Why a group-level analysis is essential for effective public policy: The case for a g-frame.William J. Bingley, S. Alexander Haslam, Catherine Haslam, Matthew J. Hornsey & Frank Mols - 2023 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 46:e148.
Societal problems are not solved by individualistic interventions, but nor are systemic approaches optimal given their neglect of the social psychology underpinning group dynamics. This impasse can be addressed through a group-level analysis (a “g-frame”) that social identity theorizing affords. Using a g-frame can make policy interventions more adaptive, inclusive, and engaging.

Oxidative stress management in the hair follicle: Could targeting NRF2 counter age-related hair disorders and beyond?Laura Jadkauskaite, Pierre A. Coulombe, Matthias Schäfer, Albena T. Dinkova-Kostova, Ralf Paus & Iain S. Haslam - 2017 - Bioessays 39 (8):1700029.
Widespread expression of the transcription factor, nuclear factor (erythroid‐derived 2)‐like 2 (NRF2), which maintains redox homeostasis, has recently been identified in the hair follicle (HF). Small molecule activators of NRF2 may therefore be useful in the management of HF pathologies associated with redox imbalance, ranging from HF greying and HF ageing via androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata to chemotherapy‐induced hair loss. Indeed, NRF2 activation has been shown to prevent peroxide‐induced hair growth inhibition. Multiple parameters can increase the levels of reactive (...)

The Hair Follicle as an Interdisciplinary Model for Biomedical Research: An Eclectic Literature Synthesis.Iain S. Haslam & Ralf Paus - 2020 - Bioessays 42 (11):2000053.
Skin is a comparatively accessible organ possessing many conserved regulatory and signaling pathways, drawing researchers from varied fields toward its study. Hair follicle (HF) biology in particular has expanded rapidly over the preceding decade, helping to shape and develop scientific knowledge across diverse areas of biomedical research, beyond the skin. The hope in compiling this review is to inspire more researchers to utilize the HF as an instructive biological model, bringing with them fresh perspectives and experience from differing fields of (...)

Group? What group? A computational model of the group needs a psychology of “us”.Janet Wiles, S. Alexander Haslam, Niklas K. Steffens & Jolanda Jetten - 2022 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 45.
Groups are only real, and only serve as a basis for collective action, when their members perceive them to be real. For a computational model to have analytic fidelity and predictive validity it, therefore, needs to engage with the psychological reality of groups, their internal structure, and their structuring by the social context in which they function.

  9. The Collected Papers of Bertrand Russell, Volume 15: Uncertain Paths to Freedom: Russia and China 1919-1922.Beryl Haslam & Richard A. Rempel (eds.) - 2000 - Routledge.
The Collected Papers of Bertrand Russell, Volume 15 assembles Russell's writings on his experiences of visiting and reflecting on Russia and China. Having emerged from the Great War determined to prevent another armed conflict, Russell became a champion of international socialism as the antidote to the destructive forces of nationalism and capitalism. His quest for international reconstruction led to two enduring experiences, his trip first to Bolshevik Russia in 1920 and then to divided China in 1920-21. These letters describe those (...)

During the First World War, Bertrand Russell was political commentator for _The Tribunal_, the official weekly publication of the No-Conscription Fellowship, of which Russell was Action Chairman. This volume contains many short papers from that period, which reflect Russell's immediate reponses to developments in the conflict. These documents bear witness to Russell's growing commitment to pacifism, and reveal the development of the patterns of political argument, rhetoric and activism which were to characterise his work throughout his life.

Construction at Work: Multiple Identities Scaffold Professional Identity Development in Academia.Sarah V. Bentley, Kim Peters, S. Alexander Haslam & Katharine H. Greenaway - 2019 - Frontiers in Psychology 10:430340.
Identity construction — the process of creating and building a new future self — is an integral part of a person’s professional career development. However, at present we have little understanding of the psychological mechanisms that underpin this process. Likewise, we have little understanding of the barriers that obstruct it, and which thus may contribute to inequality in career outcomes. Using a social identity lens, and particularly the Social Identity Model of Identity Change (SIMIC), we explore the process of academic (...)

Experiments make a good breakfast, but a poor supper.Jolanda Jetten, Hema Preya Selvanathan, Charlie R. Crimston, Sarah V. Bentley & S. Alexander Haslam - 2022 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 45.
Cesario's analysis has three key flaws. First, the focus on whether an effect is “real” overlooks the importance of theory testing. Second, obsession with effects sidelines theoretically informed questions about when and why an effect may arise. Third, failure to take stock of cultural and historical context strips findings of meaning.

COVID-19 vaccines: history of the pandemic’s great scientific success and flawed policy implementation.Vinay Prasad & Alyson Haslam - forthcoming - Monash Bioethics Review.
The COVID-19 vaccine has been a miraculous, life-saving advance, offering staggering efficacy in adults, and was developed with astonishing speed. The time from sequencing the virus to authorizing the first COVID-19 vaccine was so brisk even the optimists appear close-minded. Yet, simultaneously, United States’ COVID-19 vaccination roll-out and related policies have contained missed opportunities, errors, run counter to evidence-based medicine, and revealed limitations in the judgment of public policymakers. Misplaced utilization, contradictory messaging, and poor deployment in those who would benefit (...)

    Samuel R. Delany, Lou Reed, and Utopia's Queer End.Jason Haslam - 2017 - Utopian Studies 28 (2):247-267.
This article is driven by death. Thematically, death serves as a figure in the central creative works I discuss: Samuel R. Delany's sword-and-sorcery novella The Tale of Plagues and Carnivals, one of the first novels to deal directly with the AIDS pandemic,1 and Lou Reed's songs, especially the proto-punk "Heroin" and the queer soul song "Coney Island Baby." Meanwhile, the argument's methodology also concerns death. As many theorists and critics have discussed,2 the field of queer studies has seen, for at (...)

Beyond balance: To understand “bias,” social psychology needs to address issues of politics, power, and social perspective.Alexander Haslam, Tom Postmes & Jolanda Jetten - 2004 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 27 (3):341-342.
Krueger & Funder's (K&F's) diagnosis of social psychology's obsession with bias is correct and accords with similar observations by self-categorization theorists. However, the analysis of causes is incomplete and suggestions for cures are flawed. The primary problem is not imbalance, but a failure to acknowledge that social reality has different forms, depending on one's social and political vantage point in relation to a specific social context.

Reading, Trauma and Literary Caregiving 1914-1918: Helen Mary Gaskell and the War Library.Sara Haslam - 2020 - Journal of Medical Humanities 41 (3):305-321.
This article is about the relationship between reading, trauma and responsive literary caregiving in Britain during the First World War. Its analysis of two little-known documents describing the history of the War Library, begun by Helen Mary Gaskell in 1914, exposes a gap in the scholarship of war-time reading; generates a new narrative of "how," "when," and "why" books went to war; and foregrounds gender in its analysis of the historiography. The Library of Congress's T. W. Koch discovered Gaskell's ground-breaking (...)
