In den »Prolegomena«, von Moses Heß 1841 als der zukunftsträchtige Durchbruch zu einer neuen Epoche des Denkens erkannt und aufgenommen, unternahm der polnische Kosmopolit und Michelet-Schüler Cieszkowski bereits vor Marx den Versuch einer kritischen Aufhebung der Hegelschen Geschichtsphilosophie in die »Philosophische Tat«. Cieszkowskis Forderung, den Standpunkt der bloßen, von Hegel auf ihren Höhepunkt getriebenen begreifenden Reflexion auf die bisherige Geschichte zu verlassen und an die »wirkliche Realisierung der erkannten Wahrheit«, d.h. an die tätige und vernunftgeleitete Gestaltung der »Zukunft« zu (...) gehen, unterscheidet sich allerdings von der Marx' schen Forderung nach der revolutionären Veränderung der Welt. Rüdiger Bubner arbeitet diesen Unterschied in seiner Einleitung systematisch heraus. Jan Garewicz erläutert in seinem Nachwort im Rekurs auf das Gesamtwerk, weshalb Cieszkowski den vom ihm geforderten Umschlag der Theorie in die Praxis nicht als einen Schritt der Abkehr von der Philosophie, sondern als deren Vollendung begriff. August Cieszkowski nie był typowym narodowym mesjanistą czy polskim słowianofilem. Niemniej w zapowiadanej w "Ojcze nasz" trzeciej epoce dziejów wyznaczył Słowianom szczególną, przywódczą rolę, z racji ich licznych zalet, historycznego niespełnienia, atrakcyjnej siły słowiańskiego charakteru i "pochopności do czynu", a także dlatego, że Królestwo Boże na ziemi, w którym nastąpiłoby zwycięstwo dobra nad złem, uetycznienie polityki i "uspołecznienie społeczeństw", wymagało – jego zdaniem – predyspozycji moralno-polityczno-religijnych, posiadanych np. przez Polaków. Przywołał utopijną wizję prahistorycznej Słowiańszczyzny, stworzoną przez miłośników i badaczy (...) Słowian, a z dziejów późniejszych wyeksponował wątek wolnościowo-pokojowo-demokratyczny ze względu na wartości, które uznał za godne urzeczywistnienia w przybliżanej wspólnym trudem wszystkich narodów przyszłości. Stosunek polskiej filozofii katolickiej do Augusta Cieszkowskiego był ambiwalentny. Z jednej strony, uważano go za wybitnego filozofa polskiego, żarliwie religijnego i inspirowanego tradycją chrześcijańską, z drugiej strony, jego myśl budziła liczne zastrzeżenia doktrynalne (ewolucyjna perspektywa religii, możliwość realizacji Królestwa Bożego na ziemi, wątki panteizujące, ograniczanie wolnej woli, uzurpowanie sobie prawa do absolutyzmu poznawczego, jeśli chodzi o "Boże plany", uznanie Boga przed stworzeniem świata za nierozwiniętą jeszcze Możność, "elitarna" koncepcja nieśmiertelności jednostkowej za zasługi). Z dzisiejszej perspektywy filozofia Cieszkowskiego budzi opór ze (...) względu na próbę "totalizacji" rzeczywistości i eksponowanie utopijnego modelu ustroju teokratycznego. (shrink)

Analizując porównawczo poglądy Cieszkowskiego i młodoheglistów, autor zwraca uwagę zarówno na istniejące między nimi podobieństwa, jak i różnice. Mimo wspólnego źródła, którym była krytycznie asymilowana filozofia Hegla, odrębność stanowiska Cieszkowskiego zaznacza się szczególnie, jeśli idzie o filozofię historii oraz stosunek do religii. Jest on mniej radykalny od młodszych uczniów Hegla, w zakresie środków przebudowy społeczeństwa, za to jego wizja tej przebudowy ma charakter globalny, do czego przyczyniła się inspiracja płynąca od francuskich reformatorów społecznych. Jeżeli weźmiemy pod uwagę ideę filozofii czynu (...) i włączenie do schematu historiozoficznego przyszłości, priorytet Cieszkowskiego nie ulega wątpliwości. (shrink)

Autor omawia po raz pierwszy w literaturze przedmiotu działalność współzałożonego przez Cieszkowskiego, w latach 1843-1850, Towarzystwa Filozoficznego w Berlinie. Autor wprowadza nas w tematykę pierwszych posiedzeń Towarzystwa i rolę, jaką w nich odgrywał Cieszkowski.

Autor stawia w centrum rozważań koncepcję historii Cieszkowskiego i Hessa. "Prolegomena…" Cieszkowskiego wywarły silne wrażenie na Hessie. Autor "Heiligen Geschichte" przejął koncepcję filozofii czynu Cieszkowskiego, która nie ograniczała się do spekulacji, lecz przenosiła nas do sfery społecznej praktyki.

