    Claudel. [REVIEW]J. S. A. - 1958 - Review of Metaphysics 11 (4):691-691.
Fowlie portrays Claudel as a versatile spirit, synthesizing his interests in politics and art in his religious concern. Especially interesting are the remarks on Claudel's theories of art, in which the religious poet particularly functions as the interpreter of a deeper imaginative self. Fowlie's criticism of the poems and plays throws welcome light on works whose meaning is not easily made luminous.--A. J. S.

    Rimbaud. [REVIEW]J. S. A. - 1958 - Review of Metaphysics 11 (4):692-692.
The major periods of Rimbaud's life are seen as parts of a whole, united by the theme of a necessary and hopeless struggle for an impossible adequacy--as man, as poet, as trader. Hackett effectively presents the case that Rimbaud is the greatest French poet after Baudelaire.--A. J. S.

This book is composed of seven essays on diverse ethical themes. C. H. Hamburg's essay on the task of the contemporary psychoanalyst in giving criteria for judging psychic health, Louise Roberts' discussion of "better" as a primitive ethical term, and R. C. Whittmore's "Does the Neo-intuitionist theory of obligation rest on a mistake?" are the most valuable.--A. J. S.

The Collected Papers of William Burnside 2 Volume Set.Peter M. Neumann, A. J. S. Mann & Julia Tompson (eds.) - 2003 - Oxford University Press UK.
William Burnside was one of the three most important algebraists who were involved in the transformation of group theory from its nineteenth-century origins to a deeper twentieth-century subject. Building on work of earlier mathematicians, they were able to develop sophisticated tools for solving difficult problems. His works are of enormous historical importance; they remain also a source of inspiration and information. The works of his contemporaries, such as Klein, Frobenius, Schur, have been published as also have the works of his (...)

    The Place of Protagoras in Athenian Public Life (460–415 B.C.).J. S. Morrison - 1941 - Classical Quarterly 35 (1-2):1-.
Protagoras, of all the ancient philosophers, has perhaps attracted the most interest in modern times. His saying ‘Man is the measure of all things’ caused Schiller to adopt him as the patron of the Oxford pragmatists, and has generally earned him the title of the first humanist. Yet the exact delineation of his philosophcal position remains a baffling task. Neumann, writing on Die Problematik des ‘Homo-mensura’ Satzes in 1938,2 concludes that no certainty whatever can be reached on the meaning of (...)

When people engage in conversation, they tailor their utterances to their conversational partners, whether these partners are other humans or computational systems. This tailoring, or adaptation to the partner takes place in all facets of human language use, and is based on a mental model or a user model of the conversational partner. Such adaptation has been shown to improve listeners' comprehension, their satisfaction with an interactive system, the efficiency with which they execute conversational tasks, and the likelihood of achieving (...)

    Contesting the science/ethics distinction in the review of clinical research.A. J. Dawson & S. M. Yentis - 2007 - Journal of Medical Ethics 33 (3):165-167.
Recent policy in relation to clinical research proposals in the UK has distinguished between two types of review: scientific and ethical. This distinction has been formally enshrined in the recent changes to research ethics committee structure and operating procedures, introduced as the UK response to the EU Directive on clinical trials. Recent reviews and recommendations have confirmed the place of the distinction and the separate review processes. However, serious reservations can be mounted about the science/ethics distinction and the policy of (...)

In a modern democratic society appearance has great importance. This is especially true of the dress code in health care sphere. More recently, changing your appearance by getting tattoos and body modifications has been decried by different generations in the medical community. However, what is significance of appearance of a medical officer during epidemiological instability around the world? The response to this question was given in our study. The objectives of the study are: to interrogate the attitude of medical university (...)

  45. Against Virtue Parsimony: Markets, Good Intentions, and Political Life.A. J. Walsh - unknown
We inhabit a world in which the market is a dominant institutional form of social organization. This influence is not without its critics, and there is considerable debate amongst political philosophers and policy-makers about whether the range of the market should expand or contract and, further, about the extent to which the market should be subject to constraints and government regulation. The expansion of the market into realms hitherto unknown is the theme of a number of recent books, including Michael (...)

    The logic of recursive equations.A. J. C. Hurkens, Monica McArthur, Yiannis N. Moschovakis, Lawrence S. Moss & Glen T. Whitney - 1998 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 63 (2):451-478.
We study logical systems for reasoning about equations involving recursive definitions. In particular, we are interested in "propositional" fragments of the functional language of recursion FLR [18, 17], i.e., without the value passing or abstraction allowed in FLR. The "pure," propositional fragment FLR 0 turns out to coincide with the iteration theories of [1]. Our main focus here concerns the sharp contrast between the simple class of valid identities and the very complex consequence relation over several natural classes of models.

Summary This paper presents an analysis and discussion of the opinions of two generations of Asian parents with regard to their young children's education. A large number of parents (n = 200) were interviewed during 1970-1974 and a smaller number (n = 40) during 1995 to ascertain their views on a variety of topics relating to their children's early education. The findings are discussed in a qualitative way and reveal the increasing satisfaction of Asian parents with their children's education. A (...)
