This essay analyzes one of Germany's former premier research institutions for biomedical research, the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Anthropology, Human Heredity and Eugenics (KWIA) as a test case for the way in which politics and human heredity served as resources for each other during the Third Reich. Examining the KWIA from this perspective brings us a step closer to answering the questions at the heart of most recent scholarship concerning the biomedical community under the swastika: (1) How do we explain (...) why the vast majority of German human geneticists and eugenicists were willing to work for the National Socialist state and, at the very least, legitimized its exterminationist racial policy; and (2) what accounts for at least some of Germany's most renowned medically trained professionals' involvement in forms of morally compromised science that wholly transcend the bounds of normal scientific practice? Although a complete answer to this question must await an examination of other German biological research centers, the present study suggests that during the Nazi period the symbiotic relationship between human genetics and politics served to radicalize both. The dynamic between the science of human heredity and Nazi politics changed the research practice of some of the biomedical sciences housed at the KWIA. It also simultaneously made it easier for the Nazi state to carry out its barbaric racial program leading, finally, to the extermination of millions of so-called racial undesirables. (shrink)

It is widely held that our beliefs can be epistemically faultless despite being morally flawed. Theories of moral encroachment challenge this, holding that moral considerations bear on the epistemic status of our attitudes. According to attitude-based theories of moral encroachment, morality encroaches upon the epistemic standing of our attitudes on the grounds that we can morally injure others with our epistemic practices. In this paper, I aim to show that current attitude-based theories have asymmetric mechanisms: moral features only make it (...) harder for attitudes to secure epistemic merits. I argue that, if attitudes can incur moral injury, failure to form attitudes can too. To make sense of this, I contend, attitude-based accounts require symmetric mechanisms, allowing that moral considerations make it both harder and easier for attitudes to attain epistemic merits. I maintain that, once we recognize this, attitude-based encroachment views must soon concede that they sometimes demand we believe against the evidence. (shrink)

This paper critically assesses existing accounts of the nature of difficulty, finds them wanting, and proposes a new account. The concept of difficulty is routinely invoked in debates regarding degrees of moral responsibility, and the value of achievement. Until recently, however, there has not been any sustained attempt to provide an account of the nature of difficulty itself. This has changed with Gwen Bradford’s Achievement, which argues that difficulty is a matter of how much intense effort is expended. But while (...) this account captures something important about the relationship between difficulty and achievement, it fails to account for the fact that part of what makes achievements great is that they are difficult in a moderately agent-neutral kind of way. Nor is this thought captured by any other extant account. I argue that to fill this gap we should think of difficulty in terms of low probability of success. (shrink)

In this paper we investigate the structure of uncountable maximal antichains of Silver forcing and show that they have to be at least of size d, where d is the dominating number. Part of this work can be used to show that the additivity of the Silver forcing ideal has size at least the unbounding number b. It follows that every reasonable amoeba Silver forcing adds a dominating real.

The structure of derivations in natural deduction is analyzed through isomorphism with a suitable sequent calculus, with twelve hidden convertibilities revealed in usual natural deduction. A general formulation of conjunction and implication elimination rules is given, analogous to disjunction elimination. Normalization through permutative conversions now applies in all cases. Derivations in normal form have all major premisses of elimination rules as assumptions. Conversion in any order terminates.Through the condition that in a cut-free derivation of the sequent Γ⇒C, no inactive weakening (...) or contraction formulas remain in Γ, a correspondence with the formal derivability relation of natural deduction is obtained: All formulas of Γ become open assumptions in natural deduction, through an inductively defined translation. Weakenings are interpreted as vacuous discharges, and contractions as multiple discharges. Contemporary theories of criminalisation address, with varying emphasis, themes concerning the harmfulness and the wrongfulness of the conduct. In his article for the present issue, Antony Duff relies chiefly on notions of wrongfulness as the basis for his proposed criminalisation doctrines; whereas in their 2011 volume on criminalisation, Andrew Simester and Andreas von Hirsch invoke both wrongfulness and harmfulness as prerequisites for prohibiting conduct. The present article assesses the comparative merits of these approaches, and argues in favour of the latter, (...) two-element perspective. In this article, the author puts forward a number of reasons suggesting why the two-element approach is preferable. These reasons include, firstly, an inductive argument—that the kinds of wrongful conduct for which criminalisation seems a plausible response are those that include an element of harm or risk of harm. Secondly, a defining role for the state is one of resource-protection: of safeguarding the means and resources through which citizens can live good lives. Thus the concept of citizens’ living resources—and the related conception of harm—should be made a constitutive and explicit element of criminalisation theory, rather than subsuming resource-protection under a general rubric of wrongfulness. Thirdly, a two-element approach provides reciprocal limiting principles concerning the scope of criminalisation. One can, for example, employ wrongfulness requirements to limit the criminalisation of conduct that has remote harmful consequences; and, conversely, use a harmfulness requirement as means for restricting the criminalisation of wrongful acts. The great Locke scholar W. von Leyden introduces each of these works, setting them in their historical context. This volume is an invaluable source for Locke's early thought, of interest to philosophers, political theorists, jurists, theologians, and historians.

