Contemporary infectious disease surveillance systems aim to employ the speed and scope of big data in an attempt to provide global health security. Both shifts - the perception of health problems through the framework of global health security and the corresponding technological approaches – imply epistemological changes, methodological ambivalences as well as manifold societal effects. Bringing current findings from social sciences and public health praxis into a dialogue, this conversation style contribution points out several broader implications of changing disease surveillance. The conversation covers epidemiological issues such as the shift from expert knowledge to algorithmic knowledge, the securitization of global health, and the construction of new kinds of threats. This paper addresses an article by Felix Klein of 1886, in which he generalized his theory of polynomial equations of degree 5—comprehensively discussed in his Lectures on the Icosahedron two years earlier—to equations of degree 6 and 7. To do so, Klein used results previously established in line geometry. I review Klein’s 1886 article, its diverse mathematical background, and its place within the broader history of mathematics. I argue that the program advanced by this article, although historically overlooked due to (...) its eventual failure, offers a valuable insight into a time of crucial evolution of the subject. Im Gegensatz zu manchen Theorien der Globalisierung, die eine immer einheitlichere Welt postulieren oder vorhersagen, wird die Doppeldeutigkeit des Globalisierungsprozesses aufgewiesen. Selbst in ökonomischer Hinsicht, dem Paradebeispiel für Globalisierung, lässt sich zeigen, dass die Welt nicht nur eine ist, sondern aus vielen Welten besteht. Dies gilt im gleichen Maße für die auf eine Weltrepublik oder gar einen Weltstaat spekulierenden politischen Philosophien. Zudem wird moralphilosophisch dafür argumentiert, dass der Moderne nicht nur eine universale Moral, sondern auch und immer noch eine auf (...) Sittlichkeit reflektierende Ethik zugehört. (shrink)

Joachim Ritter und andere versuchten es, Geisteswissenschaften durch „Kompensationstheorie“ zu rechtfertigen. Ritter zufolge ersetzen die Geisteswissenschaften die infolge des Modernisierungsprogresses ausgelösten Verluste und Risiken. Die Kompensationstheorie scheint eine Rechtfertigung der Geisteswissenschaften in Bezug auf die Dynamik der modernen Welt zu bieten. Prima facie erscheint dies attraktiv, zu Zeiten, wenn der Erfolg der Naturwissenschaften und Technologie augenfällig ist und die Geisteswissenschaften in die Defensive gedrängt werden. Der Artikel erhebt jedoch vier Einwände gegen die Kompensationstheorie: Die Theorie sei durch ein antiquarisches Interesse (...) an der Geschichte geprägt; sie ziehe lediglich die konservatorische Funktion der Geisteswissenschaften in Erwägung; sie stufe die Geisteswissenschaften zu einem bloßem Anhang und zu einer bloßen Ergänzung kultureller Änderung herunter; und schließlich überschätze sie die Fähigkeit der Geisteswissenschaften, die Verluste und Risiken der Modernisierung im Gleichgewicht zu halten. Eine Abhandlung über die Kirchengeschichte kompensiert keine modernen Glaubensverluste. Ein Essay über Caspar David Friedrich stellt keinerlei Ausgleich für eine zerstörte Landschaft dar. Die Überzeugung, jeder Verlust oder Schaden finde seine Kompensation, stützt sich vermutlich auf den religiösen Glauben an Vergebung oder auf die philosophischen Argumente für die Theodizee. Die Schlussfolgerung lautet: Die Geisteswissenschaften sollten nicht durch Argumente der Nützlichkeit gerechtfertigt werden. Sie sind „nützlich“, weil sie überhaupt nicht nützlich sein müssen. Le modèle de la « démocratie délibérative », tel que l’avait developpé Jürgen Habermas exige qu’y soient réunis les modèles de la démocratie libérale et républicaine, sans inclure en même temps les défauts de ces deux types de démocratie. Cette synthèse des types de démocratie s’est montrée défectueuse. D’un côté, elle n’est pas réussie parce que Habermas fait la caricature de la démocratie républicaine qui n’inclut point les éléments essentiels de ce type de démocratie. De l’autre côté, elle peut être (...) vouée à l’échec parce que Habermas idéalise trop la démocratie délibérative. Ces idéalisations excessives sont le résultat surtout d’une augmentation d’expectatives des discours démocratiques et d’une sous-estimation – même dans les démocraties délibératives – du besoin d’agir qui y est présent. Već u ekonomskom pogledu, oglednom primjeru globalizacije, može se pokazati da svijet nije samo jedan, nego se sastoji od mnogo svjetova . U jednakoj mjeri to važi i za političku filozofiju koja spekulira o svjetskoj republici ili čak svjetskoj državi. Uz to, ovdje se moralnofilozofijski argumentira u prilog tezi da je moderni svojstven ne samo univerzalni moral, nego i jedna (...) etika koja reflektira običajnost. (shrink)

