La fin du xixe siècle est une période difficile pour les Français. La défaite de 1871, la chute du régime impérial, les déboires de la Troisième République et le krach de 1882 les ont amenés à douter de la capacité de leurs gouvernants. La société se fragilise et se divise, favorisant la montée du boulangisme et de l’antisémitisme. Charles Maurras et l’Action française en profitent également, après le suicide du général Boulanger en 1891 et la condamnation du capitaine (...) Dreyfus en 1894. Comtien convaincu, Maurras prend régulièrement position contre Rousseau, dans lequel il voit le principal responsable de la décadence morale et politique de la France. S’ouvre alors une campagne d’une rare violence contre les valeurs morales et esthétiques du romantisme. Erigé en icône du romantisme par les partisans d’une « Nouvelle Renaissance Classique », Rousseau est accusé de tous les maux de la société moderne : l ’individualisme exacerbé, la perversion des mœurs, le cosmopolitisme, le républicanisme, le sionisme, l’anarchisme et même l’homosexualité. Résumé En taxant le travail apologétique de Ferdinand Brunetière d’« accueillant et généreux», le théologien Edgar Janssens reprenait, en des termes moins dévalorisants, l’idée développée par Charles Maurras selon laquelle les constructions théoriques du directeur de la Revue des Deux Mondes étaient intellectuellement des plus fragiles. Du reste, la grande majorité des philosophes et théologiens qui évaluèrent l’apologétique de Brunetière restèrent dubitatifs devant cette tentative de convoquer la philosophie d’Auguste Comte pour la défense du catholicisme. Pourtant, Brunetière s’insérait (...) dans un mouvement plus vaste de rapprochement de certains courants intellectuels catholiques avec le positivisme dans les années 1890-1900. Des deux aspects essentiels de cette apologétique, l’un épistémologique et l’autre sociologique, c’est le premier qui suscita pour l’essentiel les réserves des intellectuels catholiques. En effet, en pleine crise moderniste, il était difficile, comme le faisait Brunetière, de mettre en avant une théorie relativiste de la connaissance et de baser les conditions de possibilité de la science sur l’Inconnaissable de Spencer. Mais la logique de Brunetière n’était pas celle des théologiens. Sa stratégie d’occupation de l’espace public, les modalités de sa gestion des polémiques ne pouvaient s’éloigner d’un certain nombre de références communes avec ceux-là mêmes qu’il entendait combattre. My paper concerns a rather extraordinary generation which arose in France in the 1930s, reacting against Action française which had long infected French Catholic political and social thought. Action française was a line of thought — and a political movement — inspired by Charles Maurras, himself an agnostic, basing his political thinking on a form of naturalism and positivism which clearly divorced politics from religion and ethics. Pope Pius XI forbade the participation of Catholics in that movement in (...) 1926, which was quite a blow and provoked quite an uproar since the majority of Catholic intellectuals were from Action française.The great Thomists of the time in particular and the bishops were reluctant in following the Pope's condemnation. Already the following year however, Jacques Maritain, who had sided with Action française for a long time, rallied to Rome. He contributed to a famous book Rome has spoken . Many followed him. He subsequently changed his basic views, fought for an integration of politics with morality as well as for a certain integration of politics and the Christian message, under the name Humanisme intégral, the title of one of his books. Jacques Maritain was born in 1882, died in 1975. The decisive years of his work are clearly the '30s and early '40s. (shrink)