August Cieszkowski was a philosopher, economist, social reformer and political activist. As early as 1838 he formulated a daring critique of Hegel, which culminated in the notion of praxis and marked the beginning of the radicalization of the Hegelian school. Throughout the 1840s he participated in the social movement in France with a variety of highly original economic and social schemes. After 1848 he played a key role in Polish politics and elaborated a future-oriented and messianic vision of history (...) that sought to integrate Hegel and Christianity. The publication of this volume in 1979 formed part of a revival of interest in Cieszkowski, which centred about his influence on Marx as well as his impact on Herzen, Hess and Proudhon. It also focused on Cieszkowski's position within the broad current of nineteenth-century Polish and European messianism as well as on the originality of his peculiarly non-revolutionary system. A neglected Young Hegelian, Cieszkowski published prolifically in economics and philosophy, but the work most influential on the Hegelians was his Prolegomena Zur Historiosophie . Rejecting the conservative interpretation of Hegel, it denied that the end of history had been reached, celebrated the will as transcending thought, and anticipated a future in which being and thinking would find their syntheses in praxis. At once a critique of Hegel and a development of Hegelianism, his work is most notable for its (...) millennial optimism. (shrink)

This essay attempts to elaborate a first thorough comparative analysis of August Cieszkowski and Nikolaj Berdjaev. Although the latter is well known as one of the most important Russian philosophers, the former is hardly known beyond the Polish borders. This general lack of recognition contrasts with the fact that Cieszkowski played a significant role in nineteenth century philosophy in Germany, France, Poland and Russia. A comparative analysis of Cieszkowski and Berdjaev will undergird the idea that Cieszkowski (...) was not merely a ‘marginal’ figure in the history of philosophy. This essay has sought the reasons why Berdjaev considered himself to a large extent as a disciple of Cieszkowski. The stress is put on the central aspects of both philosophers’ thinking: freedom, praxis and the way they relate to morality in general. (shrink)

Cieszkowski, podejmując próbę przerzucenia pomostu między spekulatywnym, heglowskim ujęciem historii a historią rzeczywistą, zachował, zdaniem autorki, wśród "młodoheglistów" pozycję myśliciela w pełni oryginalnego i samodzielnego. Sformułowane przez Cieszkowskiego stanowisko, które nakazuje dzieje uznać za "probierz wszelkiej spekulacji" i ujawnić "ogólne i konieczne" prawa dialektyki w "sferze czynu", zapoczątkowało proces, który później w tradycji filozofii niemieckiej doprowadził do rozstania się z myśleniem spekulatywnym. Fazą końcową tego procesu jest stanowisko Marksa, zgodnie z którym filozofia musi zostać zniesiona na rzecz historyczno-ekonomicznych nauk (...) realnych. Autonomiczność pozycji Cieszkowskiego w filozofii, na drodze prowadzącej od Hegla przez Feuerbacha do Marksa, nie może zostać podważona. (shrink)

In the article I presentSolov'ëv's views on the national question(including the so-called Polish question)presented in his writings of the 1880s. Thequestion involved uniting the Churches as wellas Russia's specific mission in building thefuture Kingdom of God. Solov'ëv's position,according to which individual nations acquire aconcrete place in the course of mankind'sexistence, was subjected to criticism by thePolish historian Stanisaw Tarnowski. Thiscontributed to an interesting discussion andpolemic between the two thinkers that tookplace on the pages of the journal PrzegldPolski (The Polish Review).

This is the first major study of Marx and the Young Hegelians in twenty years. The book offers a new interpretation of Marx's early development, the political dimension of Young Hegelianism, and that movement's relationship to political and intellectual currents in early nineteenth-century Germany. Warren Breckman challenges the orthodox distinction drawn between the exclusively religious concerns of Hegelians in the 1830s and the sociopolitical preoccupations of the 1840s. He shows that there are inextricable connections between the theological, political and social (...) discourses of the Hegelians in the 1830s. The book draws together an account of major figures such as Feuerbach and Marx, with discussions of lesser-known but significant figures such as Eduard Gans, August Cieszkowski, Moses Hess, F. W. J. Schelling as well as such movements as French Saint-Simonianism and 'positive philosophy'. De 1815 - avec le Congrès de Vienne qui inaugure une ère de Restauration - à mars 1848, avec les répercussions de la révolution de février en Europe, la période du Vormârz ("avant mars") se caractérise, au sein du monde germanique, par une vie intellectuelle d'une particulière effervescence. Les grandes philosophies qui se sont construites pour dépasser Kant, avec Fichte, Schelling et Hegel, autorisent bon nombre de penseurs allemands à considérer l'Allemagne comme étant philosophiquement en avance sur son temps, ou (...) tout au moins à la pointe de la modernité. Cette avance théorique tranche pourtant avec la réalité politique et sociale de l'époque, façonnée par Metternich. Une solution de cette contradiction dans laquelle se trouve l'Allemagne semble alors résider, aux yeux de certains auteurs, dans l'idée suivant laquelle il ne resterait plus à l'Allemagne qu'à réaliser sa philosophie. Autor analizuje sens alternatywy, przed którą Cieszkowski postawił filozofię Hegla, mianowicie: albo prawa dialektyki są "ogólne i nienaruszalne", a wtedy muszą mieć zastosowanie w filozofii realnej, tj. w historii, albo są "za słabe, częściowe i niewystarczające", a więc nie mają zastosowania w sferze wiedzy. Autor polemizuje z Cieszkowskiego interpretacją heglowskiej filozofii historii, wskazując przy tym na to, że Cieszkowski w zasadniczo inny sposób niż Hegel rozumie w filozofii odniesienie teorii do praktyki.

