The purpose of this article is twofold. First, on the basis of a re-examination of the sources and with new arguments, it discusses the meaning of a verse-fragment quoted anonymously by Servius ad Aen. 4.638 (Enn. Ann. Dub. Fr. V Sk. = Inc. 31 blänsdorf, p. 434 courtney), and supports the attribution of this fragment to Ennius’ “Annales”. Second, it demonstrates that this attribution is not undermined by the presence, in the fragment, of a parenthetical phrase that is “in apposition”, (...) a stylistic feature which, though commonly believed to date back to Virgil’s time, may, in fact, be also attested in another Ennian fragment from the “Annales” (Enn. L’article analyse le concept de mort dans l’œuvre d’Ernst Bloch, qui constitue un défi majeur pour le principe espérance. Lorsque Bloch aborde cette question dans ses textes, il lie la dimension du deuil au thème du travail de la vie. Si ce dernier est en fait la quête d’un sens ultime et définitif, il ne peut advenir qu’en allant à l’encontre de la finitude elle-même. Or, ce n’est qu’en se consacrant pleinement à la tâche qu’est la vie que l’existence humaine (...) peut trouver son sens. Este artículo presenta una figura clave del humanismo político. Brunetto Latini surge de un ambiente intelectual laico cuyo auge se debe a la consolidación de un ámbito político autónomo, la ciudad. La progresiva apertura del poder a un amplio espectro de ciudadanos plantea un cambio en la práctica política cotidiana. La burguesía florentina, artífice de un crecimiento económico sin precedentes, aporta nuevas reglas al juego político e intenta legitimarlas ante los ojos de los mayores actores políticos de Europa. Brunetto (...) Latini interviene en este proceso aportando un hábeas teórico en la frágil república florentina que establece las bases éticas y prácticas del vivere civile. Su obra enciclopédica se alimenta de las diversas tradiciones intelectuales con las cuales estuvo en contacto, y muestra un interés inusual por los pensadores antiguos. Latini redacta en lenguas romances y vulgariza por vez primera la Ética Nicomáquea de Aristóteles y el De inventione de Cicerón. By the Roman age the traditional stories of Greek myth had long since ceased to reflect popular culture, and become instead a central element in elite culture. This book illustrates the importance of semi-learned mythographic handbooks in the social, literary, and artistic world of Rome. One of the most intriguing features of these works is the fact that they all cite classical sources for the stories they tell, sources which are often forged.

L’écriture généalogique et l’enchaînement de filiations en catalogue sont un des modes narratifs caractéristiques de la mythographie, mais on les retrouve aussi bien au cœur d’un corpus apparemment distinct, celui de la doxographie. Que ce soit G. Dumézil, composant différents dispositifs autobiographiques, ou Diogène Laërce, le doxographe utilise la systématique généalogique pour mettre de l’ordre dans l’histoire d’une transmission du savoir. Faut-il voir cependant une simple adaptation du modèle généalogique par la doxographie ? La relation de maître à disciple est-elle (...) la transposition immédiate de la relation de filiation ? C’est en fait un parcours complexe qui se dessine entre ces deux pôles, qui passe par la question de l’origine et de la transmission de la loi. De Minos à Pythagore, entre philosophie politique de l’époque classique et mystique néo-platonicienne, l’ordre généalogique ne va pas de soi et possède une histoire propre.Genealogical Order: Between Mythography and Doxography. Genealogical writing and the listing of filiations represent one of the narrative modes characteristic of mythography, but they may also be found within the apparently distinct corpus of doxography. Doxographers such as G. Dumézil, who wrote a number of autobiographies, and Diogenus Laertius, make use of genealogical systematics to put in order the story of knowledge transmission. Is it simply a case of an adaptation of the genealogical model to the doxographic narrative? Is the relationship between master and disciple just a transposition of filiation? In fact, a more complex pattern develops between mythography and doxography, linked to the theme of origin and transmission of the law. From Minos to Pythagoras, between classical political philosophy and neo-platonic mysticism, genealogical order is not self-evident and has its own history. (shrink)

