Don't philosophers die just like all other men? In order to speak of the death of philosophers, why choose an author like Boureau-Deslandes, who collected anecdotes of insolence in the face of death? Undoubtedly, free minds could only disarm theology by joking about it. The mental, moral and playful mechanisms of the mind can be taken apart to reveal the bans inscribed in the conscience through the workings of institutions. Against the philosophies of melancholy, fear, death and power, (...) a philosophy of banter is a cheerful philosophy, an ethics of taste that destabilises the rules. Cette étude comporte une analyse détaillée de tous les travaux de l'auteur, en privilégiant ses textes inédits, erronément attribués, ignorés ou à peine recensés. Le but de cette étude est d'attirer l'attention sur une figure complexe d'écrivain et de penseur, dont l'œuvre devrait finalement trouver sa place dans la discipline de l'Histoire de la philosophie et mériterait d'être considérée dans (...) son intégralité, non seulement pour sa valeur intrinsèque, mais aussi parce qu'elle permet, par sa singularité, de mettre en évidence le clair-obscur d'un contexte philosophique, aussi bien culturel que moral : celui de la rencontre et de l'enchevêtrement de l'esprit libertin et l'esprit des Lumières dans la première moitié du XVIIIe siècle. Un empire - la domination exercee par la Bible et les autorites - fit naitre en retour le reve d'exercer un pouvoir par l'activite intellectuelle, fondee sur une maitrise du Livre et materialisee par les productions de textes. Ainsi s'etablit le savoir scolastique. Le present ouvrage propose une etude du sens et des moyens de l'activite de pensee lors d'un des beaux matins de l'Occident medieval. Pourquoi prelever sur la masse considerable des textes qui traitent de la confession clericale et des cas de conscience qu'elle a poses ce petit livre sans doute redige par un franciscain presque inconnu, vers 1265, sans aucune consideration doctrinale directe? C'est qu'il constitue, a sa modeste echelle, un document " exceptionnel et normal ", selon le fameux oxymore d'Edoardo Grendi, rendu celebre par Carlo Ginzburg : enracine en Toscane, entre Florence et Sienne, il offre environ 150 cas de la vie (...) quotidienne des citoyens et des marchands, poses dans un cadre plus ethique et social que strictement religieux. Sur le commerce, il apporte parfois des precisions inconnues par ailleurs, par exemple sur la culture et la vente du safran de San Gimignano, ou sur le negoce des chevaux en Toscane. Il offre un document de premier ordre sur la soccida, contrat d'elevage, espece du metayage, qui nait alors en Toscane avant de connaitre un long et capital developpement en Europe. Le Livre des cas est suivi d'un contrat de donation et d'une consultation, sans doute rediges par Chiaro, de Decisions curiales, auxquelles il a participe et de deux textes de son confrere et ami franciscain Manfredo de Tortona, un Traite sur les restitutions et un autre Sur la diversite des contrats, ainsi que par un extrait du franciscain Guiral Ot, Sur la necessite des marchands. Our aim is to analyze the position of the leader in relation to the ethical dimension of truth-telling within the organization under his/her control. Based on Michel Foucault’s study of truth-telling, we demonstrate that the role of the leader toward the corporation and the imperative of organizational performance place the leader in an ambiguous position: he/she is obliged to take the lead in “telling the truth” internally and externally, but also to bear the consequences of this “truth-telling” for the organization (...) and for himself/herself. In this process of construction and implementing the truth, the leader is organizer and figurehead of the corporation’s truth-telling practices: determining the frontiers between truth that can be said and that which should remain hidden, both inside and outside the corporation; establishing a dialogue based on truth ; guaranteeing that the rules of truth-telling are respected; and offering a truth which is compatible with the firm’s economic and ethical interest. Invested with the authority—the office—of managing truth within the corporation, the leader can be considered to be the “Chief Truth Officer.” From this perspective, we demonstrate that this role requires