Formal definitions found in textbooks and encyclopedias disagree whether comparative psychologists restrict their work to the study of animals or include the study of human behavior. This paper offers an opinion on the major problem facing comparative psychology today – where we will find the next generation of comparative psychology students. Few themes resonate as powerfully in Heidegger as those connected to homecoming, homeland, and Heimat. This emphasis plays out most powerfully in Heidegger's reading of Hölderlin and his turn towards language, art, and poetizing as a way of thinking through the poet's relevance in the epoch of homelessness and the abandonment of the gods. As the first book-length study in English of the Heidegger-Hölderlin relation, Of an Alien Homecoming addresses the tension within Heidegger's work between his disastrous political commitments during (...) the era of National Socialism and his attempts to open a path to a German future nurtured on Hölderlin's ideal of poetic dwelling. Charles Bambach reads this work on Hölderlin from 1934–1948 in conversation with the Black Notebooks and Heidegger's metapolitics, even as he uncovers an ethical dimension within Heidegger that pervades his reading of poetry. The coupling-constitution fallacy claims that arguments for extended cognition involve the inference of “x and y constitute z” from “x is coupled to y” and that such inferences are fallacious. We argue that the coupling-constitution fallacy fails in its goal to undermine the hypothesis of extended cognition: appeal to the coupling-constitution fallacy to rule out possible empirical counterexamples to intracranialism is fallacious. We demonstrate that appeals to coupling-constitution worries are problematic by constructing the fallacious argument against the hypothesis of extended (...) cognition. The last couple of years have seen a rapid growth of interest in the study of crossmodal correspondences – the tendency for our brains to preferentially associate certain features or dimensions of stimuli across the senses. By now, robust empirical evidence supports the existence of numerous crossmodal correspondences, affecting people’s performance across a wide range of psychological tasks – in everything from the redundant target effect paradigm through to studies of the Implicit Association Test, and from speeded discrimination/classification tasks through (...) to unspeeded spatial localisation and temporal order judgment tasks. However, one question that has yet to receive a satisfactory answer is whether crossmodal correspondences automatically affect people’s performance , as opposed to reflecting more of a strategic, or top-down, phenomenon. Here, we review the latest research on the topic of crossmodal correspondences to have addressed this issue. We argue that answering the question will require researchers to be more precise in terms of defining what exactly automaticity entails. Furthermore, one’s answer to the automaticity question may also hinge on the answer to a second question: Namely, whether crossmodal correspondences are all ‘of a kind’, or whether instead there may be several different kinds of crossmodal mapping . Different answers to the automaticity question may then be revealed depending on the type of correspondence under consideration. We make a number of suggestions for future research that might help to determine just how automatic crossmodal correspondences really are. (shrink)

In English law there is a strong presumption that life should be maintained. This article contends that this presumption means that it is always unlawful to withdraw life-sustaining treatment from patients in permanent vegetative state and minimally conscious state, and that the reasons for this being the correct legal analysis mean also that such withdrawal will always be ethically unacceptable. There are two reasons for this conclusion. First, the medical uncertainties inherent in the definition and diagnosis of PVS/MCS are such (...) that, as a matter of medical fact, it can never be established, with the degree of certainty necessary to rebut the presumption, that it is not in the patient’s best interest to remain alive. And second, that even if permanent unconsciousness can be unequivocally demonstrated, the presumption is not rebutted. This is because there is plainly more to human existence than consciousness. It can never be said that the identity of the patient whose best interests are at stake evaporates when that person ceases to be conscious. Nor can it be said that the best interests of an unconscious person do not mandate continued biological existence. We simply cannot know. That uncertainty is legally conclusive, and should be ethically conclusive. (shrink)

In this book, Charles Larmore develops an account of morality, freedom, and reason that rejects the naturalistic metaphysics shaping much of modern thought. Reason, Larmore argues, is responsiveness to reasons, and reasons themselves are essentially normative in character, consisting in the way that physical and psychological facts - facts about the world of nature - count in favor of possibilities of thought and action that we can take up. Moral judgments are true or false in virtue of the moral (...) reasons there are. We need therefore a more comprehensive metaphysics that recognizes a normative dimension to reality as well. Though taking its point of departure in the analysis of moral judgment, this book branches widely into related topics such as freedom and the causal order of the world, textual interpretation, the nature of the self, self-knowledge, and the concept of duties to ourselves.
