The normative sciences, the sign universe, self-control and rationality–according to Peirce.Bent Sørensen & Torkild Leo Thellefsen - 2010 - Cosmos and History 6 (1):142-152.
Although Charles S. Peirce, strictly speaking, never formulated a ‘full-blown’ normative theory—a single over-all architectonic system—we believe that there lies within his work a valuable sketch of the ideal for feeling, action, and thought, and how this ideal should be followed, and in connection to this, Peirce offered a model for rational behaviour, including self-control. In the following essay we will try, modestly, to draw a rough outline of this sketch. Firstly, we will focus on the three normative sciences, their (...)

The Reception of Charles S. Peirce in Denmark.Bent Sørensen & Torkild Thellefsen - 2014 - European Journal of Pragmatism and American Philosophy 6 (1).
    1. Setting the Scene Despite of or maybe because of much activity and numerous Danish scholars working with Peircean ideas, concepts, and methodology, there does not exist one single current concerning the reception of Peirce in Denmark. However, it seems safe to assume that the majority of Danish scholars working with Peirce – in one way or the other – initially came and to some degree still come to Peirce with an interest in his doctrine of signs or semeiotic, and (...)

Bodies out of control: Relapse and worsening of eating disorders in pregnancy.Bente Sommerfeldt, Finn Skårderud, Ingela Lundin Kvalem, Kjersti S. Gulliksen & Arne Holte - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
BackgroundBeing pregnant is a vulnerable period for women with a history of eating disorders. A central issue in eating disorders is searching control of one’s body and food preferences. Pregnancy implies being increasingly out of control of this. Treatment and targeted prevention start with the patient’s experience. Little is known about how women with a history of eating disorder experience being pregnant.MethodWe interviewed 24 women with a history of eating disorder at the time of pregnancy, recruited from five public pregnancy (...)

Sleep Duration and Insomnia in Adolescents Seeking Treatment for Anxiety in Primary Health Care.Bente S. M. Haugland, Mari Hysing, Valborg Baste, Gro Janne Wergeland, Ronald M. Rapee, Asle Hoffart, Åshild T. Haaland & Jon Fauskanger Bjaastad - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
There is limited knowledge about sleep in adolescents with elevated levels of anxiety treated within primary health care settings, potentially resulting in sleep problems not being sufficiently addressed by primary health care workers. In the current study self-reported anxiety, insomnia, sleep onset latency, sleep duration, and depressive symptoms were assessed in 313 adolescents referred to treatment for anxiety within primary health care. Results showed that 38.1% of the adolescents met criteria for insomnia, 34.8% reported short sleep duration, and 83.1% reported (...)

    Metaphor and cognition from a Peircean perspective.Bent Sørensen, Torkild Thellefsen & Morten Moth - 2007 - Transactions of the Charles S. Peirce Society 43 (3):562 - 574.
: C. S. Peirce had no theory of metaphor and provided only few remarks concerning the trope. Yet, some of these remarks seem to suggest that Peirce saw metaphor as fundamental to consciousness and thought. In this article we sketch a possible connection between metaphor and cognition; we understand Peircean metaphor as rooted in abduction; it is part of an intricate relation between experience, body, sign and guessing instinct as a semeiotic mechanism which can convey new insights.

Parametric induction of animacy experience.Natacha S. Santos, Nicole David, Gary Bente & Kai Vogeley - 2008 - Consciousness and Cognition 17 (2):425-437.
Graphical displays of simple moving geometrical figures have been repeatedly used to study the attribution of animacy in human observers. Yet little is known about the relevant movement characteristics responsible for this experience. The present study introduces a novel parametric research paradigm, which allows for the experimental control of specific motion parameters and a predictable influence on the attribution of animacy. Two experiments were conducted using 3D computer animations of one or two objects systematically introducing variations in the following aspects (...)

    The significance-effect is a communicational effect.Torkild Thellefsen, Bent Sørensen & Martin Thellefsen - 2011 - Sign Systems Studies 39 (1):209-222.
The paper presents the concept significance-effect outlined in a Peircean inspired communication model, named DynaCom. The significance effect is a communicational effect; the formal conditions for the release of the significance-effect are the following: (1) Communication has to take place within a universeof discourse; (2) Utterer and interpreter must share collateral experience; and (3) The cominterpretant must occur. If these conditions are met the meaning of thecommunicated sign is likely to be correctly interpreted by the interpreter. Here, correctly means in (...)

Pragmatic Semeiotic and Knowledge Management.Torkild Thellefsen & Bent Sørensen - 2009 - American Journal of Semiotics 25 (1-2):103-122.
The aim of the article is to present and discuss the concept of semeiotic constructivism, which is a pragmaticistic inspired method. Semeiotic constructivism has nothing to do with social constructivism but is a method that can construct meaning of concepts by implanting a telos in the concept or a certain quality in the artifact, in order to develop the object in a certain direction. The article touches on different elements in Charles Peirce’s philosophy e.g. hyperbolic philosophy and pragmaticism and combines (...)

    Shrinking Danish agriculture.Jørgen S. Nørgård & Bente L. Christensen - 1989 - Agriculture and Human Values 6 (1-2):110-116.
Danish agriculture is facing a turning point. Centuries of struggle to increase arable land area as well as its productivity is about to be reversed, due to overproduction and environmental problems. Some land will probably be turned back to nature, and the use of chemicals in agriculture in general will be reduced, perhaps with a lower productivity and a better environment as a consequence. This paper mainly describes some of the political actions taken in Denmark to influence environmental-agricultural issues. First, (...)

Dignity in relationships and existence in nursing homes’ cultures.Arne Rehnsfeldt, Åshild Slettebø, Vibeke Lohne, Berit Sæteren, Lillemor Lindwall, Anne Kari Tolo Heggestad, Maj-Britt Råholm, Bente Høy, Synnøve Caspari & Dagfinn Nåden - 2022 - Nursing Ethics 29 (7-8):1761-1772.
Introduction: Expressions of dignity as a clinical phenomenon in nursing homes as expressed by caregivers were investigated. A coherence could be detected between the concepts and phenomena of existence and dignity in relationships and caring culture as a context. A caring culture is interpreted by caregivers as the meaning-making of what is accepted or not in the ward culture. Background: The rationale for the connection between existence and dignity in relationships and caring culture is that suffering is a part of (...)
