Wincenty Lutosławski was a multilingual Polish philosopher and author who coined the term 'stylometry'. Originally published in 1930, this book presents the outline of a course in metaphysics delivered by Lutosławski at a variety of academic institutions from 1890 onwards. Numerous aspects of reality are discussed in an effort to form a unified conception of it, from the material world through to abstract spirituality. L’auteur définit l’extase comme l’union d’une âme avec un être qui lui est très supérieur, qui intensifie son intelligence et qui fortifie sa volonté. Vincent Buczyński was one of the most outstanding 19th-century Jesuit philosophers from Poland. He worked in several countries as a philosopher and theologian. The chronology of his work is as follows: Połock, Tarnopol, Nowy Sącz, Graz, Linz, Namur and Louvain. He published a three-part work entitled Institutiones Philosophicae, and a book Institutiones Doctrinae Religionis.

Wincenty Lutosławski (1863–1954) was internationally recognized in the academic world as a prominent Plato scholar. His fragmentary correspondence with Bertrand Russell is presented in this paper. Before World War II he initiated an exchange of letters with Russell on issues such as reincarnation, but the replies he received were laconic and discouraging. This changed, however, after the war when Russell published his History of Western Philosophy. Despite their different philosophical positions, Lutosławski’s opinion on this work as a whole was (...) favourable, in particular the chapters on Plato. Such an assessment was the exception rather than the rule for that book, and knowing Lutosławski’s general recognition in Platonic studies, Russell forwarded the letter to his publisher. (shrink)

This is the Preface to the doctoral thesis of Benedykt Woyczyński - one of the disciples of Wincenty Lutosławski.

Starting with the words that finish, or interrupt Master Wincenty’s Polish Chronicle, I interpret its historiographic content as characteristic of 12th century humanism, expression of love, of wisdom. The infallible condition of ethicalarete may be found to be formulated in the last words of the Chronicle concerning humanity which consists in tolerant indulgence of others’ vices and modesty about one’s virtues.
