Ratio Est Fides: Contemporary Philosophy as Virtuous Thought.Erik Meganck - 2016 - International Journal of Philosophy and Theology 77 (3):154-170.
ABSTRACTUnquestionably, philosophy has acquired a somewhat new register lately. First, I discuss the appearance of the theological virtues in contemporary philosophy. This appearance is heralded in Nietzsche’s famous preface to The Gay Science. The event remains at this point curious and without explanation. In a second step, I explore current French philosophy and culture as the frame and/or the effect of this appearance. At this point, I still cannot find the philosophical meaning of the virtues, only the condition of possibility (...)

Heidegger and Latour on the Danger Hiding in Actuality.Erik Meganck - 2022 - Human Studies 45 (1):47-63.
In The question concerning technology, Heidegger explores actuality in terms of danger. In chapter 3.6 ‘Who has forgotten Being?’ of his We have never been modern, Latour typically ridicules Heidegger and rejects no less than his whole thinking path. I contend that this criticism stems from an inadequate interpretation of Heidegger. By reading the latter in a modern register, Latour turns Heidegger into a modern thinker. Leaving aside the matter of modern elements in Heidegger’s thoughts, these are certainly not the (...)

‘Nulla in Mundo Pax Sincera …’ Secularisation and Violence in Vattimo and Girard.Erik8 Meganck - 2013 - International Journal of Philosophy and Theology 74 (5):410-431.
Vattimo holds nihilist secularisation to be the ultimate meaning of Christianity. It diagnoses actuality as the dissolution of transcendence that is always violent, be it metaphysical or religious. This is an extrapolation of Girard’s desacralisation, proposing Christianity to be the dissolution of sacred violence. To Girard, secularisation is the modern interpretation of desacralisation. Both Vattimo and Girard agree that secularisation is inherent to Christianity; that the ultimate meaning of Christianity is love; that hitherto this message has not reached the ‘masses’. (...)

God Returns as Nihilist Caritas: Secularization According to Gianni Vattimo.Erik Meganck - 2015 - Sophia 54 (3):363-379.
Gianni Vattimo refers his weak interpretation of metaphysics to its Christian provenance. He argues that his nihilist secularization theory divulges the full and ultimate meaning of Christianity. This model understands Christianity as God who ‘returns,’ not as an eternal substance but as one who in his return reveals himself as becoming the current nihilist hermeneutic flux that is reality. Vattimo takes kenosis as the model of the destiny of ontology. God takes a distance from the eternal origin and lets go (...)

Philosophia Amica Theologiae: Gianni Vattimo's ‘Weak Faith’ and Theological Difference.Erik Meganck - 2015 - Modern Theology 31 (3):377-402.
Vattimo’s ‘weak thought’ leads him from philosophy straight into the theological field. It claims to have no other option, as it inevitably lays bare its own Christian provenance. Vattimo’s exploration of this provenance shows ‘weak faith’ to be the only possible way to live an authentic late-modern Christianity. I shall contend that, despite the intriguing perspectives and provoking challenges of Vattimo’s writings, the nihilist erasure of the difference between thought and faith, what I call epistemo-theology, is not the best late-modern (...)

    Modern Violence: Heavenly or Worldly—Or Else?Erik Meganck - 2020 - Human Studies 43 (2):291-309.
Violence is often considered through its causes or effects, but seldom by its source. As to that, opinion is also divided. Some say that human culture is the source of violence and that love and peace can only come from ‘outside’; others claim that precisely this ‘outside’ is the source of violence and that love can only blossom in a society that cancels all arbitrary reference to any ‘outside’. These positions are articulated by, respectively, René Girard and Gianni Vattimo. This (...)

    Desecularisation: Thinking Secularisation Beyond Metaphysics.Erik Meganck - 2021 - Angelaki 26 (3-4):178-194.
Theologians and philosophers remain rather indecisive about the notion of desecularisation. I suggest that desecularisation should be considered relevant insofar as it interacts with other notions belonging to contemporary thought, namely: radical secularisation, desacralisation, deconstruction, and dis-enclosure. I argue that desecularisation can be understood as belonging to the same movement as the one marked by deconstruction and dis-enclosure. Staging this interaction will yield the following: the necessity of secularising secularisation itself, the importance of differentiating between secularisation and desacralisation, the rightful (...)