specific skills, like courage and practical wisdom. L'oeuvre d'Alain Boureau, multiple et dense, se deploie sur les quarante dernieres annees en abordant de nombreux domaines de l'histoire du Moyen Age et du christianisme latin. Elle suit les peregrinations personnelles et professionnelles d'un chercheur a travers un monde peuple de silhouettes incertaines : figures de l'hagiographie, faux-semblants de l'Etat moderne, anges, demons, cadavres et somnambules, vagues individus scolastiques qui eux-memes parlent de creatures etranges. Autant de fantomes d'un passe persistant qu'il a suivis avec tenacite tout au long (...) de sa carriere, et qui nous embarquent a leur tour a travers l'histoire. Ce volume entend garder la trace vivante des deux journees qui furent organisees a Paris en mai 2015 autour de l'oeuvre d'Alain Boureau. Ce Liber amicorum d'un genre un peu particulier, production scolastique en quelque sorte, donne a voir les membres d'un studium, ce qu'etait le seminaire d'Alain Boureau : les amis, les collegues, les proches, celles et ceux qui l'ont accompagne au cours de ses annees passees a l'EHESS. Les textes rassembles rendent compte de trajectoires et de realisations, ils en montrent les apports scientifiques et les enjeux intellectuels. Ils racontent, aussi. Ainsi se manifeste la richesse d'une oeuvre singuliere, construite aux croisements de differentes pratiques des sciences sociales dans une demarche souvent collective, toujours originale et novatrice. The analysis of narrative processes and metaphorical language are the topics generally focused on by business ethics researchers interested in the work of Paul Ricœur. Yet his work on political questions also applies to the ethical issues associated with organizations. Ricœur’s ethical enterprise can be expressed as a triad composed of teleological, deontological, and sapiential levels, associating ostensibly opposing positions of Aristotelian and Kantian origin. In this study, I examine politics, economics, and ethics in their dialectic relation as established by (...) Ricœur. Against a vertical, mechanistic, and axiologically neutral vision of management, he opposes the two conceptual pairs of conviction/imagination and ideology/utopia as well as a superior definition of justice associating reciprocal indebtedness and mutual disinterestedness. Through this analysis, it becomes clear that the vertical, hierarchical nature of politics tends to undermine the horizontal interactions necessary to procure just institutions in society. And any business ethic that does not acknowledge political tensions will be mute. What is needed instead is practical wisdom that is developed through interaction, and often through conflict, involving all the different players. (shrink)

‘Have you ever taken sufficient care of yourselves?’ By asking the elite Athenian youth this question, Socrates implies that the liberation of self and the capacity to govern are inseparable. Drawing on the lectures given by Michel Foucault at the Collège de France in 1984 – only recently made available to the public – we show the consequences of the return to this ancient care‐of‐self ethic in the organizational context. After reviewing the contributions made to business ethics by these two (...) philosophers, we propose four phases necessary to the emergence and constitution of a moral subject in organizations: self‐awakening, self‐evaluation, self‐transformation and self‐presentation. We then suggest various managerial practices and behaviour inspired by this philosophical parrhesia embodied by the Greek philosopher wherein the manager should have a personal relationship with his or her own activity. Finally, we discuss implications of our study in the field of business ethics and propose an agenda for future research. (shrink)

