of its medium bearer. Modern artists torture the image and put it into a state of emergency or exception in which it confesses its interior. In the image’s sub-medium space, in turn, resides language. Avantgarde artists and modern media theorists share the wish to achieve durability by becoming the media of the media. The border between the image and language, Groys closes, can neither be stabilized nor abolished. (shrink)

In his Eighth Symphony Gustav Mahler envisions modern artistic production to steer clear of an alternative emerging at the time: that between popular music on the one hand and esoteric avantgarde music on the other; Mahler’s music is meant to reach the masses, but without descending to audiences’ lowest common denominator. One query through which Mahler’s paradoxical aesthetic vision of an ‘individualism for the masses’ can be explored has been hinted at by the composer himself: Does his integral symphonic (...) work of art (‘Gesamtkunstwerk’) include or rather exclude chamber music? X9B;Das Wahre, Schöne, Gute‹ bildet das Leitgestirn am kulturellen Himmel vom Ende des 18. bis über das Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts hinaus. Entstanden ist die Trias im frühen 18. Jahrhundert, initiiert durch die Rezeption der platonischen Philosophie, die Debatte um den guten Geschmack und die Erweiterung der Philosophie um die Wissenschaft der Ästhetik.0Während Kant und Schiller mit kritischem Bewusstsein den Zusammenhang und die Differenz des Wahren, Schönen und Guten erforschten, stand die Trias im 19. Jahrhundert als ubiquitäre Formel für das (...) ›Höhere‹, die bürgerliche Bildungs- und Kunstreligion. Ihre Verwendung in Goethes ›Epilog auf Schillers Glocke‹ weihte sie mit beider Namen. Daran entzündete sich eine ideologiekritische und ästhetische Polemik. Fontane sah in dieser Trias nur ein Umcouren des Geldes. Für die europäische Avantgarde seit Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts war sie Ausdruck einer banausischen Zweckentfremdung der Kunst. Der Fall der Trias begann. Ihre Anrufung war verpönt. Einher ging aber ihr stilles Fortbestehen, wie die Kunst- und Literaturkritik und die Debatten z. B. um Adornos Satz, wonach ein Gedicht nach Auschwitz zu schreiben, barbarisch sei, oder den 'Fall Esra' belegen. Es geht immer noch um die Frage, ob und wie in der Erfahrung der Kunst ästhetische mit moralischen und Wahrheitsansprüchen verbunden sind. (shrink)