A normalization procedure is given for classical natural deduction with the standard rule of indirect proof applied to arbitrary formulas. For normal derivability and the subformula property, it is sufficient to permute down instances of indirect proof whenever they have been used for concluding a major premiss of an elimination rule. The result applies even to natural deduction for classical modal logic.

Zusammenfassung. Der folgende Artikel stellt das Urteilsbildungsmodell der neonatalen Intensivstation der Universitätsfrauenklinik in Zürich vor. Das Modell wurde in einem Zeitraum von drei Jahren von einer interdisziplinären Arbeitsgruppe von Ärzten, Pflegenden und einer Spitalseelsorgerin unter der Leitung einer Ethikerin erarbeitet. Das Modell stellt eine Alternative zur Entscheidungsfindung entweder aufgrund von Regeln und Richtlinien oder aufgrund einer Situationsethik dar. Es ist als ein Geborgenheitsraum für das Kind gegen Entscheidungswillkür sowohl auf Seiten der Ärzteschaft als auch auf Seiten der Eltern gedacht. Zur (...) In ihm hallte eine lange Geschichte von Himmelsgloben, Armillarsphären, Astrolabien und mechanischen Planetarien nach, die seit der Antike als astronomische Demonstrationsobjekte gedient hatten. Erstmals aber fand sich diese Aufgabe nun mit einer Simulation des raum-zeitlichen In-der-Welt-Seins des Menschen verbunden.

En este artículo, presentamos los resultados parciales producidos en la primera etapa de un proyecto de investigación que se desarrolla en tres zonas geográficas de Argentina: Buenos Aires, Rosario y Córdoba. Toma por objeto los programas de espectáculos televisivos y propone una investigación articulada en tres dimensiones: análisis de contenidos, recepción y rutinas profesionales. Durante el primer periodo de trabajo, ejecutado en 2016, nos hemos centrado en el análisis de las audiencias, indagando sobre la relevancia que otorgan las/os televidentes a (...) este tipo de programas (y/o segmentos), atendiendo a las maneras en que los sujetos dan sentido a los contenidos. In this study, the systematic position and the specific function of the transcendental logic are presented, based on the first series of lectures on transcendental logic by Fichte in the spring of 1812. In addition to the external localization of these lectures in the oeuvre of Fichte, the main focus is on the elaboration of the specific activity of philosophy, which deals with understanding and the nature and the genesis of concepts. This takes place in a distinction from pure logic; (...) for that reason the essence of logic and its specific role within philosophy are described. The dynamic development of the structure of knowledge is the main momentum of the transcendental logic. The question of the relation between intuition and concept is of decisive importance as well as the question of the possibility of the formation of empirical concepts. The ultimate goal is the comprehension of knowledge itself, the concept of the concept. Similarities and differences to Kant’s Transcendental Logic in the Critique of Pure Reason are also discussed.In dieser Untersuchung wird, ausgehend von der ersten Vorlesung zur transzendentalen Logik Fichtes im Frühjahr 1812, deren systematischer Ort und die spezifische Funktion einer transzendentalen Logik dargestellt.