Corporate codes of ethics, which have spread in the last decades, have shown a limited ability to foster ethical behaviors. For instance, they have been criticized for relying too much on formal compliance, rather than taking into account sufficiently agents and their moral development, or promoting self-reflexive behaviors. We aim here at showing that a code of ethics in fact has meaning and enables ethical progress when it is interpreted and appropriated with practical wisdom. We explore a model that represents (...) an uncommon organizational code of ethics: the monastic Rule of St. Benedict, written in the sixth century and still used today. Our empirical study—conducted in several monasteries living under this rule—shows that organization members interpret this rule, both hermeneutically and ethically, to adapt it to situations. They also appropriate this rule as a way of life and treat it as a dynamic framework that helps them to follow their purpose within their organization. This exceptional code actually offers an alternative model for practicing codes of ethics, in a virtue-ethical manner, beyond mere compliance with the text. The way in which reflexive and active agents practice the code, both individually and collectively, shapes their organizational experience and fosters their moral development. (shrink)

The ‘right not to know’ can be used by patients as a safeguard against the effects that certain medical information can have on their well-being. At first glance, one might reason it suitable for a patient to enact their RNTK. However, although Davies states that RNTK gives people the ability to both protect themselves from self-perceived harm and exercise their autonomy, I will argue that ‘not knowing’ hinders patients’ ability to exercise their existential freedom and represents what Sartre calls an (...) instance of ‘bad faith’. Davies argues that the RNTK takes precedence over many related issues and objections associated with a patient’s decision to implement such a resolution.1 Fundamentally, the RNTK gives patients power to protect themselves from subjective harm and to exercise their autonomy. In most cases, objectors of RNTK cite the negative impact on the patient’s state of health, which affects not only the patient but also those persons who would also be negatively affected by patient health outcomes. For the majority of objectors, patients have moral obligations to lessen the degree of burden on others, which refusal can initiate. Cet article cherche à dégager les enjeux de la cosmologie dans le système naturel aristotélicien. On commencera par relever certains paradoxes, comme l’absence de la cosmologie dans le programme scientifique d’Aristote. L’objet du De Caelo sera examiné dans cette perspective. On exposera dans un second temps les difficultés méthodologiques d’une enquête portant sur la nature du tout à la lumière de l’épistémologie aristotélicienne. L’étude de la démarche du Stagirite permettra ainsi de distinguer deux conceptions du monde : le monde comme (...) totalité statique des corps ( pan ou holon ) et le monde comme principe de leur organisation dynamique ( cosmos ). La cosmologie aristotélicienne se confondra dès lors avec l’étude de la structure formelle du mouvement éternel, s’intégrant ainsi dans une étude générale du mouvement. (shrink)

On examine ici la résolution théologienne, au Moyen Âge central, de demeurer une science qui ne soit pas la transcription des anxiétés à la fois universelles et contextuelles qui ont envahi l’Europe de la fin du Moyen Âge. La démonologie, à la fin du xiii e siècle, est devenue un secteur autonome de la théologie, illustré par les trois traités sur les démons rédigés entre 1270 et 1300, constitués par un assemblage de questions disputées par Thomas d’Aquin, Pierre de Jean (...) Olivi et Richard de Mediavilla. Paradoxalement, ce sont des considérations anthropologiques neuves qui ont frayé un chemin à la réflexion sur le démon (exemples de la tentation suicidaire et de l’oubli). Enfin, la démonologie se constitua en cadre rationnel pour penser la causalité (exemple du pacte sacramentel) et l’antagonisme des actions surnaturelles, tout en promouvant une théologie du risque. This paper focuses on the relation between version α of the seventh book of Aristotle’s Physics and the two byzantine families which shape the transmission lineage of most Aristotelian texts. To this end, it establishes a stemma codicum of all known manuscripts of version α. The first step reexamines Simplicius’ testimony in order to overcome the stemmatic problem arising from it: Simplicius’ statement that there was a version β for chapters 4 and 5 seems to be mere speculation on his (...) part. This allows for the more plausible assumption that only the first three chapters of book VII were transmitted in two versions. The paper then deals with the witnesses of version α, which either transmit version α as a whole or a mixture of the two versions. H and I are shown to stem from the same manuscript ι. ι was used by E2, who famously annotated Paris. 