Empirical evidence from the COVID-19 pandemic shows that women carried the major burden of additional housework in families. In a mixed-methods study, we investigate female and male remote workers’ experiences of working from home during the pandemic. We used the free association technique to uncover remote workers’ representations about WFH. Based on a sample of 283 Austrian remote workers cohabitating with their intimate partners our findings revealed that in line with traditional social roles, men and women in parent roles are (...) likely to experience WFH differently: Mothers’ representations about WFH emphasize perceived incompatibility between the work and non-work sphere whereas fathers’ representations highlight work-family facilitation of WFH. However, gender differences were also prevalent for women and men without children: Women seem to particularly benefit from more concentration at home, whereas men consider WFH as more efficient, practical and leading to less work. Thus, our findings imply that gender affected perceptions of WFH during the pandemic independently from children, but children seemed to increase the existing burden, in particular for women. To conclude, WFH can generally be seen as an enabler to reduce work-life/family conflict for both women and men, but bears different challenges based on the contextual situation. (shrink)

It relies upon thermodynamics and information theory and is, therefore, applicable to all kinds of systems, which makes it most suitable for cross-disciplinary investigations and innovation. SD is complex and cross-disciplinary by its very nature and, therefore, the ISA is the best way (...) to investigate its different subsystems. This article investigates the impacts of proper modeling of the wake effects and wind speed delays, between different wind turbines' rows, on the dynamic performance accuracy of the wind farms models. Three different modeling scenarios were compared to highlight the impacts of wake effects and wind speed time-delay models. In the first scenario, wind wake effect and time delay are ignored. Consequently, all wind turbines are assumed subjected to the same wind speed profile. The second scenario considers the wind wake (...) effect, and it was modeled by reducing the incident wind speed values by 0.5 m/s from one row to the next row facing the wind. The last scenario, the proposed model, used the wind wake effect model developed for wind turbines micrositting applications and considered the effect of the delay time between the wind speed profiles incident on the different wind turbines' rows. En este trabajo, indagoacerca de las repercusiones de la sintaxis de las lenguas indoeuropeas en la ontologíadominante de Occidente, plasmada en el predominio de la sustancialidad, como también delinflujo de la lógica lingüística de las lenguas nativas andinas en la Filosofía Andina,expresada en el predominio de (...) la relacionalidad. A su vez, la respuesta a esta cuestión exige distinguir con claridad las categorías ontológicas de los transcendentales, de los modos de ser y de las categorías lógicas y las lingüísticas. Solo tras haber trazado estas distinciones, el autor esboza una respuesta a la pregunta de cuál es el número de las categorías.

Al comienzo de El proceso el narrador afirma que Josef K. fue arrestado una mañana «sin que hubiera hecho nada malo». Son muy pocos, sin embargo, los críticos que se han tomado esta frase al pie de la letra. Puesto que Josef K. es finalmente ejecutado, se supone más bien que el personaje habría cometido algún tipo de falta. Aunque se ha especulado mucho sobre cuál pudiera ser esa falta, no se ha podido llegar a una firme decisión (...) al respecto. Lo que este modo de leer el relato revela es que resulta muy difícil concebir la idea de un mundo en el que fuera posible arrestar y ejecutar a personas inocentes, sin ninguna clase de justificación. Pieper’s originality and interest in contemporary thought are to be found above all in his having revitalized precious insights about the true being of man contained in classical wisdom. The structure of the philosophical act and the human spirit share a fundamental characteristic, that both are open to the whole of being. Thus, Pieper suggests that authentic philosohizing must consider all aspects of a question, including theological ones.

