Thinking in, with, across, and beyond cases with John Forrester.Chris Millard & Felicity Callard - 2020 - History of the Human Sciences 33 (3-4):3-14.
We consider the influence that John Forrester’s work has had on thinking in, with, and from cases in multiple disciplines. Forrester’s essay ‘If p, Then What? Thinking in Cases’ was published in History of the Human Sciences in 1996 and transformed understandings of what a case was, and how case-based thinking worked in numerous human sciences. Forrester’s collection of essays Thinking in Cases was published posthumously, after his untimely death in 2015, and is the inspiration for the special issue we (...)

    Making the cut: The production of 'self-harm' in post-1945 Anglo-Saxon psychiatry.Chris Millard - 2013 - History of the Human Sciences 26 (2):126-150.
‘Deliberate self-harm’, ‘self-mutilation’ and ‘self-injury’ are just some of the terms used to describe one of the most prominent issues in British mental health policy in recent years. This article demonstrates that contemporary literature on ‘self-harm’ produces this phenomenon (to varying extents) around two key characteristics. First, this behaviour is predominantly performed by those identified as female. Second, this behaviour primarily involves cutting the skin. These constitutive characteristics are traced back to a corpus of literature produced in the 1960s and (...)

Is geriatrics the answer to the problem of old age? : I Thoughts of a geriatrician.P. H. Millard - 1976 - Journal of Medical Ethics 2 (4):193-195.
Two doctors attempt to answer this question, one a specialist in geriatric medicine, the other a psychiatrist interested in the psychiatric problems of the elderly and the old. Both, however, come to the same general conclusion: attitudes of the doctors themselves and of society must be changed. These attitudes can determine not only whether an old person lives or dies but how he lives. Old people should not have to survive in mentally suspended animation with all objectives gone but should (...)

  18. La hiérarchie des normes. Une critique sur un fondement empiriste.Eric Millard - 2013 - Revus 21:163-199.

Mesenchymal stem cells for systemic therapy: shotgun approach or magic bullets?Susan M. Millard & Nicholas M. Fisk - 2013 - Bioessays 35 (3):173-182.
Given their heterogeneity and lack of defining markers, it is surprising that multipotent mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) have attracted so much translational attention, especially as increasing evidence points to their predominant effect being not by donor differentiation but via paracrine mediators and exosomes. Achieving long-term MSC donor chimerism for treatment of chronic disease remains a challenge, requiring enhanced MSC homing/engraftment properties and manipulation of niches to direct MSC behaviour. Meanwhile advances in nanoparticle technology are furthering the development of MSCs as (...)

Gender in the Secondary Curriculum: Balancing the Books.Ann Clark & Elaine Millard - 1998 - Psychology Press.
The 'gender gap' in schooling, as manifested by the current disparity in boys' and girls' achievement at GCSE, continues to create problems for teachers. In this volume a team of contributors considers the gender issues particular to a range of subjects in the secondary curriculum. They discuss effective strategies - supported by their research and practice - and offer some ways forward for teachers.

    Les nouveaux territoires du droit.Sonia Leverd (ed.) - 2013 - Paris: L'Harmattan.

In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:Euthanasia in Utopian LiteratureLyman Tower Sargent (bio)The word euthanasia, meaning a peaceful, gentle, or easy death, has been traced back to Roman times. But the "good" in a good death is obviously open to interpretation. Good for whom? The individual? The family of the individual? The society? And, who decides? The individual? The doctor? The family of the individual? The legal system? These questions are constantly raised throughout the (...)

    A History of Indian Philosophy.A. C. Bouquet - 1922 - Cambridge University Press.
In this benchmark five-volume study, originally published between 1922 and 1955, Surendranath Dasgupta examines the principal schools of thought that define Indian philosophy. A unifying force greater than art, literature, religion, or science, Professor Dasgupta describes philosophy as the most important achievement of Indian thought, arguing that an understanding of its history is necessary to appreciate the significance and potentialities of India's complex culture. Volume I offers an examination of the Vedas and the Brahmanas, the earlier Upanisads, and the six (...)

The point of formalisation is to model various aspects of natural language. Perhaps the main use to which formalisation is put is to model and explain inferential relations between different sentences. Judged solely by this objective, a formalisation is successful in modelling the inferential network of natural language sentences to the extent that it mirrors this network. There is surprisingly little literature on the criteria of good formalisation, and even less on the question of what it is for a formalisation (...)

Ideals of patient autonomy in clinical decision making: a study on the development of a scale to assess patients' and physicians' views.A. M. Stiggelbout - 2004 - Journal of Medical Ethics 30 (3):268-274.
Objectives: Evidence based patient choice seems based on a strong liberal individualist interpretation of patient autonomy; however, not all patients are in favour of such an interpretation. The authors wished to assess whether ideals of autonomy in clinical practice are more in accordance with alternative concepts of autonomy from the ethics literature. This paper describes the development of a questionnaire to assess such concepts of autonomy. Methods: A questionnaire, based on six moral concepts from the ethics literature, was sent to aneurysm (...)

    The very idea of a social science.A. R. Louch - 1963 - Inquiry: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Philosophy 6 (1-4):273 – 286.
In The Idea of a Social Science Winch, argues that, sociology is more properly conceived as a branch of philosophy than of empirical science. Winch falls victim here to the Humean assimilation of the empirical to the generalizable. He notes that much of our talk about social practice is in terms of conventions, so that explanations of social action can be given without recourse to statistical or experimental findings. But such talk depends nonetheless on the accuracy and detail with which (...)
