Beltrami's first allegedly true interpretation of lobachevsky's geometry can be conceived as (i) pursuing a kantian program insofar as it shows that all the geometrical lobachevskian concepts are constructible in the euclidean space of our human representation, And (ii) proving, Even to kant, That a non-Euclidean geometry is not only logically possible (something that kant never denied) but also mathematically acceptable from a kantian point of view (something that kant would have accepted only after beltrami's interpretation).

The main claim of this study is that, contrary to Latour’s view about the need to leave aside epistemology to deal with anything valuable about science, Mario Bunge has consistently built up a detailed and thorough epistemology. The argumentative strategy will be to show that (a) it is not true that we have never been modern (b) epistemology is here to stay, and (c) Mario Bunge endorses a strong scientific realism, a brand of materialism, systemism and emergentism, including a moral (...) dimension (there are objective values like, truth, peace and justice that deserve to be respected). Cette étude défend l’idée que, contrairement à l’opinion de Latour sur la nécessité de laisser de côté l’épistémologie pour traiter de tout ce qui a de la valeur pour la science, Mario Bunge a systématiquement construit une épistémologie détaillée et approfondie. La stratégie argumentative consistera à montrer (a) qu’il est faux que nous n’avons jamais été modernes (b) que l’épistémologie est là pour de bon et (c) que Mario Bunge soutient un réalisme scientifique fort, une version du matérialisme, du systémisme (...) et de l’émergentisme, comportant une dimension morale (il existe des valeurs objectives comme la vérité, la paix et la justice qui méritent d’être étudiées). Ensuite, le réalisme de Bunge rejette la neutralité axiologique rendant les scientifiques responsables de leurs actions. Bunge a toujours été moderne et continue à enrichir ses propres positions. Es así que, en este trabajo, por una parte reconstruiré los argumentos que Aristóteles da para sostener dicho sistema, (...) y por otra, analizaré la vigencia de tales argumentos. La hipótesis que manejaré, es que si se suponen verdaderos los requisitos que Aristóteles prescribió para el conocimiento científico se arriba a conclusiones que en la mayoría de los casos están en pugna con las tesis centrales de la metodología y de las ciencias contemporáneas. Aristotle considered all science as a system S of statements that answer to various canons, for example, those that refer to a particular type or class of objects, those which are true, those which refer to their logical consequences, those which are accepted without definition, and those that are accepted without demonstration. Thus, in this work, on the one hand I will reconstruct the arguments Aristotle gives to support this system, and on the other, I will analyze the validity of such arguments. The hypothesis that I will handle is that if the requisites that Aristotle prescribes for scientific knowledge are assumed to be true, then conclusions are reached that in most cases are in conflict with the central theses of the methodology and contemporary sciences. La polémica Mach-Planck acerca del estado cognitivo de las teorías científicas nos permite llegar a las siguientes conclusiones. No siempre el que defendió las posturas luego asentadas científicamente desarrolló los mejores argumentos en la polémica. Por ejemplo, Planck malinterpretó las tesis de Mach acerca de la imagen científica, sus conceptos y leyes. La postura de ambos estaba fundada en distintas filosofías y, por ende, en distintos sistemas de valores y en modos diferentes de priorizarlos. Hay una relatividad temporal de un (...) aparente vencedor por sobre otro que se invierte en otro momento del desarrollo histórico de la física. No hay algoritmo o argumento definitivo alguno para declarar vencedora a ninguna de las posturas. Dicotomías filosóficas como realismo-instrumentalismo son insuficientes para captar la complejidad de las posturas epistemológicas y ontológicas de los científicos. Finalmente, la polémica enfatiza el rol decisivo de la dimensión filosófica en cuestiones teóricas de la física. The Mach-Planck controversy about the cognitive status of scientific theories lead us to the following conclusions. Not always the one who maintains some theses that look better is the one who advanced the best arguments for criticizing his opponent. Their views were grounded in different philosophies, and consequently, in different valuesystems. There was no absolute winner-loser; each one might look like a winnerloser depending upon de historical and scientific context relative to which the choice is being made. There is no algorithm and definitive argument for declaring a final winner-loser. Standard philosophical dichotomies like realism vs. instrumentalism are insufficient for grasping the complexity of the epistemological and ontological positions of scientists. Finally, the controversy emphasizes the decisive role played by philosophy in the theoretical issues of physics. (shrink)

