This paper examines the anti-psychologism of Paul Natorp, a Marburg School Neo-Kantian. It identifies both Natorp’s principle argument against psychologism and the views underlying the argument that give it its force. Natorp’s argument depends for its success on his view that certain scientific laws constitute the intersubjective content of knowledge. That view in turn depends on Natorp’s conception of subjectivity, so it is only against the background of his conception of subjectivity that his reasons for rejecting psychologism make sense. (...) The aim of this paper is to exhibit the core of Paul Natorp's criticisms of psychologism. We expose the arguments that lead Natorp to conclude that knowledge cannot have a subjective foundation but must have an objective grounding. We argue that, according to Natorp, the problem of psychologism is fundamentally methodological. Psychologism confuses the study of the laws of knowledge with the study of the legality of psychical life. Thus, the problem of the genesis is confused with the problem (...) of validity. (shrink)

In seinem Beitrag „Paul Natorp über das Verhältnis von Philosophie und Psychologie“ stellt Henning Peucker im Ausgang von Hegel und in seiner Gegenüberstellung zu Kant erst einmal die unterschiedlichen Aufgaben von Philosophie und Wissenschaft heraus. Denn während die Wissenschaften um Objektivierung, immer exaktere Gegenstandsbestimmungen bemüht sind, fällt der Philosophie die Aufgabe zu, nach den Möglichkeiten solcher Erkenntnisse zu fragen und diese zu sichern. Von dieser Unterscheidung aus wendet sich Peucker der Bestimmung des Verhältnisses von Philosophie und Psychologie zu. Gleichsam (...) stellt er die Frage nach dem der Psychologie eigentümlichen Charakter und ihrem Gegenstand. Dieser Charakter gründet sich darauf, dass sich das Subjekt nach Natorp nicht wie andere Gegenstände objektivieren lässt. Was aber, so fragt Peucker, kann dann als Gegenstand der Psychologie gelten. Um dieser Frage nachzugehen, weist Peucker auf die drei Momente hin, welche das „Faktum des bewussten Erlebens“ ausmachen, nämlich das erlebende Subjekt, der erlebte Gegenstand und das Verhältnis beider zueinander. Dabei stellt Peucker heraus, dass allein der Inhalt für eine psychologische Untersuchung geeignet ist. Anders allerdings als in den Wissenschaften geht es in der Psychologie nicht um Objektivierung desselben, sondern um eine in entgegengesetzter Richtung ablaufende Subjektivierung, verstanden als Rekonstruktion der kategorialen Voraussetzungen einer jeweiligen Objektivierung. Cette etude, la premiere en France sur la philosophie de Natorp (1854-1924), met en evidence sa specificite et son evolution. Sa specificite: Natorp est le seul des neokantiens de l'ecole de Marbourg a batir, au sein de la theorie de la connaissance, une psychologie dont la version definitive, intitulee Psychologie generale, parait en 1912. Il s'agit d'en etablir la configuration, de montrer comment elle se situe relativement a la psychologie scientifique en plein essor et de mettre en evidence l'importance qu'elle (...) a eue dans la constitution de la phenomenologie. La psychologie critique de Natorp est d'abord une methodologie qui s'interroge sur les conditions d'une connaissance scientifique des processus cognitifs. Elle est ensuite une methode, la methode de reconstruction du subjectif a partir de ses objectivations, qui s'oppose a la reduction husserlienne pretendant s'appuyer sur une donation et retrouver une immediatete subjective pourtant definitivement perdue. Son evolution: Natorp se detourne en effet apres la premiere guerre mondiale de la philosophie marbourgeoise, parce que celle-ci construit sa theorie de la connaissance sur des presupposes ininterroges et reduit le donne a la pensee du donne. Il en vient a considerer, avec ses derniers textes et dans une perspective qui influencera Heidegger, que la question fondamentale est celle de l'etre. C'est pourquoi il construit une ontologie ou logique de l'etre qui tente de penser l'alterite dans son immanence au logos. (shrink)

Veröffentlicht werden Studien, die einen innovativen Charakter haben und ausdrückliche Desiderate der Forschung erfüllen. Die Publikationen repräsentieren damit den aktuellsten Stand der Forschung.

This article seeks to provide a fuller account of the philosophy of religion of the Marburg Neo-Kantian, Paul Natorp (1854–1924), than has hitherto been available. It does so by describing important changes in Natorp’s thinking about religion between the publication of his early book, Religion innerhalb der Grenzen der Humanität (1894), and later writings in which he espouses a version of logos-mysticism strikingly at odds with the concept of a “religion of reason” put forward by his long-time Marburg colleague, (...) Hermann Cohen (1842–1918). These differences are analyzed in relation to these two thinkers’ divergent views on philosophical systematics, and their respective experiences of the First World War.
