Common Sense Principles of Contract Interpretation (and how we've been using them all along).Adam Kramer - 2003 - Oxford Journal of Legal Studies 23 (2):173-196.
This article proposes to take seriously Lord Hoffmann's influential restatement of the rules of contractual interpretation. Consequently, it seeks to investigate the ‘common sense principles by which any serious utterance would be interpreted in ordinary life’, with the aid of theoretical insights from psycholinguistics, pragmatics and the philosophy of language. Such an investigation provides a principled explanation for some of the key features of our legal rules of interpretation, such as the objective principle and the importance of the factual matrix (...)

Defending Biomedical Authority and Regulating the Womb as Social Space: Prenatal Testing in the Polish Press.Anne-Marie Kramer - 2010 - European Journal of Women's Studies 17 (1):43-59.
The issue of abortion has been the topic of heated and frequent debate in post-Communist Poland. Parliamentary debate in 1998—9 centred around a legislative attempt to restrict prenatal testing, specifically amniocentesis, in order to further reduce the numbers of abortions carried out, as it was argued to inevitably result in the termination of pregnancy. Medical professionals are rarely visible as subjects of and authorities on the abortion debate in the Polish context. However, in this debate around prenatal testing, the medical (...)

Oculomotor capture by abrupt onsets reveals concurrent programming of voluntary and involuntary saccades.Arthur F. Kramer, David E. Irwin, Jan Theeuwes & Sowon Hahn - 1999 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 22 (4):689-690.
In several recent experiments we have found that the eyes are often captured by the appearance of a sudden onset in a display, even though subjects intend to move their eyes elsewhere. Very brief fixations are made on the abrupt onset before the eyes complete their intended movement to the previously defined target. These results indicate concurrent programming of a voluntary saccade to the defined saccade target and an involuntary saccade to the sudden onset. This is inconsistent with the idea (...)

Can a Theater Acting Intervention Enhance Inhibitory Control in Older Adults? A Brain-Behavior Investigation.Aishwarya Rajesh, Tony Noice, Helga Noice, Andrew Jahn, Ana M. Daugherty, Wendy Heller & Arthur F. Kramer - 2021 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 15.
Purpose: Studies of reactive and proactive modes of inhibitory control tend to show age-related declines and are accompanied by abnormalities in the prefrontal cortex. We explored which mode of inhibitory control would be more amenable to change and accrue greater benefits following engagement in a 4-week theater acting intervention in older adults. These gains were evaluated by performance on the AX-CPT task. We hypothesized that an increase in proactive control would relate to an increase in AY errors and a decrease (...)