Resumen. El presente estudio de caso expone, a partir de la historia de vida como fuente de información, un abordaje de la vida cotidiana más allá de lo meramente narrativo y periodístico. La investigación toma como objeto de estudio los cambios ocurridos en las costumbres y los hábitos de comportamiento cotidiano de una inmigrante española en la colonia agrícola de Turén en Venezuela a mediados del siglo pasado. Se considera que los procesos migratorios, máxime si se enmarcan dentro de un (...) proyecto colonizador, resultan propicios para detectar las variaciones en los mun-dos vitales de las personas, en ese proceso obligado al que se enfrenta el emigrante de ajustarse a las condiciones de un medio ambiente nuevo, extraño y a veces per-cibido como hostil. La información se recoge a través de los recuerdos que tiene la emigrante, suministrados en entrevistas abiertas. Las experiencias de la vida cotidiana en el pueblo español donde vivía la emigrante se comparan con las de la colonia agrícola venezolana a la que fue a vivir, a la luz de aportes teóricos provenien-tes del campo de la antropología. Se concluye que el enfoque etnohistórico de los hechos puede contribuir a explicar el análisis histórico de los mismos, dando una visión alternativa pero complementaria y enriquecedora a las metodologías tradi-cionales para el estudio del pasado. The essay exposes a study of the daily life, trying to overcome the normal, journalis-tic narrative explanations, offering instead an approach based on the history of life-time. The research takes as object of study the expected changes occurred in the personal manners and daily habits of a Spanish immigrant in the agricultural colony of Turen in Venezuela, during the middle of the past century. Migration processes, especially if happen as part of colonization projects, offer a good opportunity to detect relevant changes in the inner lives of people, due to the efforts of the immi-grant to deal with the adaptation to a new, different and sometimes hostile environ-ment. Information is obtained through the remembrances of the immigrant during open interviews. Personal remembrances about her daily life in the small Spanish town where she lived before migration are compared with those other ones in the Venezuelan agricultural colony where she arrived. These comparisons are analysed based on contributions coming from the anthropology field. As a conclusion, etno-history approach is recommended for the study of the past in order to enrich tradi-tional methodologies used by historians, as a complementary approach. Popper has claimed that physical indeterminism is a necessary though not a sufficient condition for the possibility of the free will. However, I want to show that his arguments for supporting that view are, to say the least, plainly inconclusive, and outstanding quantum physicists like Bohr, Born and Schrödinger have given different reasons for claiming, contrary to popper, that physical indeterminism is neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition for the possibility of the free will.

La historia oficial del neopositivismo, en particular respecto de las propuestas de R. Carnap acerca de la aceptación-rechazo de teorías, sostiene que “Carnap [pretendió] evitar la idea […] de que en la actividad de seleccionar teorías se presuponen valores […] quería reducir la elección de teorías a un algoritmo” . Dicha historia es la que usualmente aparece en los libros de texto sobre el positivismo y/o sobre la historia de la filosofía de las ciencias, así como en aproximaciones críticas al (...) empirismo, en general, y a Carnap en particular. En el presente trabajo argumentaremos que Carnap explícitamente no llevó a cabo tal reducción y no pretendió evadir la presencia de juicios de valor, aunque de un tipo muy especial. (shrink)