1853 and copied in its margins scholia derived from Philoponus’ commentary as well as κεφάλαια of book VII, both of which also feature in manuscripts close to H and I. Though ι is the source of both a version α and a version β, the original version of manuscript ι was βι. Therefore, version α cannot be associated with certainty to either of the two byzantine families of Aristotle’s natural works. Although version α may come from a now extinct third family, there is no trace of such a family in either Paris. 1859 or Vind. 64, which both got the text of book VII from the same manuscript φ. In any case, the evidence points to all direct witnesses of version α coming from only two sources: ι and φ. (shrink)

Book III of Aristotle’s De caelo does not feature the Platonic concept of χώρα as a main protagonist. Through mere scarce allusions, Aristotle tends to treat it as just another concept of matter, reminiscent in many respects of those of Presocratic philosophers. In this paper, I argue that this biased presentation should be interpreted as Aristotle’s implicit refusal to acknowledge the role of the χώρα in Plato’s reform of participation, which is expounded in the Timaeus. I refer this refusal to (...) Aristotle’s complex epistemological and methodological criticisms of Platonic paradigmatism. Reconstructing this implicit dialogue between Plato and Aristotle also sheds a new light on the stakes and consistency of book III of De caelo, which had remained elusive in earlier approaches. I suggest that book III does not aim to propose a consistent account of the four elements or of generation, but to build a new Aristotelian framework as an answer to the aporiai of Plato’s Timaeus. In showing how the bureaucratic space negatively influences the moral conscience of managers, Robert Jackall’s sociological writings have pointed up one of the darkest sides of organizations. In fact, in the business ethics literature there is much to support Jackall’s pessimistic contentions, suggesting that bureaucracy can rob individual managers of their sense of responsibility. How then can this space for individual freedom, so essential in re-establishing responsible management, be recreated? In order to answer this question, we propose to interpret Jackall’s (...) Moral Mazes ( 1988 ) from the standpoint of Blaise Pascal’s Jansenist ethics and conception of humankind. Our discussion here of Pascal’s “reason of effects,” his theory of “double thought” and his distinction between respect and esteem takes Jackall’s analysis forward and opens new lines of thought about managerial responsibility. The article concludes with some thoughts on further research in the field of business ethics arising from Pascalian anthropology or what we call here “skeptical humanism.”. (shrink)

Souffrance et joie sont les faits indubitables de l’expérience du travail. Nous souhaitons ici interroger philosophiquement, dans cette expérience contemporaine du travail collaboratif, le rôle spécifique du management. En premier lieu, et en trois temps, le texte approfondit les relations complexes que ces notions entretiennent entre elles : travail et management, management et joie, joie et travail. Ensuite, il présente une analyse critique du travail à partir de l’analyse qu’en propose Michel Henry, et montre qu’en management c’est d’abord l’être même (...) du travail qui est nié. Pour Henry en effet, toute collaboration est ce qui permet à chacun d’éprouver l’expérience d’un même vivre, d’offrir aux vivants que nous sommes la possibilité d’une réalisation affective. C’est lorsqu’elle se produit dans l’univers des organisations, que la joie au travail peut alors surgir. En conclusion, quelques chantiers d’actualisation de l’enseignement et de la pratique du management sont suggérés. (shrink)

The influence of Jules Lequier on the development of continental philosophy is currently being revived. Ghislain Deslandes introduces Lequier's thought while highlighting its influence in the development, throughout the twentieth century, including in process thought, pragmatism, existentialism, and phenomenology.

