Research on automatic attention to emotional faces offers mixed results. Therefore we examined validity effects for facial expressions of different emotions with a dot-probe paradigm in seven studies. Systematic variations of type of emotion, CTI, task, cue size, and masking allow for a differentiated assessment of attentional capture by emotions and possible moderating factors. Results indicate a general absence of emotional validity effects as well as a lack of significant interactions with either of the manipulated factors, indicating that facial expressions (...) of emotions do not capture attention in a fully automatic fashion. These findings suggest that situational and contextual factors have to be taken into account when investigating attentional capture of emotional faces. (shrink)

Recent studies have demonstrated that parental homework involvement may not always foster students’ desired school outcomes. Such studies have also concluded that the quality of parental homework involvement matters, rather than the quantity. Most importantly, previous studies have shown that strong family-school partnerships (FSP) may help to improve parental involvement. However, there is little research on how FSP is related to homework involvement. The aim of the present study is to examine the link between an effective family-school communication (EFSC) – (...) as one aspect of FSP – and the quality of parental homework involvement in the German context. For this purpose, we developed a new measure of EFSC. Taking a self-determination theory perspective on parental need support, the quality of parental homework involvement was differentiated into two dimensions of parental supportive behavior: autonomy support and competence support. We analyzed the data of 309 parents (82% mothers) of school students (52% girls) who participated in an online survey. The structural equation model revealed a positive relation between EFSC and the quality of parental homework involvement, which in turn was positively associated with school performance and well-being. Moreover, we found that the quality of parental homework involvement mediated the relations of EFSC with achievement and well-being. The results of our study highlight the role of EFSC as a key performance factor that helps to improve the quality of parental homework involvement, thereby promoting student achievement and well-being. This article aims at shedding light on how civic engagement matters for the emergence of a European public sphere. It investigates the citizen's role in constituting it and asks how citizens, being located in different cultural and political contexts, participate in and appropriate EU political communication. First, the article develops a pragmatic approach to the European public sphere emphasizing the importance of citizens' communicative participation and, moreover, considers the transnational and transcultural character of European political communication. It is assumed that (...) the constitution of public spheres – representing social constructions fulfilling democratic functions – ultimately relies on the citizen audience's perception of the impact of common problems and the EU's political decisions as well as on their subsequent participation in public discourses. The second part of the article presents the findings of empirical case studies conducted in France, Italy and Germany to explore citizens' engagement in and appropriation of the European constitutional debate. Powerful ultrastructural tools are providing new insights into neuronal circuits, revealing a wealth of anatomically‐defined synaptic connections. These wiring diagrams are incomplete, however, because functional connectivity is actively shaped by neuromodulators that modify neuronal dynamics, excitability, and synaptic function. Studies of defined neural circuits in crustaceans, C. elegans, Drosophila, and the vertebrate retina have revealed the ability of modulators and sensory context to reconfigure information processing by changing the composition and activity of functional circuits. Was kann eine Rezeption Wittgensteinscher Philosophie für die Theologie leisten? Dieser Frage geht die Autorin anhand zweier prominenter Beispiele nach: des walisischen Religionsphilosophen D. Z. Phillips und des amerikanischen Theologen George A. Lindbeck. Dadurch werden zwei bedeutende Beiträge anglo-amerikanischer Wittgensteinrezeption für den deutschsprachigen Raum zugänglich gemacht. Als Ansatzpunkt einer «Theologie nach Wittgenstein» steht der Grammatikbegriff Wittgensteins im zweiten Teil der Arbeit im Zentrum. Vor dem Hintergrund des Wittgensteinschen Theologieverständnisses (unter Einbeziehung der Versuche Phillips' und Lindbecks) beschreibt die Autorin, wie eine (...) «Theologie als Grammatik» von Wittgenstein her gedacht werden kann. Bargmann’s superselection rule, which forbids the existence of superpositions of states with different mass and, therefore, implies the impossibility of describing unstable particles in non-relativistic quantum mechanics, arises as a consequence of demanding Galilean covariance of Schrödinger’s equation. However, the usual Galilean transformations inadequately describe the symmetries of non-relativistic quantum mechanics since they can produce phases in the wavefunction which are relativistic time contraction remnants and therefore, cannot be physically interpreted within the theory. In this paper we review the (...) incompatibility between Bargmann’s rule and Lorentz transformations in the low-velocities limit, we analyze its classical origin and we show that the Extended Galilei group characterizes better the symmetries of the theory. Furthermore, we claim that a proper description of non-relativistic quantum mechanics requires a modification of the notion of spacetime in the corresponding limit, which is noticeable only for quantum particles. A direct method showing the Thomas precession for an evolution of any vector quantity (a spatial part of a four-vector) is proposed. A useful application of this method is a possibility to trace correctly the presence of the Thomas precession in the Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi equation. It is pointed out that the Thomas precession is not incorporated in the kinematical term of the Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi equation, as it is commonly believed. When the Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi equation is interpreted in curved spacetimes, this (...) term is shown to be equivalent to the affine connection term in the covariant derivative of the spin four-vector evolving in a gravitational field. It then contributes to the geodetic precession. The described problem is an interesting and unexpected example showing that approximate methods used in special relativity, in this case to identify the Thomas precession, can distort the true meaning of physical laws. A canonical formalism for the relativistic classical mechanics of many particles is proposed. The evolution equations for a charged particle in an electromagnetic field are obtained and the relativistic two-body problem with an invariant interaction is treated. Along the same line a quantum formalism for the spinless relativistic particle is obtained by means of imprimitivity systems according to Mackey theory. A quantum formalism for the spin-1/2 particle is constructed and a new definition of spin1/2 in relativity is proposed. An evolution (...) equation for the spin-1/2 particle in an external electromagnetic field is given. The Bargmann Michel, and Telegdi equation follows from this formalism as a quasiclassical approximation. Finally, a new relativistic model for hydrogenlike atoms is proposed. The spectrum predicted is in agreement with Dirac's when radiative corrections have been added. (shrink)