El objetivo principal del artículo consiste en analizar las implicancias de la categoría “Estado total” en el pensamiento de Carl Schmitt. La hipótesis de lectura esgrimida sostiene que dicho término pone de manifiesto que el propio concepto de lo político implica un grado de despolitización de la sociedad que afirma al Estado y a su capacidad de neutralizar los conflictos de la unidad política. En este sentido, en el trabajo se muestra que la totalización schmittiana no puede ser entendida de (...) forma unívoca ―ni asociada rápidamente al totalitarismo― por lo que resulta crucial dar cuenta del trasfondo histórico de sus distintas obras a partir de la utilización del método exegético-hermenéutico. Finalmente, como conclusión, se indica el uso dual por parte del autor del concepto Estado total poniéndose de manifiesto la diferencia entre un tipo de totalización positiva a manos de un Estado fuerte y un tipo de totalización perniciosa a cargo de las organizaciones sociales.AbstractThe article analyzes the concept of “Total State” in the Schmittian thought. The hypothesis is that this category should relate to the conceptualization of the author on politics. The own concept of the political implies a degree of politicization of society that reaffirms the state and its ability to neutralize conflicts of political unity. On the other hand, Schmitt’s notion of the total cannot be understood unambiguously ―nor associated rapidly with totalitarianism― for which it becomes crucial to account for the historical background of his respective works by the utilization of the hermeneutical and exegetical method. Finally the conclusion indicates the difference between a kind of positive totalization at the hands of a strong State and a sort of pernicious totalization at the hands of social organizations. Resúmen: Este trabajo se propone mostrar la articulación y la marcha argumentativa de lo que en general se ha reconstruido como el "argumento con el lenguaje privado". Comienza mostrando el análisis que Wittgenstein hace de los dos errores básicos que estarían en la base de la creencia en la posibilidad de un lenguaje privado: que las palabras adquieren significado por ostención y que la experiencia humana es esencialmente privada. A partir de allí muchas de las concepciones clásicas sobre la experiencia, (...) la certeza, la duda y la naturaleza del conocimiento comienzan a alterarse. Algunos de los problemas centrales de la filosofia del conocimiento parecen desmontarse.: This paper aims to show the stucture and the argumentation track of what is generally reconstrued as the "argument against a private language". Firstly, it presents the analysis made by Wittgenstein about two errors to be found supporting the belive in the possibility of a private language, namely, that the words get their meaning trough ostension, and that human experience is essentially private. Therefrom, much of the classic believes about experience, certainty, doubt, and the nature of knowledge began to change. We argue for an account of chemical reactivities as chancy propensities, in accordance with the ‘complex nexus of chance’ defended by one of us in the past (Suárez, 2017, 2020). Reactivities are typically quantified as proportions, and an expression such as “A + B → C” does not entail that under the right conditions some amounts of A and B react to give the amount of C that theoretically would correspond to the stoichiometry of the reaction. Instead, what is produced (...) is a fraction α < 1 of this theoretical amount, and the corresponding percentage is usually known as the yield, which expresses the relative preponderance of its reaction. This is then routinely tested in a laboratory against the observed actual yields for the different reactions. Thus, on our account, reactivities ambiguously refer to three quantities at once. They first refer to the underlying propensities effectively acting in the reaction mechanisms, and which in ‘chemical chemistry’ (Schummer, 1998) are commonly represented by means of Lewis structures. Besides, reactivities represent the probabilities that these propensities give rise to, for any amount of the reactants to combine as prescribed. This last notion is hence best understood as a single case chance and corresponds to a theoretical stoichiometric yield. Finally, reactivities represent the actual yields observed in experimental runs, which account for and provide the requisite evidence for / against both the mechanisms and single case chances ascribed. In this paper we present a semantic analysis of the application of didactic constructivism to chemical education. We show that the psychological basis of constructivism yield, when applied to chemistry, an internalist semantics for the chemical names. Since these names have been presented as typical examples of an externalism for kind terms, a fundamental incompatibility ensues. We study this situation, to conclude that it affects chemical education at every level. Finally, we present a preliminary analysis of this problem from the (...) point of view of physics. (shrink)

As stated by previous researchers, in an increasingly competitive environment, organizations need to develop successful innovations to compete and survive in the long term. Furthermore, sustainability and social issues are gaining increasing importance, to the extent that they are now a matter of high concern for firms and for society. Therefore, organizations cannot improve their results at any price and must be responsible for the consequences of their activities, including innovation. In these conditions, a growing demand for new leadership styles (...) and behaviors arises to face this complex context. Stewardship is a leadership behavior that shows great concern for the impact of the organization’s activity on society. A quantitative study has been conducted with the purpose of providing empirical evidence of the relationship between leaders’ stewardship behavior and innovation success, using radical innovation as an explanatory variable. To confirm the hypotheses, structural equations were used on a dataset from a sample of 300 questionnaires from Spanish companies. The study empirically validates the proposed conceptual model. Results show how radical innovation fully mediates the relationship between leaders’ stewardship behavior and innovation success. (shrink)

Automatic public malware analysis services provide controlled, isolated and virtual environments to analyse malicious software samples. Unfortunately, malware is currently incorporating techniques to recognize execution onto a virtual or sandbox environment; when an analysis environment is detected, malware behaves as a benign application or even shows no activity. In this work, we present an empirical study and characterization of automatic PMAS, considering 26 different services. We also show a set of features that allow to easily fingerprint these services as analysis (...) environments; the lower the unlikeability of these features, the easier for us to fingerprint the analysis service they belong to. Finally, we propose a method for these analysis services to counter or at least mitigate our proposal. (shrink)

Open peer commentary on the article “Constructivist Model Building: Empirical Examples From Mathematics Education” by Catherine Ulrich, Erik S. Tillema, Amy J. Hackenberg & Anderson Norton. Upshot: I argue that radical constructivism poses a series of deep methodological constraints on educational research. We focus on the work of Ulrich et al. to illustrate the practical implications of these constraints.

En este artículo se esboza la relación entre la libertad y la moral política en el pensamiento de Joseph Ratzinger. Para ello, se exponen los fundamentos teológicos y antropológicos que justifican el concepto de libertad y el significado de la política como ámbito de la razón moral. Por último, se propone que un adecuado concepto de libertad, cuyo presupuesto es la verdad, facilita la comprensión y el desarrollo de la actividad política a partir de su naturaleza moral.