Je propose ici une hypothèse radicale, mais fragile: le commentaire sur l’Apocalypse désigné par son incipit Vox Domini, qui a été édité1 dans les Opera omnia de Thomas d’Aquin, avant d’être rejeté du corpus authentique, serait l’œuvre de Bonaventure. Je ne peux présenter aucune preuve absolue, mais un ensemble de probabilités ou de convergences. L’enjeu est de taille pour trois raisons: cette œuvre longue (environ 200.000 mots) a forcément occupé longuement Bonaventure et l’histoire de sa carrière doit être revue. Ensuite, (...) le commentaire permet d’avoir une vue plus claire des rapports de Bonaventure avec l’eschatologie de son temps. Enfin, l’indifférence sidérante des historiens aux contenus de Vox .. On étudiera d'abord l'entrée du droit dans l'exégèse, avec Hugues de Saint-Cher, puis le cas, privilégié, du serment et du mensonge, ici analysé dans l'oeuvre de Pierre de Jean Olivi (ca 1280). On verra émerger les notions d'engagement et d'obligation - envers le prochain et envers Dieu. L'obligation est réalisée par la prononciation de paroles, qui prime sur tout autre circonstance de l'acte. English summary: Abdication may be the renouncement of power, but it is also an ultimate act of personal power, one that can only be made by an individual imposing his own choice to abandon the body politic. This collection of articles follows up on Jacques Le Bruns 2009 study of abdication, with analyses of abdications by Christine of Sweden, Celestine V, Charles de Gaulle, as well as abdication as treated in the films Habemus Papam and King Lear. French description: Au (...) debut de 2013, deux abdications souveraines se sont produites: celle de Beatrix, reine des Pays-Bas, annoncee le 28 janvier et celle du pape Benoit XVI, proclamee le 11 fevrier. L'actualite prenait en echarpe les huit siecles que nous parcourons ici. L'abdication, ce renoncement au pouvoir, constitue l'etat pur d'un acte de volonte dans la sphere politique ou religieuse. Une instance souveraine, qui ne depend de rien d'autre que de soi-meme, decide de s'abolir. L'abdication apparait alors non comme le simple abandon du pouvoir, mais comme un acte de pouvoir - celui de l'individu imposant son choix, se repliant sur son corps et abandonnant le corps politique - ou, du moins, comme une autre facon de le manipuler et de s'en saisir. Ce livre entend donner un echo et un prolongement au texte fondateur et magistral de Jacques Le Brun, Le Pouvoir d'abdiquer. Essai sur la decheance volontaire, paru en 2009. Notre entreprise a etendu ces variations aux cas mentionnes par Jacques Le Brun sans qu'il en traite, soit dans l'arc temporel premier, pour l'abdication de Christine de Suede, soit dans les temps anterieurs pour la renonciation du pape Celestin V, placee dans la perspective globale du XIIIe siecle, ou posterieurs, quant aux departs de De Gaulle. Pierre-Antoine Fabre, pour sa part, a ajoute au dossier le cas doctrinal de l'abdication du superieur jesuite en faveur de son collateral dans les Constitutions de l'ordre. English summary: This book, the fourth volume of the Raison scolastique, attempts to historicize the concept of moral judgement. Thirteenth century medieval and Scholastic thought, in search of a specific set of ethics, attempted to distance themselves from previously held taboos. They therefore moved towards a defined set of standards that revolved around the moral and legal notion of responsibility, which remains to the present day. French description: Ce livre, qui constitue le tome IV de la Raison scolastique, tente d'historiciser (...) la notion de jugement moral. La pensee medievale et scolastique du XIIIe siecle, en quete d'une ethique specifique et immanente, s'est emancipee de lourds tabous et a travaille a la delegation affectee a l'homme pour la production de normes morales. Ainsi, elle a pu associer au reve d'une symphonie des actes, autour de Thomas d'Aquin, les chants de l'individu (Chiaro de Florence, Olivi, Astesano ou Ockham). L'ethique de cette periode tourne autour de la notion juridicomorale de responsabilite, qui demeure jusqu'a nos jours, et sans vraie resolution, une ligne de faite de la vie ethique. Si le mot n'a pas ete cree au Moyen Age, la notion, sous le nom d'imputation et d'imputabilite, fut tres fermement discutee. La situation de discussion restait ouverte, tant que cette notion n'etait pas inscrite dans des codes. C'est une orchestration coherente de l'ethique qui a subi le silence du formalisme scotiste, malgre un ulterieur intermede jesuite. Cette situation suscite des echos dans le monde contemporain occidental ou le long cycle des jugements formels, conduisant a l'imperatif categorique (le Sollen) de Kant, fut suivi d'une reaction intense: l'ethique avait a juger singulierement les actes humains. A ce mouvement, il faut associer la periode 1860-1960 (Renouvier, Nietzsche, Freud, Arendt), a laquelle succede un nouveau formalisme. Certes, le droit est revenu absorber la morale, notamment avec une nouvelle pregnance de la responsabilite, qui reduit les conduites humaines au risque de faute. This text presents and addresses the philosophical movement of