Jerzy Braun (1901–1975) began as a scout activist, in subsequent years he became known as a politician, poet, prose writer, playwright, screenwriter, literary critic, philosopher, and theologian. In the inter-war years he founded and edited the periodicals Gazeta Literacka [Literary Gazette] and Zet, he also headed the Hoene-Wroński Society which propagated the thought of Józef Maria Hoene-Wroński. Under the Nazi occupation he founded and headed the underground organization Unia grouping Poland’s leading intellectuals. Unia propounded a universalistic program of integrating nations (...) and states whose outlines Braun had laid down before the war. Braun’s unionism theory, in which he strove for a harmonious combination of national and universal ideas, was based on 19th-century concepts developed by, among others, Bronisław Trentowski, August Cieszkowski and, of course, Józef Maria Hoene-Wroński. Imprisoned by the communists after the war, in the 1960s Braun attended the Vaticanum II sessions as an unofficial ecumenism expert. (shrink)

Although Gołuchowski was inspired mainly by Schelling, he was well acquainted with the views of other German idealist thinkers, including Hegel. Referring to Gołuchowski’s early works, as well as to his last book Dumania nad najwyższemi zagadnieniami człowieka (“Thoughts about the highest human issues”, published posthumously in 1861), I will discuss the main Hegelian motifs in his philosophy and their relationship to the Schellingian “basis” of his thought. I will also consider the main motifs of Gołuchowski’s critique of Hegel’s system (...) which can be treated – at least to some extent – as belonging to the revision of the assumptions of Hegelian absolute idealism made by such Polish adherents of Hegel’s philosophy as Trentowski, Libelt or Cieszkowski. Myśliciele polskiego romantyzmu, tworzący tzw. Filozofię czynu (A. Cieszkowski, B. Trentowski i J. M. Hoene-Wroński), powrócili de facto do koncepcji polityki wypracowanej już przez Arystotelesa, który sądził, że polityka jako część filozofii spełnia dwojakie funkcje: 1) poznawczą, gdy formułuje model doskonałego społeczeństwa, i 2) instrumentalną, gdy podaje wskazówki na temat działalności sprzyjającej utrzymaniu doskonałego ustroju. Myśliciele polscy uświadamiali sobie dobrze zarówno funkcję poznawczą i instrumentalną polityki. B. Trentowski sprecyzował te funkcje dobitnie. Funkcje poznawcze pełni filozofia polityki, która ustala cele (...) polityki. Natomiast funkcje instrumentalne polityki Trentowski rozszerzył i wzbogacił. Wyróżnił bowiem wiedzę o strategii politycznej, która ma określać metody, dzięki którym narody mogą się zbliżać do doskonałego ustroju, oraz cybernetykę jako sztukę politycznego sterowania masami i osiągania skutecznych zmian politycznych. Koncepcja cybernetyki jako umiejętności sterowania sprawami państwowymi stanowi ważny i oryginalny wkład polskiego romantyzmu do filozofii politycznej. (shrink)

August Ciszkowski was a philosopher, an author of economic treatises, a man dedicated to social activities, and a politician. His first book in philosophy Prolegomena zur Historiosophie came out in Berlin 1838. The author intended it to be a venture to overstep the Hegelian philosophy. But at the same time it represents the author’s own system – “the philosophy of action”. The book won a wide response in Poland and ha a notable impact on philosophic debates in Germany and Russia. (...) Not this book though, but Our Father should be considered the work of Cieszkowski’s life. (shrink)

