Bernoulli Semantics and Ordinal Semantics for Conditionals.Stefan Kaufmann - 2023 - Journal of Philosophical Logic 52 (1):199-220.
Conditionals with conditional constituents pose challenges for _the Thesis_, the idea that the probability of a conditional is the corresponding conditional probability. This note is concerned with two proposals for overcoming those challenges, both inspired by early work of van Fraassen: the _Bernoulli Semantics_ associated with Stalnaker and Jeffrey, and augmented with a mechanism for obtaining “local probabilities” by Kaufmann; and a proposal by Bacon which I dub _Ordinal Semantics_. Despite differences in mathematical details and emphasis of presentation, both proposals (...)

Johann Bernoulli, John Keill and the inverse problem of central forces.Niccol`O. Guicciardini - 1995 - Annals of Science 52 (6):537-575.
Johann Bernoulli in 1710 affirmed that Newton had not proved that conic sections, having a focus in the force centre, were necessary orbits for a body accelerated by an inverse square force. He also criticized Newton's mathematical procedures applied to central forces in Principia mathematica, since, in his opinion, they lacked generality and could be used only if one knew the solution in advance. The development of eighteenth-century dynamics was mainly due to Continental mathematicians who followed Bernoulli's approach (...)

    Bernoulli’s golden theorem in retrospect: error probabilities and trustworthy evidence.Aris Spanos - 2021 - Synthese 199 (5-6):13949-13976.
Bernoulli’s 1713 golden theorem is viewed retrospectively in the context of modern model-based frequentist inference that revolves around the concept of a prespecified statistical model Mθx\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$${\mathcal{M}}_{{{\varvec{\uptheta}}}} \left( {\mathbf{x}} \right)$$\end{document}, defining the inductive premises of inference. It is argued that several widely-accepted claims relating to the golden theorem and frequentist inference are either misleading or erroneous: (a) Bernoulli solved the problem of inference ‘from probability to frequency’, and thus (b) the (...)

    Bernoulli randomness and Bernoulli normality.Andrew DeLapo - 2021 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 67 (3):359-373.
One can consider μ‐Martin‐Löf randomness for a probability measure μ on 2ω, such as the Bernoulli measure given. We study Bernoulli randomness of sequences in with parameters, and we reintroduce Bernoulli normality, where the uniform distribution of digits is replaced with a Bernoulli distribution. We prove the equivalence of three characterizations of Bernoulli normality. We show that every Bernoulli random real is Bernoulli normal, and this has the corollary that the set of (...) normal reals has full Bernoulli measure in. We give an algorithm for computing Bernoulli normal sequences from normal sequences so that we can give explicit examples of Bernoulli normal reals. We investigate an application of randomness to iterated function systems. Finally, we list a few further questions relating to Bernoulli randomness and Bernoulli normality. (shrink)

The Leibniz-de Volder Correspondence: With Selections From the Correspondence Between Leibniz and Johann Bernoulli.G. W. Leibniz - 2013 - Yale University Press.
This volume is a critical edition of the eight-year correspondence between Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and Burcher de Volder, professor of philosophy and mathematics at Leiden University. Containing the surviving correspondence between Leibniz and De Volder, the volume also presents a generous selection from the letters between Leibniz and his friend Johann Bernoulli, through whose intercession the correspondence began. Bernoulli acted as intermediary throughout, and the often candid discussions between Leibniz and Bernoulli provide illuminating background to the correspondence (...)

    The Homogeneous Hamilton–Jacobi and Bernoulli Equations Revisited.Philippe Choquard - 2001 - Foundations of Physics 31 (4):623-640.
The one-dimensional case of the homogeneous Hamilton–Jacobi and Bernoulli equations St $${\raise0.7ex\hbox{$1$} \!\mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 2}}\right.\kern-0em}\!\lower0.7ex\hbox{$2$}}$$ S x 2 =0, where S(x, t) is Hamilton's principal function of a free particle and also Bernoulli's momentum potential of a perfect liquid, is considered. Non-elementary solutions are looked for in terms of odd power series in t with x-dependent coefficients and even power series in x with t-dependent coefficients. In both cases, and depending upon initial conditions, unexpected regularities are observed (...)

The Great Leap to the Infinitely Small. Johann Bernoulli: Mathematician and Philosopher.Gerard Sierksma & Wybe Sierksma - 1999 - Annals of Science 56 (4):433-449.
Johann Bernoulli is known mainly from his mathematical achievements concerning the differential and integral calculus, in which the concept of infinitely small plays a crucial part. This paper describes Bernoulli's struggle with this concept, especially the discrepancies that occur between his mathematical and philosophical interpretations. We concentrate on Bernoulli's Groningen period , in which the discussion with Leibniz about this question leads to a controversy between the two scholars.

The Homogeneous Hamilton–Jacobi and Bernoulli Equations Revisited, II.Joël Wagner & Philippe Choquard - 2002 - Foundations of Physics 32 (8):1225-1249.
It is shown that the admissible solutions of the continuity and Bernoulli or Burgers' equations of a perfect one-dimensional liquid are conditioned by a relation established in 1949–1950 by Pauli, Morette, and Van Hove, apparently, overlooked so far, which, in our case, stipulates that the mass density is proportional to the second derivative of the velocity potential. Positivity of the density implies convexity of the potential, i.e., smooth solutions, no shock. Non-elementary and symmetric solutions of the above equations are (...)

Lodge’s transcriptions reflect his careful study of all the available (...)

The first of its kind, this book is an in-depth history of hydrodynamics from its eighteenth-century foundations to its first major successes in twentieth-century hydraulics and aeronautics. It documents the foundational role of fluid mechanics in developing a new mathematical physics. It gives full and clear accounts of the conceptual breakthroughs of physicists and engineers who tried to meet challenges in the practical worlds of hydraulics, navigation, blood circulation, meteorology, and aeronautics, and it shows how hydrodynamics at last began to (...)

A short seventeenth-century text, sometimes cited as one of the first essays in mathematical logic, is introduced, translated and evaluated. Although by no means sharing the depth and magnitude of the investigations by Leibniz being undertaken at the same time, and although in particular not yet applying algebraic symbolism to logical structures, the treatise is of historical interest as an early published attempt to trace out analogies between logical and mathematical form, and may be viewed as a preliminary step toward (...)
