The Public/private Distinction Now: The Challenges of Privatization and of the Regulatory State.Hila Shamir - 2014 - Theoretical Inquiries in Law 15 (1):1-26.
This Article examines what form the public/private distinction takes in contemporary legal consciousness. It proposes that while the public/ private distinction is still an important component of contemporary legal consciousness, the content of each sphere, their stability as distinct spheres, and their interaction with each other have significantly changed. This transformation occurred primarily due to the rise of the regulatory state and the increased visibility of the interconnectedness of the spheres due to public ordering of private activity in an age (...)

    Comment: Interjections and Expressivity.Nick Riemer - 2014 - Emotion Review 6 (1):64-65.
Natural semantic metalanguage assumes that interjections’ meaning is principally conceptual. However, the expressive character of immediate interjections requires the rejection of any conceptualist approach to their meaning. When compared with vocabulary for which a conceptual account is most plausible, immediate uses of interjections appear to fail a basic requirement on the postulation of conceptual meaning.

What Does Not Tremble Is Not Stable: Three Philosophical Streams from the Spring of (Un)Certainty.Hila Naot - 2023 - Research in Phenomenology 53 (2):162-178.
The article proposes a phenomenological journey through three concepts of uncertainty – those of Blaise Pascal, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and Jan Patočka. The discussion focuses on the meaning of certainty and uncertainty and on the mutual relations between the two according to each philosopher. Adopting an embodied philosophical-poetic perspective enables the dialectical relations prevailing between these three conceptions to emerge, clarifying that, despite their differences, they share a deep attachment to the transcendent dimension of human existence. This dimension is described as (...)

Gaining control? bilateral labor agreements and the shared interest of sending and receiving countries to control migrant workers and the illicit migration industry.Hila Shamir & Yuval Livnat - 2022 - Theoretical Inquiries in Law 23 (2):65-94.
Countries increasingly have been entering bilateral labor agreements as a tool for the regulation and governance of short-term temporary labor migration worldwide. However, these are often confidential legal instruments, and consequently we know relatively little about their actual content and impact, and why countries choose to enter them. This Article complements existing explanations in the literature regarding the reasons why countries enter BLAs and their potential to create and improve migrant workers’ rights. Based on a detailed content analysis of 81 (...)

Phenomenologically-Informed Cancer Care: An Entryway into the Art of Medicine.Casey Rentmeester, Mark Bake & Amy Riemer - 2022 - Journal of Medical Humanities 2022 (3):443-453.
There has been increased interest in what the philosophical subdiscipline of phenomenology can contribute to medical humanities due to its dual emphases on practicality and its attempt to understand the experience of others, thus positioning it as a potentially helpful conceptual toolkit to guide clinical care. Using various figures from the phenomenological tradition, most prominently Martin Heidegger and Martin Buber, the authors illuminate relevant philosophical concepts, employ them in various examples, and provide three principles revolving around empathy, communication, and listening (...)

    Reductive paraphrase and meaning: A critique of wierzbickian semantics. [REVIEW]Nick Riemer - 2006 - Linguistics and Philosophy 29 (3):347 - 379.
This article explores some fundamental issues of definition-based lexical semantic research through a critique of the Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) theory of semantic and grammatical description (Wierzbicka 1996, Semantics. Primes and Universals, Oxford University Press, Oxford). NSM is criticized for attaching excessive importance to explanatory definition, for its adoption of the reductive requirement that a definiens be simpler than a definiendum, and for its use of ‘canonical contexts’ to disambiguate meaning. The principle of substitutability, according to which a definition of (...)

  35. Challenging the philosophical foundations of modeling organizational reality: the case of process modeling.Kai Riemer, Robert Johnston, Dirk Hovorka & Marta Indulska - unknown
Representing organizational reality in conceptual models is an important part of IS practice. In this paper we expose and challenge the taken-for-granted ontological and epistemological assumptions that underpin common accounts of conceptual modeling, using process modeling as an example. We argue that, due to an implicit commitment to a dualist ontology and representationalist epistemology, much literature regards the elicitation and representation of reality in the course of modeling as largely unproblematic. We draw on Martin Heidegger's holistic philosophy to give an (...)

The areas of interest of the scholar of religious studies, Karl E. Grozinger, are diverse. His research is concentrated on the religious and cultural history of Judaism throughout the ages: Israel in antiquity, the era of rabbinical traditional literature, philosophy of religion during the Middle Ages, the kabbalistic tradition, as well as Jewish thinkers and devout movements in contemporary times. On the occasion of Professor Grozinger's seventieth birthday, numerous scholars present the first fruits of their current research as a first (...)

Fostering Cultures of Sustainability in a Multi-Unit Office Building: A Theory of Change.Bianca Christel Dreyer, Manuel Riemer, Brittany Spadafore, Joel Marcus, Devon Fernandes, Allan Taylor, Stephanie Whitney, Sean Geobey & Aisling Dennett - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Psychological approaches to fostering sustainability are heavily focused on individual behaviors and often insufficiently address the physical and social contexts individuals are embedded in. This limits the ability to create meaningful, long-lasting change, as many of day-to-day behaviors are social practices embedded in broader cultural norms and systems. This is particularly true in the work context, where organizational cultures heavily condition both the actions of individual employees and the collective actions of organizations. Thus, we argue cultures, not behaviors, must become (...)