The article discusses a concrete case of historiosophic theodicy, viz. the conception of August Cieszkowski, in order to present the structure of such conceptions and discuss theoretic and practical problems involved in them. The starting point of Cieszkowski’s deliberations on evil is a historical fact. To substantiate for his historiosophic optimism Cleszkowski must find not only the sense of the times in which he was living but must also explain the past, with all its moral evil: social catastrophes, (...) misery, suffering, and toil of the millions of people. Concentration on historical facts does not eliminate from the scope of his deliberations the problem of God’s acceptance of evil. This problem is simply shifted to another plane of reflections. Autor rozprawia się z mitami na temat Cieszkowskiego: po pierwsze z opinią, że Cieszkowski był wielkim filozofem, który nie tylko wpłynął na polskie, ale także na europejskie myślenie filozoficzne. Po drugie z mitem, że Cieszkowski jako krytyk Hegla doprowadził do rozpadu szkoły heglowskiej.

Throughout 19th and the first half of 20th centuries, Polish thinkers largely supplanted political philosophy with the philosophy of history. Such an approach produced an essential continuum, despite marked differences of concepts in different political and theoretical contexts. This continuity finds a particular expression in two ideas, nascent already in the 15th and 16th century Polish political thought, i.e. the idea of Poland’s Historical Mission , and a notion of a specifically Polish Love of Freedom.The author approaches this phenomenon by (...) way of presenting three sets of concepts: the late-Enlightenment one of S. In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:Journal of the History of Ideas 62.3 (2001) 543-564 [Access article in PDF] Eduard Gans and the Crisis of Hegelianism Warren Breckman In a 1834 report on the development of economic associationism in France, Johannes Schön detected an echo in Germany, the stirrings of a debate over the "modern Associationswesen." This discussion, he believed, would be crucial to the future of the "national economy." 1 Schön was an astute (...) observer, for the German discussion of associationism in the early 1830s was indeed but a faint echo of the French; and insofar as the idea of association was addressed by prominent social writers in those years, it was generally greeted with suspicion. This was the case, for instance, with the liberal thinker Robert von Mohl, whose influential 1835 tract on the social question criticized the notion of proletarian associationism. Conversely, by the early 1840s, association was on many tongues as a panacea for the social ills of the age. By 1840 Mohl himself had embraced the "Assoziationsprinzip" as an antidote to the atomized condition of modern social life. 2Among the relatively small number of German writers who did champion association in the 1830s, the claims for its significance were already grandiose. Moses Hess's Die heilige Geschichte der Menschheit (1837) and August von Cieszkowski's Prolegomena zur Historiosophie (1838) both linked social solidarity to millenarian expectations of a new age of humanity. Even before Hess or Cieszkowski, the first German book on Charles Fourier, by one S. R. Schneider, bore the title Das Problem der Zeit und dessen Lösung durch die Assoziation (1834), while another, by Fr. Hr. Tappehorn, was headed Die vollkommene Association, als Vermittlerin der Einheit des Vernunftstaates und der Lehre Jesu (1834). Yet the enormous importance assigned to associationism [End Page 543] in these titles exposes the ambiguity of the idea itself. For if, as one historian has claimed, "free association can be regarded in principle as the central organizational form of modern or industrial society," 3 there was no agreement on its nature. Should the right of association be understood as liberal or socialist, individualistic or collectivist? Is free association the core idea and mode of interaction of a pluralistic and competitive civil society, or is it the principle of unification that will overcome pluralism and competition? These fundamental questions were to preoccupy nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century debates in areas as diverse as revolutionary theory, labor union activism, and the regulation of business cartels. However, in the 1830s, under the pressure of the newly perceived social question, the stirrings of industrialization in Germany, and the revival of democratic politics in the July Revolution, these issues first appeared with a force that drew the attention of intellectuals.Perhaps no German intellectual of the 1830s so perfectly embodies the implicit tensions of the idea of associationism as the Hegelian philosopher of law, Eduard Gans (1797-1839). A student of the Heidelberg legal scholar A. J. Thibaut, Gans later came to be considered by Hegel as one of his most brilliant followers. Once Gans became a professor in the Juristic Faculty at the University of Berlin in the mid-1820s, it was he, not Hegel, who taught a generation of students the intricacies of Hegelian political philosophy. Gans died in 1839 at the age of 42, felled at a luncheon by a stroke while in mid-sentence, a victim, according to the Hallische Jahrbücher, of his own passion for discussion. This volubility is more than evident in his oeuvre, which includes a multi-volume study of inheritance law in world history, dozens of essays on legal philosophy and political and legal issues in his native Prussia and Europe, a popular memoir, and an edition of Hegel's Philosophy of Right. He was instrumental, moreover, in creating the Society for Scientific Critique in 1826, the Hegelian "counter-academy" established in response to the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences' decision to exclude Hegel, and he was a founder of Die Jahrbücher für wissenschaftliche Kritik, the organization's journal and the main organ of Hegelianism.
