Mit dem vorliegenden Band wird Manfred Riedel, ein Schuler von Ernst Bloch, Karl Lowith und Hans-Georg Gadamer geehrt. Er anerkennt zugleich ein philosophisches Lebenswerk, das sich nicht an ferne utopische Ziele verlor, sondern mit dem historischen Leidensweg des geteilten und seit 1990 geeinten Deutschland untrennbar verbunden ist. Widergespiegelt wird das breite Spektrum seines philosophischen Denkens, das von der Lehre einer zweiten, praktischen Philosophie uber die Geschichtsvisionen einer Burgergesellschaft in Antike und Neuzeit zu der Gewichtung einer akroamatischen - das Horen auf (...) die Sprache erorternden - Hermeneutik und dem Zusammenhang von Denken und Dichten bei Nietzsche und den grossen Lyrikern der klassischen Moderne reicht. Evolutionary developmental biology (or developmental evolution) is in the middle stages of its “development.” Its early ontogeny cannot be traced back to fertilization but pivotal developmental events included Gould’s (1977) treatment of heterochrony, Riedl’s (1978) analysis of “burden”, the Dahlem conference of 1981, a British Society of Developmental Biologists Symposium, as well as books that incorporated developmental genetics into older comparative themes. A major inductive process began with the discovery of widespread phylogenetic conservation in homeobox-containing genes. One interpretation of (...) these early developmental dynamics holds that an increasingly prominent problem agenda (e.g., how do novel structures and functions originate?), inherited from long-standing research programs in comparative embryology, morphology, and paleontology, was handed a powerful set of experimental tools from the lineage of experimental embryology. This allowed for an experimental probing of development and its evolution in an unprecedented fashion. Although the relationship between evolution and development has exhibited a protracted and complex history, we are still in the process of comprehending these early stages of “modern” EvoDevo’s ontogeny. Summary In the first part of this contribution, the three probably most influential conceptions of evolutionary epistemology are surveyed, as they were put forward by Konrad Lorenz, Gerhard Vollmer, and Rupert Riedl, respectively. It is demonstrated that, as far as the essentials are concerned, these conceptions largely correspond with each other as well as with a further conception advanced by Karl Popper from the point of view of Critical Rationalism. It can be clearly shown, moreover, that fundamentals of the (...) latter conception can be traced back to Popper's earliest publications (e. g., to hisLogik der Forschung [The Logic of Scientific Discovery]). By means of an examination of the language used by these authors, it is tried to elucidate the fact that, for the reasons of lacking consideration of the lingual/non-lingual distinction and of faults and inadequacies in consequence of this lack alone, the proposed conceptions can be rejected as being at least highly defective. Morphological EvoDevo is a field of biological inquiry in which explicit relations between evolutionary patterns and growth or morphogenetic processes are made. Historically, morphological EvoDevo results from the coming together of several traditions, notably Naturphilosophie, embryology, the study of heterochrony, and developmental constraints. A special feature binding different approaches to morphological EvoDevo is the use of formalisms and mathematical models. Here we will introduce anatomical network analysis, a new approach centered on connectivity patterns formed by anatomical parts, with its own (...) concepts and tools specifically designed for the study of morphological EvoDevo questions. Riedl’s concept of burden is tightly related to the use of anatomical networks, providing a nexus between the evolutionary patterns and the structural constraints that shape them. (shrink)

Eric Voegelin (1901-1985) zahlt zu den prominentesten Vertretern einer neoklassischen politischen Philosophie im 20. Jahrhundert. Wesentliche Grundlagen seiner politischen Theorie entwickelt Voegelin in der Auseinandersetzung mit der staatstheoretischen Debatte der 1920er- und 1930er-Jahre und im Versuch der Grundlegung einer "Staatslehre als Geisteswissenschaft". Which is more important, tragedy or treatise? This question, which was posed as early as in antiquity, cannot easily be answered since tragedy has reflective passages on existential issues, just as philosophy uses tragedy for argumentation or takes the dramatic form itself. This is particularly evident in the work of the ‘philosophus scaenicus’ Euripides, in Plato, whose understanding of tragedy as expressed in the Symposium and the Laws is discussed here, and with Cicero and Seneca, who were both authors of (...) treatises and verses of tragedy. They constitute the focus of this volume, which also examines the function of the poetry quotations in Chrysippus and finally the significance of tragedy for Hannah Arendt’s political analysis. The paper deals with the concept of the identity of living organisms, a concept used up until now very ambiguously. The discussion rests on the combination of two concepts, one proposed by Munzer (1993) and another derived from the considerations of Riedl (1975). The first is the proposal that the identity of living organisms depends on the properties of their elementary constituents, such as cells and tissues, and that these properties, in turn, depend on those of their DNA and (...) RNA. It follows that the identity of a living organism remains constant or changes during life according to whether its DNA and RNA content also remains constant or changes. The second is the consideration that, during duplication of a cell population, the informational content of the population does not increase if the duplicated cells are identical (increase only of redundant DNA). On the other hand the informational content of the cell population increases if the duplicated cells are the result of a variation-selection process (increase of essential DNA). The changes of DNA and RNA content, occurring in the germinal cells during phylogenesis and in the somatic cells of the evolutionary systems during ontogenesis, lead, therefore, to the generation of new identities. Living organisms are suggested to reflect two types of identity, that of the deterministic and that of the evolutionary systems. Since the informational content of the deterministic systems (the essential DNA content) remains approximately constant during life, their identity also remains constant. The changes in the number of elementary constituents and cell volumes during the processes of hypertrophy and atrophy are accompanied only by changes in the amount of DNA (the redundant DNA). On the other hand the informational content of the evolutionary systems (the essential DNA), such as the brain-mind system, the immunological system and some receptor systems, undergo a marked increase during the ontogenic development: this leads to changes of identity of these systems. For example, in the immunological system the process of mutation and recombination of the DNA of the immunological cells leads to the generation of new proteins in the amount about 10,000 times larger than that produced through the decodification of the genome. Also the construction of the neural network, and of a number of synapses much larger than that of the neuronal cells, requires the generation of an amount of new information much larger than that contained in the genome. In short, the attribution of a double identity to living organisms reflects the simultaneous presence of systems developing either within strictly programmed limits or without programs and limits, say as closed or open projects. The difference between the two types of systems explains the different effects in the case of the transplants. The identity of the recipient of transplants is not altered in the case of transplants of a deterministic system but is so in case of transplants of evolutionary systems. There is now a widespread fear of the possibility of human cloning. It is argued that this fear is unjustified because a cloning process can never succeed in duplicating those parts which are essential for the characters of humans, namely those concerned with the properties of the evolutionary systems. In this, the 1965 Aquinas Lecture, Dr. Riedl examines the future of universities in the light of three basic discrepancies between their historical functions and present roles: loss of their status as sole agency for the advancement of learning, loss of their function as educator of clerics, and loss of their role as sole arbiters of professional education and standards. He concludes that we need a theory of administration that allows decentralization of control without compartmentalization, a theory of creativity (...) in research and teaching, and a theory of colleagueship that does justice to the realities of institutional and professional loyalties.—R.
