  6. Phänomenologische Anthropologie und Psychologie im Werk Javier San Martins.Martín Mercado Vásquez & Alexander Nicolai Wendt - 2021 - Phänomenologische Forschungen 2021 (1):102-125.
The relationship between phenomenology and the sciences is of complex nature. In particular, the transcendental phenomenological position seems to promote skeptical reservations about the scientific attitude. Phenomenological anthropology and psychology, however, are an exception. The work of the Spanish philosopher Javier San Martin addresses the relationship of Husserlian phenomenology to these two particular sciences. In this paper, the work of Navarrese will be revisited as an occasion to reflect on the relationship between phenomenology and the sciences. In the first part, (...)

Antinous and the Games of the Koinon of the Achaeans and the Arcadians in Mantinea.Rocío Gordillo Hervás - 2020 - Hermes 148 (2):218.
Hadrian’s agonistic calendar, as it was found inscribed in a stele of Alexandria Troad, mentions within its fourth Olympic year the “games of the Koinon of the Achaeans and Arcadians which are celebrated in Mantinea”. Following the interpretation of the editors of the stele, G. Petzl and E. Schwertheim, this article aims to identify these games as those which were organized by the city in honour of Antinous. The epigraphic sources that mention the Mantinean games, mainly those related to the (...)

Decoupling from international food safety standards: how small-scale indigenous farmers cope with conflicting institutions to ensure market participation.Geovana Mercado, Carsten Nico Hjortsø & Benson Honig - 2018 - Agriculture and Human Values 35 (3):651-669.
Although inclusion in formal value chains extends the prospect of improving the livelihoods of rural small-scale producers, such a step is often contingent on compliance with internationally-promoted food safety standards. Limited research has addressed the challenges this represents for small rural producers who, grounded in culturally-embedded food safety conceptions, face difficulties in complying. We address this gap here through a multiple case study involving four public school feeding programs that source meals from local rural providers in the Bolivian Altiplan. Institutional (...)

Delay or accelerate the end? Messianism, accelerationism and presentism.Alfonso Galindo Hervás - 2016 - International Journal of Philosophy and Theology 77 (4-5):307-323.
ABSTRACTThis article analyzes different positions on the relationship between politics and the experience of time, both those which defend the legitimacy of institutions and those which claim to liquidate them. Recognizing the links between certain theological arguments and certain modalities of time and politics, the article describes and analyzes three different theses: the one that defends institutions against the erosion of subjectivity in capitalist societies, the one that proposes a mystical anarchism with a messianic profile and, finally, the thesis that (...)

This text analyzes the importance of space and time in Th. W. Adorno’s philosophy in his late writings. First, it is delineated the shift that Adorno’s thought experienced from 1957, due to the H-K. Metzger’s criticism. Adorno not only reviews his posture in musicological aspects, but music leads him to reflect on the dialectical relationship between the static and the dynamic, how the tension between the sound and the image is articulated and, above all, how both elements affect a non-representative (...)

Assessing the Novelty of Computer-Generated Narratives Using Empirical Metrics.Federico Peinado, Virginia Francisco, Raquel Hervás & Pablo Gervás - 2010 - Minds and Machines 20 (4):565-588.
Novelty is a key concept to understand creativity. Evaluating a piece of artwork or other creation in terms of novelty requires comparisons to other works and considerations about the elements that have been reused in the creative process. Human beings perform this analysis intuitively, but in order to simulate it using computers, the objects to be compared and the similarity metrics to be used should be formalized and explicitly implemented. In this paper we present a study on relevant elements for (...)

The Moral Foreign Language Effect: Do Languages Influence How We Make Moral Decisions?Bektas Ms - 2023 - Philosophy International Journal 6 (2):1-8.
Both philosophy and linguistics have emphasized the importance of language as a means of dialogue. Despite the fact that Wittgenstein added a new layer of complication to this point of view, the Sapir-Whorf theory, proposed by Edward Sapir and his colleague Benjamin Lee Whorf, helped the impact of language on the mind acquire notoriety. With this idea, language not only continued to be a means of communication but also received recognition in the social science curriculum as a crucial element in (...)

Can We Be Creative with Communication? Assessing Decision-Making Capacity in an Adult with Selective Mutism.Nicholas R. Mercado - forthcoming - HEC Forum:1-7.
Selective mutism is an anxiety disorder in which an individual is unable to speak in certain social situations though may speak normally in other settings (Hua & Major, 2016 ). Selective mutism in adults is rare, though people with this condition might have other methods of communicating their needs outside of verbal communication. Healthcare professionals rely on a patient’s ability to communicate to establish if they have decision-making capacity. This commentary responds to a case of a young adult patient with (...)

The first method, proposed by Philippe Breton, is based on a protocol that includes three actions: distancing, active listening (...)

Taylor's political proposal is based on a particular way of explaining human action. The modern ideal of authenticity is used to underline the role of responsibility in personal agency. Aristotelian prudence or phronesis is considered one of the best interpretations of practical reason for completing the ideal of authenticity because it includes the distinction among goods and their influence in everyone's life. The contemporary notion of horizon is an aid for understanding the role of cultural frames and dialogical exchange in (...)

Experiments are the key to understanding socially acquired knowledge in cetaceans.Eduardo Mercado & Caroline M. DeLong - 2001 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 24 (2):345-345.
We agree with Rendell and Whitehead that cetaceans acquire knowledge from caretakers and peers, and that a clear understanding of this process can provide insight into the evolution of mammalian cognition. The passive observational methods they advocate, however, are inadequate for determining what cetaceans know. Only by experimentally investigating the cognition of cetaceans can we hope to understand what they learn through social interactions.

The theoretical framework proposed by Dienes & Perner sets the wrong standards for knowledge to be considered explicit. Animals other than humans possess knowledge, too, some of which is probably explicit. We argue that a comparative approach to investigating knowledge is likely to be more fruitful than one based on linguistic constructs and unobservable phenomena.

Singing humpback whales (Megaptera noavaengliae) collectively and progressively change the sounds and patterns they produce within their songs throughout their lives. The dynamic modifications that humpback whales make to their songs are often cited as an impressive example of cultural transmission through vocal learning in a non-human. Some elements of song change challenge this interpretation, however, including: (1) singers often incrementally and progressively morph phrases within and across songs as time passes, with trajectories of change being comparable across multiple time (...)

The current crises put before us alternatives of action that require decision; for example, the decision of whether to deploy or investigate SRM geoengineering to counter global warming, which is here taken as the central example. Attending to the ontological richness of value in the elements of the world, of which scientific models and thought are a very particular and limited kind, can cast a different light into the decision process, which otherwise would almost unavoidably devolve into “infernal alternatives,” as (...)

The concept of biological information, and information in general, usually presupposes a purely quantitative view of reality. Even though actualist quantification has an important place in the description of the world, a nominalistic stance that tries to simplify reality in purely actualist terms inevitably runs into inconsistencies; these inconsistencies have been pointed out by the critical assessments of the notion of biological information. Rather than calling for an abandonment of the informational terminology, we try to rethink information as a part (...)