Ces dernières décennies, il est devenu habituel de considérer que la polis de la période classique contrôlait la religion sous tous ces aspects. Ce n’est que récemment que ce point de vue a été mis en question. Même si les aspects plus marginaux de la religion de la polis ont déjà reçu l’attention nécessaire, leur étude reste marquée, dans une certaine mesure, par les préjugés des savants des générations antérieures, eux-mêmes nourris des préjugés et des représentations des auteurs anciens. Cet (...) article se concentre sur les lieux de la vie reli­gieuse grecque, et plus particulièrement athénienne, où des livres et de l’écrit étaient particu­lièrement importants, dans la mesure où l’écrit permet aux gens de prendre une position plus indépendante en regard de la religion de la polis. Mes observations concerneront les manteis , la magie , les mystères et l’Orphisme , la mythographie , en terminant par quelques considérations sur la nature de la religion de la polis .In recent decades it has become customary to assume that in the classical period the polis controlled religion in all its aspects. It is only recently that this view is being questioned. Although the more marginal aspects of polis religion have already received the necessary attention, the study of these marginal aspects remains dominated, to a certain extent, by old prejudices of previous generations of scholars, which in turn were sometimes fed by the prejudices or representations of ancient authors. I will concentrate on those areas of Greek, especially Athenian, religious life in which books and writing were particularly important, as the written word enabled people to take a more independent stance in polis religion. Subsequently, I will make observations on manteis , magic , mysteries and Orphism and mythography , and end with some remarks on the nature of polis religion. (shrink)

'An extremely useful collection of the early evidence for writers of 'myth as history' -D. Felton, Bryn Mawr Classical ReviewThis is the first volume in a set of two. Volume 1 introduces and collects together the scattered quotations of the Greek writers of the sixth to the fourth centuries BC who first recorded in prose the tales of Greek mythology, whilst Volume 2 will be a scholarly commentary.

The mid-thirteenth-century theorist and rhetorician Brunetto Latini proposed a vigorous republican account of the art of government and the nature of community in his encyclopedic treatise, Li Livres dou Tresor. The interpretation of Latini's republicanism has been heavily based on its literary sensibilities, its attachment to rhetoric, and its praise for classical civic virtues. But Latini deserves to be classified as a republican insofar as he founds social and political order upon commercial principles-the production and exchange of (...) material goods for profit-and consequent economic defense of republican government. Hence, the example of Latini challenges one of the principal remaining barriers that supposedly separates medieval defenses of republicanism from Renaissance versions. The essay contends that Latini holds that self-governing institutions depend upon and are especially well suited to sustain a society whose conception of the common good includes the creation and exchange of those material necessities required for physical welfare and comfort. El artículo es una aportación al estudio de la antropología política del protohumanismo florentino, centrado en la obra y la figura del maestro de retórica de Dante, el notario Brunetto Latini. Nos ocupamos de exponer la conexión existente entre el desarrollo del gobierno comunal en la península italiana del Duecento y la difusión de una prosa marcadamente pragmática, extendida especialmente entre jueces y notarios, que preconiza la prelacía de la filosofía práctica con respecto a la teoría y la teología. Se toman también en consideración aquellos factores que manifiestan la ruptura del Convivio y de la Commedia de Dante con los supuestos doctrinales de Latini, subrayando la apuesta de Alighieri por una teología poética, que contrasta con la forma de vida inmanente proyectada por la visión enciclopédica del notario, recogida en sus escritos retóricos y políticos. This article will examine how and why Cicero and Diodorus of Sicily used, in texts questioning the nature of the gods, a kind of discourse typical of this project of saving the past by reassessing it: the discourse of mythographers. In this article I consider five anonymous quotations in Stephanus of Byzantium. The first is very probably an overlooked fragment of early mythography. The other four are much less likely to be early, but theoretically could be and are included for the sake of completeness.
