Reference and computation: an essay in applied philosophy of language.Amichai Kronfeld - 1990 - New York: Cambridge University Press.
This book deals with a major problem in the study of language: the problem of reference. The ease with which we refer to things in conversation is deceptive. Upon closer scrutiny, it turns out that we hardly ever tell each other explicitly what object we mean, although we expect our interlocutor to discern it. Amichai Kronfeld provides an answer to two questions associated with this: how do we successfully refer, and how can a computer be programmed to achieve this? (...)

The Importance of Orienting Attitudes in the Perception of the Hering and Zollner Illusions.Rebecca L. Silberman & Douglas A. Bors - 1993 - Journal of Phenomenological Psychology 24 (2):161-174.
By analyzing descriptions of illusory and nonillusory figures, Richer called into question the common assumption that illusory and nonillusory perceptions were experientially the same and differed only in terms of their accuracy. The present study attempted to replicate Richer's work with a focus on identifying within the subjects' descriptions any orienting attitudes corresponding to these two forms of perception. Nineteen student volunteers were asked to describe two illusory figures and a nonillusory control of similar complexity. The descriptions revealed consistent differences (...)

Cuteness in avatar design: a cross-cultural study on the influence of baby schema features and other visual characteristics.Shiri Lieber-Milo, Yair Amichai-Hamburger, Tomoko Yonezawa & Kazunori Sugiura - forthcoming - AI and Society:1-11.
The concept of cuteness, which can evoke positive emotions in people, is an essential aspect to consider in artificial intelligence design. This study aimed to investigate whether the use of baby schema designed avatars in computer-mediated communication elicits higher positive attitudes than neutral avatars and whether the ethnicity of the cute avatars influences individuals' perceived level of cuteness. 485 participants from Israel and Japan viewed six avatar images, including three baby schema avatars of different visual characteristics and ethnicities (Caucasian, Asian, (...)

Semantic Boost on Episodic Associations: An Empirically‐Based Computational Model.Yaron Silberman, Shlomo Bentin & Risto Miikkulainen - 2007 - Cognitive Science 31 (4):645-671.
Words become associated following repeated co-occurrence episodes. This process might be further determined by the semantic characteristics of the words. The present study focused on how semantic and episodic factors interact in incidental formation of word associations. First, we found that human participants associate semantically related words more easily than unrelated words; this advantage increased linearly with repeated co-occurrence. Second, we developed a computational model, SEMANT, suggesting a possible mechanism for this semantic-episodic interaction. In SEMANT, episodic associations are implemented through (...)

The Rule of Justice: The Compassionate Application of Law to Life.Rosalie Silberman Abella - 2023 - Canadian Journal of Law and Jurisprudence 36 (2):305-315.
I graduated from law school in 1970 and I’ve been proud every day since of being a lawyer. My father was a lawyer, as are our two sons, and I’ve always seen lawyers as democracy’s warriors: the people who protect rights and by protecting rights protect justice. You law students are the future democracy warriors—actually, the future of democracy full stop—so this lecture is dedicated to you and to the hope that you will make justice your transcendent preoccupation, no matter (...)

Minnesota in Our Time: A Photographic Portrait.George Slade - 2000 - Minnesota Historical Society Press.
In 120 exquisitely reproduced black-and-white images, Minnesota in Our Time: A Photographic Portrait showcases the work of twelve talented photographers who sought to capture the essence of the state and its people at the threshold of the new millennium. Like the Farm Security Administration photographers of the Depression era, these men and women document the details of life in this time and the transformations now taking place in this state. This work is a product of the MINNESOTA 2000 Photo Documentation (...)
