Philosophy of values and ethics in Ayn Rand’s axiological objectivism.Lukáš Arthur Švihura - 2024 - Ethics and Bioethics (in Central Europe) 14 (1-2):28-40.
The paper presents an analysis and interpretation of axiology and ethics as seen by the writer and philosopher Ayn Rand. The author follows the assumption that, in a situation where indifference is observed with regard to values (cf. Simmel, Sloterdijk), a return of philosophical reasoning to the idea of objectivity of values could be worthwhile. Therefore, he examines a specific type of axiological objectivism that can be found in Rand’s work. In the present paper, the suggested comparison with Baden neo-Kantism (...)

When Life is Art and Philosophy: The Case of Richard Shusterman.Lukáš Arthur Švihura - 2023 - Espes. The Slovak Journal of Aesthetics 12 (2):159-168.
This article is motivated by a reading of J.J. Abrams’ proceedings Shusterman’s Somaesthetics: From Hip Hop Philosophy to Politics and Performance Art. Of the diverse range of essays in the proceedings, I concentrate my attention primarily on those aspects of the texts that highlight Richard Shusterman’s practical somaesthetics, and in which their authors focus on the more personal aspects of Shusterman’s philosophical-artistic experimentation, as captured in The Adventures of the Man in Gold: Paths Between Art and Life, A Philosophical Tale. The world as will and representation.Arthur Schopenhauer & E. F. J. Payne - 1958 - [Indian Hills, Colo.]: Falcon's Wing Press. Edited by Judith Norman, Alistair Welchman & Christopher Janaway.
First published in 1818, The World as Will and Representation contains Schopenhauer's entire philosophy, ranging through epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of mind and action, aesthetics and philosophy of art, to ethics, the meaning of life and the philosophy of religion, in an attempt to account for the world in all its significant aspects. It gives a unique and influential account of what is and is not of value in existence, the striving and pain of the human condition and the possibility of (...)

Herbert Spencer.John Arthur Thomson - 1906 - New York: AMS Press.
This volume attempts to give a short account of Herbert Spencer's life, an appreciation of his characteristics, and a statement of some of the services he rendered to science. Prominence has been given to his Autobiography, to his Principles of Biology, and to his position as a cosmic evolutionist; but little has been said of his psychology and sociology, which require another volume, or of his ethics and politics, or of his agnosticism-the whetstone of so many critics. Our appreciation of (...)

After the End of Art: Contemporary Art and the Pale of History.Arthur Coleman Danto - 1997 - Princeton University Press.
Over a decade ago, Arthur Danto announced that art ended in the sixties. Ever since this declaration, he has been at the forefront of a radical critique of the nature of art in our time. After the End of Art presents Danto's first full-scale reformulation of his original insight, showing how, with the eclipse of abstract expressionism, art has deviated irrevocably from the narrative course that Vasari helped define for it in the Renaissance. Moreover, he leads the way to (...)

  42. Quantum mechanics in terms of realism.Arthur Jabs - 2017 - arXiv.Org.
We expound an alternative to the Copenhagen interpretation of the formalism of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. The basic difference is that the new interpretation is formulated in the language of epistemological realism. It involves a change in some basic physical concepts. The ψ function is no longer interpreted as a probability amplitude of the observed behaviour of elementary particles but as an objective physical field representing the particles themselves. The particles are thus extended objects whose extension varies in time according to (...)

Fundamental theory.Arthur Stanley Eddington & Edmund Taylor Whittaker - 1946 - Cambridge [Eng.]: The University Press. Edited by E. T. Whittaker.
Fundamental Theory has been called an "unfinished symphony" and "a challenge to the musicians among natural philosophers of the future". This book, written in 1944 but left unfinished because Eddington died too soon, proved to be his final effort at a vision for harmonization of quantum physics and relativity. The work is less connected and internally integrated than 'Protons and Electrons' while representing a later point in the author's thought arc. The really interested student should read both books together. The physical (...)

Personalization as a promise: Can Big Data change the practice of insurance?Arthur Charpentier & Laurence Barry - 2020 - Big Data and Society 7 (1).
The aim of this article is to assess the impact of Big Data technologies for insurance ratemaking, with a special focus on motor products. The first part shows how statistics and insurance mechanisms adopted the same aggregate viewpoint. It made visible regularities that were invisible at the individual level, further supporting the classificatory approach of insurance and the assumption that all members of a class are identical risks. The second part focuses on the reversal of perspective currently occurring in data analysis (...)

Laver Indestructibility and the Class of Compact Cardinals.Arthur W. Apter - 1998 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 63 (1):149-157.
Using an idea developed in joint work with Shelah, we show how to redefine Laver's notion of forcing making a supercompact cardinal $\kappa$ indestructible under $\kappa$-directed closed forcing to give a new proof of the Kimchi-Magidor Theorem in which every compact cardinal in the universe satisfies certain indestructibility properties. Specifically, we show that if K is the class of supercompact cardinals in the ground model, then it is possible to force and construct a generic extension in which the only strongly (...)
