Do not Block the Path of Inquiry!Wendy Wheeler - 2008 - American Journal of Semiotics 24 (1-3):171-187.
Drawing on biosemiotic theory and the Peircean idea of ‘abduction’, I shall propose the idea of a layered structure of bio / semiotic evolution, in which humanknowledge is systemic and recursive — and thus emergent both from what is forgotten and from earlier evolutionary strata. I will argue that abductions are those processes by which we move creatively between often unacknowledged types of knowledge which are rooted in our natural and cultural evolutionary past (e.g., unconscious, preconscious, or tacit knowledge; knowledge (...)

The Influence of Network Exchange Brokers on Sustainable Initiatives in Organizational Networks.Lance W. Saunders, Wendy L. Tate, George A. Zsidisin & Joe Miemczyk - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 154 (3):849-868.
Ethical sourcing and socially responsible purchasing is increasingly on the business agenda, but developing and implementing policy and practice across a global network of suppliers is challenging. The purpose of this paper is to expand theory on the nature of linkages between firms in a social network, specifically postulating how ties between organizations can be configured to facilitate development, diffusion, and adoption of sustainability initiatives. The theory development provides a lens with which to view the influence of a firm’s structural (...)

  14. Serendipity Science.Samantha Copeland, Wendy Ross & Martin Sand (eds.) - 2023 - Cham: Springer.
Serendipity is fundamental to science. This quirky and intriguing phenomenon permeates across scientific disciplines, including the medical sciences, psychological sciences, management and organizational sciences, innovation science, philosophy and library and information sciences. Why is it so ubiquitous? Because of what it facilitates and catalyzes: scientific discoveries from velcro to Viagra, innovation of all forms, unexpected encounters of useful information, novel and important ideas, and deep reflection on how we, as individuals, organizations, communities and societies can take leaps forwards by seizing (...)

Defiant daughters: 21 women on art, activism, animals, and the sexual politics of meat.Kara Davis & Wendy Lee (eds.) - 2013 - New York: Lantern Books.
When The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory by Carol J. Adams was published more than twenty years ago, it caused a immediate stir among writers and thinkers, feminists and animal rights activists alike. Never before had the relationship between patriarchy and meat eating been drawn so clearly, the idea that there lies a strong connection between the consumption of women and animals so plainly asserted. But, as the 21 personal stories in this anthology show, the impact of (...)

    A pathological goodness: Emmanuel Levinas' post-holocaust ethics.Wendy Hamblet - 2006 - Minerva - An Internet Journal of Philosophy 10 (1).
This essay offers a detailed and comprehensive study of the ethical thought of post-Holocaust phenomenologist, Emmanuel Levinas, through the lens of human passions. On sovereignty and trespass: The moral failure of Levinas' phenomenological ethics.Wendy C. Hamblet - 2004 - Minerva - An Internet Journal of Philosophy 8 (1).
Mortal being is not being pure and simple, not posit-ive being alone, as the lived experience suggests it to be. Living being is always a living of mortal flesh, a living taunted by death as “the nothingness that wearies it.” This taunting doggedly pursues the living being and turns it inward in what Levinas terms “inter-esse.” In living its mortality, essence is always inter-esse — inside of itself — in the for-itself of self-interest. This paper attempts to track the opening (...)

    Is Trafficking Slavery? Anti-Slavery International in the Twenty-first Century.Wendy H. Wong - 2011 - Human Rights Review 12 (3):315-328.
Why was Anti-Slavery International (ASI) so effective at changing norms slavery and even mobilizing the support that ended the transatlantic slave trade at the end of the nineteenth century, and why has that success not continued on into subsequent eras? This article claims that ASI's organizational structure is the key to understanding why its accomplishments in earlier eras have yet to be replicated, and why today it struggles to make modern forms of slavery, such as human trafficking, salient political issues. (...)

    II—Wendy S. Parker: Confirmation and adequacy-for-Purpose in Climate Modelling.Wendy S. Parker - 2009 - Aristotelian Society Supplementary Volume 83 (1):233-249.
Lloyd (2009) contends that climate models are confirmed by various instances of fit between their output and observational data. The present paper argues that what these instances of fit might confirm are not climate models themselves, but rather hypotheses about the adequacy of climate models for particular purposes. This required shift in thinking—from confirming climate models to confirming their adequacy-for-purpose—may sound trivial, but it is shown to complicate the evaluation of climate models considerably, both in principle and in practice.