Joachim Ritter, ainsi que d’autres auteurs, ont tenté de justifier les sciences humaines à l’aide de la théorie de la « compensation ». Selon lui, les lettres compensent les pertes et les risques engendrés par la progression de la modernisation. La théorie de la compensation semble offrir une justification aux lettres par rapport à la dynamique du monde moderne. Ce qui prima facie paraît intéressant dans une époque où le triomphe des sciences naturelles et de la technologie est manifeste, alors (...) que les sciences humaines doivent défendre leur position. L’article examine quatre critiques à l’égard de la théorie de la compensation : cette théorie est marquée par une approche obsolète de l’histoire ; elle ne tient compte que de la fonction conservatrice des sciences humaines ; elle dégrade ces dernières en les considérant comme annexes aux changements culturels ; enfin, elle surévalue la capacité des sciences humaines à constituer un contrepoids aux pertes et aux risques engendrés par la modernisation. Disserter sur l’histoire de l’église ne compense pas la perte actuelle de la foi. Un essai sur Caspar David Friedrich ne représente pas une compensation pour un paysage ruiné. La croyance que pour chaque perte ou chaque dommage existe une compensation est probablement liée à la croyance religieuse dans le pardon ou aux arguments philosophiques en matière de théodicée. La conclusion est que les lettres ne doivent pas se justifier par des arguments utilitaires. Elles sont « utiles » car elles n’ont pas à être utiles du tout. (shrink)

Même d’un point de vue économique, typique de la mondialisation, il est possible de montrer que le monde n’est pas unique, mais se compose de mondes multiples . Ceci est valable dans la même mesure pour les philosophies politiques qui spéculent sur une république mondiale voire un État mondial. De plus, on (...) argumente d’un point de vue philosophicomoral en faveur de la thèse suivante : que le modernisme est caractérisé non seulement par une morale universelle mais aussi par une éthique reflétant les coutumes. Hope is a central concept in nursing and other fields of health care. However, there is no consensus about the concept of hope. We argue that seeking consensus is futile given the multifaceted and multidimensional nature of the concept, but instead we encourage in‐depth studies of the assumptions behind talk about hope in specific contexts. Our approach to the ‘science of hope’ is inspired by philosophical pragmatism. We argue that hope is a concept that opens different rooms for action in (...) different contexts and that accordingly, all hope interventions are contextually sensitive. Careful attention to how the relative positions and power of nurses and patients influence what can be inferred from their different ways of talking about hope may make hopeful conversations more meaningful in health care relationships. For the sake of explaining the merits of a Leśniewski type nominalism, it should be made clear what is meant by „nominalism” and what the characteristics of this special type of nominalism are. To the first question we can find quite a lot of mutually inconsistent answers. Therefore I will just explain the distinction between two different nominalistic traditions which I hold to be fundamental. I think we should not just focus on the question which so-called abstract entities are rejected (...) but as well look for basic entities nominalists rely on. (shrink)

Jh. ist wesentlich durch das Konzept der Konsensökumene geprägt worden; nach der Jahrtausendwende ist jedoch verstärkt von einer Ökumene der Profile die Rede. Der vorliegende Aufsatz fragt daher, was Konsens »nach« der Konsensökumene, d.h. sowohl in zeitlichem als auch inhaltlichem Anschluss an die Konsensökumene bedeutet . Zu diesem Zweck wird mit der Charta Oecumenica eines der kennzeichnendsten Dokumente der ökumenehermeneutischen Wende eingehend analysiert , woraus sich fünf unterschiedliche Bedeutungen des Begriffs Konsens ergeben .SUMMARYIn the 20th century, (...) ecumenical encounter has been dominated by the hermeneutics of consensus. However, after the turn of the millennium a change seems to have taken place in that the churches seem to prefer to stress their own unmistakable profile. What then does consensus mean after the hermeneutics of consensus ? In order to answer this question, the present essay analyses in detail the Charta Oecumenica , which is one of the most characteristic examples of the above-mentioned change , and comes up with five different meanings of the term consensus. This paper is based on the author's presentation at the Church Renewal Consultations of the Community of Protestant Churches in Europe (CPCE) in 2009. It suggests three preliminary hermeneutical steps on the way to a Protestant ecclesiology in touch with the latest renewal processes in the churches. The first step is to focus the Protestant church concept on the Reformers' notion of discovering the hidden nature of the church within its worldly situation. The second step goes beyond the dogmatic fundamentals (...) of the church by exploring different contexts (ethical, ecumenical etc.) in which that hidden church can be discovered. The third step is to consider worship as the heart of the church's life and at the same time as its most obvious contribution to life in public – a good starting-point for church renewal. (shrink)