In the long run, changes in society, both local and global, are inevitable. What, then, is and should be the relation between a general theory of law and social change? In the 1995 Kobe Lecture in Japan, Josef Raz said, “By and large, only bad theory can lead to change.” But a ‘good theory’, intended only to describe the normative world and not directly to change it or society, enlightens us in a way that changes our outlook in one (...) way or another. As our picture of the world changes, to that extent the change will be reflected in our practice. The change in practice in turn will affect society bringing about its change in the long run. That change can be either what was intended by the theory or an unintended consequence of it, sometimes favorable and sometimes disastrous. A theory may change the course of things as well by putting a halt to change. But if we can tell in advance that the theory will not lead to any social change whatsoever, it only means that the theory is trivial, or valueless even as a description. (shrink)

El objetivo de este trabajo es problematizar la lectura que Alexandra von Teuffenbach ha hecho sobre el actuar del sacerdote alemán Joseph Kentenich, a quien denuncia por haber cometido abuso de poder, abuso espiritual y emocional contra un grupo de Hermanas de María en los años 50. De acuerdo con la investigadora, una revisión de los expedientes vaticanos daría cuenta de que la razón por la que Kentenich habría sufrido un exilio durante 14 años fuera de Schönstatt, correspondería a una (...) medida del visitador pontificio, el jesuita neerlandés Sebastian Tromp, para proteger a la comunidad de mujeres consagradas contra su abusador. El propósito de este artículo es mostrar que la cuestión juzgada por el Santo Oficio se mueve en otro plano, el que se debiese abordar desde una hermenéutica más objetiva que haga justicia a las palabras utilizadas en los documentos oficiales, así como a las mismas expresiones emitidas por el encargado de la visitación. En esa línea, se analiza en este trabajo la crítica dirigida por Tromp a la espiritualidad de Schoenstatt y de su fundador por falso misticismo, falso culto personal y falsa dirección espiritual. Para este trabajo se ha utilizado la reciente edición de los informes apostólicos publicados por Patris Verlag, archivos sobre los que sólo recientemente se ha levantado su embargo como parte de los documentos del pontificado de Pío XII. This paper deals with the relationship between divine knowledge and sense experience and the first three Thomistic ways to prove the existence of God. It reinforces the ways in the light of contributions and critiques coming from the realist-phenomenological and the analytic perspectives. To this end, it examines the insights of an important author of each of these two traditions, Josef Seifert and Richard Swinburne.

El presente artículo pretende abordar la recepción practicada por Marion del neoplatonismo agustiniano y dionisiano al interior de su fenomenología de la donación. Sirviéndonos del estudio de Josef Koch sobre las notas distintivas de estos dos tipos de neoplatonismo, sostenemos, a modo de hipótesis general, que en la propuesta de Marion se pone en juego un sincretismo fenomenológico en el que ambas tradiciones cooperar para formular lo que denominamos un “lenguaje de la saturación” como modo de nombrar fenómenos que (...) exceden el campo de los objetos y su certeza metafísica. Este intento de unificar ambas tradiciones del neoplatonismo presenta dos momentos. Por un lado, los estudios marionianos sobre la noción dionisiana de alabanza en _L’idole et la distance_ (1977) y en _De surcroît_ (2001). Por el otro lado, la lectura marioniana de Agustín en _Au lieu de soi_ (2008). Esta profundiza el problema de la alabanza como hilo conductor del neoplatonismo cristiano, a la vez que amplía dicha propuesta retomando el concepto agustiniano de _confessio_ y el vocablo _idipsum_. En el presente trabajo se asume la identidad de América Latina desde una categoría andina, a saber, Chakana , como elemento posibilitador de la integración del subcontinente. El estudio se realiza en el marco de la filosofía intercultural, específicamente desde el autor Josef Estermann, quien ha mostrado un profundo interés por la cuestión del diálogo intercultural entre Andes y Occidente . Interrogantes como: ¿responde el concepto y realidad de Chakana a la exigencia identitaria latinoamericana?, ¿cómo debe concebirse?, ¿puede la (...) identidad de Chakana favorecer al proyecto de integración de América Latina? son las principales preocupaciones de la presente labor. S. Rèvah, Jacob Teicher, Carl Gebhardt o, más recientemente, Richard Popkin, Josef Kaplan y Steven Nadler. Se formula el problema de trazar una analogía entre tres acontecimientos en principio difícilmente comparables entre sí: los procesos de Sócrates, Galileo y Josef K. Se analizan las principales interpretaciones que se han dado de cada uno de ellos y se concluye que son insatisfactorias. Se propone un enfoque alternativo -una estética del acontecimiento-, el cual pone de manifiesto una analogía profunda entre los tres procesos. Se argumenta, en primer lugar, que los tres procesos han tenido como trasfondo una (...) crisis de la articulación entre la imagen del mundo, la forma de vida y el sentido. Y, en segundo lugar, que los tres son modos arquetípicos de enfrentamiento entre el Poder y el individuo. (shrink)