antiphilosophy working thru the texts of Christian thinkers such as Pascal and Kierkegaard. The author as influenced by Alain Badiou, portrays these Christian thinkers as of a subjective dimension negating the possibility of an objective quest for truth. The claim here is that antiphilosophy is abundant in the eyes of these two thinkers who frame the thought event as represented by Christianity, ultimately resigning itself to more or less the opposite of (...) philosophy itself. Readers will discover why philosophical reason should never be convinced by that which denies its very authority. Subjecting faith to the perils of philosophical analysis, confronting the philosophical tradition with the truth of the Christian faith, and occupying the space between the two: such are the challenges facing an antiphilosophy of Christianity. This text will appeal to researchers and students working in continental philosophy, philosophy of religion and those in religious studies who want to investigate the links between Christianity and antiphilosophy. By deliberately placing ethics under the category of communication, Kierkegaard intended to show that it is like no other science. He distinguished betweendirect communication and indirect communication. Direct communication concerns objectivity and knowledge; indirect communication, on the other hand, has to do with subjectivity (“becoming-subject”). In this paper, the author presents Kierkegaard’s philosophy of communication and ethics with special emphasis on his irony and pseudonymous authorship. He also examines the possibility of a discourse in business ethics, focusing on the educational (...) perspective. He discusses Kierkegaard’s aspects of communication—the communicator, the receiver, and the object—with particular reference to applied ethics. He argues that the Kierkegaardian notion of indirect communication can contribute to renewing business ethics teaching—which in his view is more art than science—in two important ways: (1) when the ethics teacher changes his position in the teacher/learner relationship; and (2) when the relationship between communicator/receiver is strengthened at the expense of the object. The philosopher Henri Bergson embraced the totality of life as a creative evolution which transcends the fullness of a preconceived idea. While Mintzberg attempts to rethink the concept of strategy and Bergson to renew philosophical thought, together they share a vision of a changing and unpredictable world that enables them to discover — above and (...) beyond the systematic data they are able to assemble — another mode of knowledge formed by intuition. Intuition holds a central place in the work of both thinkers, invigorating Mintzberg’s work on strategy and Bergson’s thought on metaphysics through a grasp of the substantiality of change. In this paper, we explore the implications of the concept of intuition for their ideas, then discuss some of its limitations, before investigating its possible applications for management research. This book is the first of its kind to offer a new definition of contemporary management. It uses Michel Henry’s philosophy and takes the real, sensitive and pathetic subjectivity of individuals as the starting point of the analysis as opposed to the usual large categories of representations; resources; images; and discourses. This book thus proposes to rethink management by insisting on the dialectic of strength and vulnerability; its power of constraint, imitation and imagination; and finally its framework of action situated (...) in a fourfold concern for the self, for people, for institutions and for the environment. These different notions are useful in order to experience a deeper understanding of management that is free from the obsolescence of the distant recommendations of ancient protomanagement and the outdated and dubious prescriptions of the so-called “scientific management”. Faced with the disenchantment and disengagement expressed by their employees, business leaders are considering ways of incorporating more benevolence into managerial practices. Nevertheless, ‘benevolence’—care and concern for the well-being of others—has not yet been studied in an organizational profit-focused context. In this paper, we seek to investigate the emergence and practice of benevolence with an eye on profit and performance. We begin by investigating the main ethical approaches to benevolence—virtue ethical, utilitarian, and deontological. Then, based on an empirical study, we (...) identify two distinct types of benevolence. On the one hand, formal benevolence is defined and monitored by the organizational processes and actions of leaders; it is understood by all concerned to be bounded by organizational performance. On the other hand, informal benevolence exists at the margin of these processes, in interpersonal and discretionary relationships. We set out to analyze these two types of benevolence and the complementarity between them. We also discuss to what extent they can be managed, teasing out some implications for managers and some potential avenues for further research. (shrink)