Our daily lives unfold continuously, yet our memories are organised into distinct events, situated in a specific context of space and time, and chunked when this context changes (at event boundaries). Previous research showed that this process, termed event segmentation, enhances object-context binding but impairs temporal order memory. Physiologically, peaks in pupil dilation index event segmentation, similar to emotion-induced bursts of autonomic arousal. Emotional arousal also modulates object-context binding and temporal order memory. Yet, these two critical factors have not been (...) systematically studied together. To address this gap, we ran a behavioural experiment using a paradigm validated to study event segmentation and extended it with emotion manipulation. During encoding, we sequentially presented greyscale objects embedded in coloured frames (colour changes defining events), with a neutral or aversive sound. During retrieval, we tested participants’ memory of temporal order memory and object-colour binding. We found opposite effects of emotion and event segmentation on episodic memory. While event segmentation enhanced object-context binding, emotion impaired it. On the contrary, event segmentation impaired temporal order memory, but emotion enhanced it. These findings increase our understanding of episodic memory organisation in laboratory settings, and potentially in real life with perceptual changes and emotion fluctuations constantly interacting. Recital 33 GDPR has often been interpreted as referring to ‘broad consent’. This version of informed consent was intended to allow data subjects to provide their consent for certain areas of research, or parts of research projects, conditional to the research being in line with ‘recognised ethical standards’. In this article, we argue that broad consent is applicable in the emerging field of Computational Social Science (CSS), which lies at the intersection of data science and social science. However, the lack (...) of recognised ethical standards specific to CSS poses a practical barrier to the use of broad consent in this field and other fields that lack recognised ethical standards. Upon examining existing research ethics standards in social science and data science, we argue that they are insufficient for CSS. We further contend that the fragmentation of European Union (EU) law and research ethics sources makes it challenging to establish universally recognised ethical standards for scientific research. As a result, CSS researchers and other researchers in emerging fields that lack recognised ethical standards are left without sufficient guidance on the use of broad consent as provided for in the GDPR. We conclude that responsible EU bodies should provide additional guidance to facilitate the use of broad consent in CSS research. (shrink)

The approach of structuralism came to philosophy from social science. It was also in social science where, in 1950–1970s, in the form of the French structuralism, the approach gained its widest recognition. Since then, however, the approach fell out of favour in social science. Recently, structuralism is gaining currency in the philosophy of mathematics. After ascertaining that the two structuralisms indeed share a common core, the question stands whether general structuralism could not find its way back into social science. The (...) nature of the major objections raised against French structuralism – concerning its alleged ahistoricism, methodological holism and universalism – are reconsidered. While admittedly grounded as far as French structuralism is concerned, these objections do not affect general structuralism as such. The fate of French structuralism thus does not seem to preclude the return of general structuralism into social science, rather, it provides some hints where the difficulties may lie. (shrink)

The question ‘What is death?’ is by no means exclusively or primarily a question of medical science. It is, in the last analysis, a philosophical question. The philosopher’s role in the discussion of death is twofold: On the one hand, he has to explore those highly intelligible and essentially necessary aspects of death which no other human science investigates. This task includes a phenomenology of life and death, an ontology and metaphysics, as well as a philosophical anthropology of death. It (...) likewise includes an analysis of the language of death and life and of the logical structure of the arguments used in the debates about life and death. On the other hand the philosopher has to warn representatives of other disciplines against concluding too much from the little they know and extending their methods to areas where they are not appropriate. Careful reflection on both philosophical knowledge and philosophical ignorance concerning death shows, I shall argue, that the definition of death in terms of ‘brain death’ ought to be rejected.
