Este artículo recorre sucintamente la historia de la evangelización en África y los procesos de inculturación de la fe actualmente en curso en el continente. Tal recorrido nos revela la necesidad de una figura bantú actualizada delMesías-Antepasado, modelo de plenitud humana para este mundo y paradigma para la salvación escatológica. El recorrido se introduce con un repaso sucinto de la comprensión de la salvación divina en el Antiguo y en el Nuevo Testamento. Sigue luego con un análisis de cómo esa (...) experiencia judeocristiana se presentó el siglo pasado en el mundo africano a través del programa de la «evangelización ». La reflexión continúa con una presentación de la actividad de los movimientos reaccionarios, las Iglesias Independientes de África, ante una evangelización abanderizada, y cierra con algunas propuestas para asumir como auténticamente africano (bantú) la plenitud propuesta por el mesianismo cristiano. Todo gira, por lo tanto, en torno a la relación del mundo tradicional bantú con el cristianismo católico y protestante, religiosidad ésta dominante hoy en día en los países de mayoría bantú. Apesar dos estudos sobre o tema das religiões de matrizes africanas já realizados no país, ainda subsiste o desconhecimento e a discriminação em relação a elas, por parte significativa da população brasileira. Não obstante a produção existente é imperativa a necessidade de novas abordagens e perspectivas de análise. Esse é o objetivo desta Comunicação: traduzir numa linguagem clara e fundamentada as práticas rituais, a configuração do espaço sagrado e o culto as divindades do panteão africano, especificamente do Candomblé. O texto (...) apresenta uma compreensão e interpretação do sistema religioso dessa religião, tendo como base pesquisa recente realizada nos terreiros do município de Contagem, região metropolitana de Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. Finalmente, o trabalho reconhece a complexidade do universo simbólico ora apresentado, reafirmando a necessidade de novos estudos sobre o tema, a fim de tornar esse universo compreensível e cada vez mais familiar. Mitos.Although studies on the subject of African Brazilian religions, there still remains the ignorance and discrimination towards them for a significant part of the population. Notwithstanding the existing production, new approaches and perspectives of analysis are needed. For this purpose, the present study translates into clear language some ritual practices, the configuration of the sacred space and worship performed to the deities of the African pantheon, specifically the Candomblé. The text presents an analysis and interpretation of the religious system of that religion, based on a recent survey conducted in the “terreiros” of Contagem, a metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. Finally, the paper acknowledges the complexity of the symbolic universe of that region and reaffirms the need for further research on the topic, in order to make this reality understandable and increasingly familiar. O artigo se propõe a refletir sobre a relação entre Estado, desenvolvimento no continente africano e pandemia da Covid-19. De caráter ensaístico, espera-se demonstrar que, além de simbolizarem o avanço da solidariedade africana vide integração como meio para a solução dos desafios africanos, as ações para mitigar o avanço da Covid-19 no continente africano, em verdade, refletem, em maior ou menor intensidade, o distanciamento do Estado africano com relação ao neoliberalismo. Para tal feito, a metodologia adotada será de abordagem qualitativa (...) e de caráter interpretativo, baseada na revisão da literatura e no uso de documentos oficiais, sendo o artigo estruturado, juntamente a essa introdução e as considerações finais, em mais três seções. Na primeira, buscaremos discorrer sobre as principais características da relação entre Estado e desenvolvimento econômico no continente africano durante a Guerra Fria. Em seguida, analisaremos o avanço do neoliberalismo e seus impactos na relação entre Estado e desenvolvimento nos países africanos. Por fim, na terceira seção o principal objetivo será destacar o modo de atuação dos países africanos na luta contra a pandemia da Covid-19. (shrink)

La pregunta sobre la muerte sigue siendo una gran preocupación para el hombre de hoy. La concepción bantú-africana de la muerte y el más allá ofrece una original respuesta a este misterio. Presentar la coincidencia y diferencias de dicha original respuestas con otras respuestas posibles será el objetivo de esta reflexión.

El presente texto es un prólogo a la traducción del ensayo de René Daumal “Los límites del lenguaje filosófico y los saberes tradicionales”. En la introducción se realiza una breve semblanza biográfica e intelectual del autor, y se recorren los tópicos recurrentes de su obra relacionados con el presente artículo. Daumal caracteriza el centro nodal de la Filosofía como “metafísica experimental”: disciplina que compromete integralmente todas las facultades humanas (especulación, sensación y praxis) y ante la cual un problema se (...) hace insoslayable: o bien el lenguaje es un instrumento para su enseñanza y conservación, una guía, o bien opera como un sello que impide la experiencia filosófica. El autor compara dos modos de transmisión verbal del conocimiento que intentaron evitar “el riesgo de devenir un fin en sí”; se refiere a los diálogos filosóficos de la obra platónica y a las Upanishad. MARINA PAOLA BANCHETTI-ROBINO is Associate Professor and Chair of the Philosophy Department at Florida Atlantic University. Her areas of research include phenomenology, philosophy of language, philosophy of science, philosophy of mind, and zoosemiotics. Her publications have appeared in such journals as Synthese, Husserl Studies, Idealistic Studies, Philosophy East and West, and The Review of Metaphysics. She has also contributed essays to The Role of Pragmatics in Contemporary Philosophy (1997), Feminist Phenomenology (2000), and Islamic Philosophy and Occidental Phenomenology on the Perennial (...) She co-edited Philosophies of the Environment and Technology (1999) and is currently working on a book-length project entitled The Birth of Science Out of the Spirit of Myth: A Historico-Phenomenological Re-Examination of the Crisis of the European Sciences. BERNARD BOXILL was born in Saint Lucia, West Indies where he received his primary and secondary education. He studied philosophy at the University of New Brunswick, Canada and at the University of California, Los Angeles where he was awarded a doctorate in philosophy in 1971. He has published numerous articles, a book, Blacks and Social Justice (1992), and is professor of philosophy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. ED BRANDON was born and educated in England, studying philosophy and linguistics at The University of York, England, and later philosophy at The University of Oxford with the late John Mackie. After teaching in Sierra Leone and briefly in England, he went to teach philosophy of education at the University of the West Indies at Mona, Jamaica in 1978. From 1992 he has been attached to a policy unit of the Vice-Chancellery, based at the Cave Hill campus in Barbados, where he has been assisting since 2000 with a new major in philosophy. He is also Ongoing Visiting Professor of Philosophy and Government at the University of the West Indies at Mona, Jamaica. Professor Henry also serves as the editor of the C. L. R. James Journal, and has published numerous articles on the political economy of the Caribbean as well as on African, African-American, and Afro-Caribbean philosophy. ESIABA IROBI is Associate Professor of International Theatre/Performance Studies at Ohio University, Athens. His groundbreaking book: A Theatre for Cannibals: Resisting Globalization on the Continent and Diaspora since 1441 will be published by Palgrave Macmillan, London, in 2007. He has been invited to be an External Resident Fellow at the prestigious Dartmouth College Humanities Institute for the 2007-2008 academic year. CHIKE JEFFERS is a graduate student in the Ph.D. program of the Philosophy Department at Northwestern University. His interests are in Africana philosophy, social and political philosophy, ethics, philosophy of religion and aesthetics. He is originally from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. CATHERINE JOHN is Associate Professor of African Diaspora Literary and Cultural Studies at the University of Oklahoma. Her book Clear Word and Third Sight: Folk Groundings and Diasporic Consciousness in African Caribbean Writing was co-published by Duke University Press and UWI Press in 2003. She has published several articles on Caribbean literature and culture and her current book project is entitled The Just Society and the Diasporic Imagination. She spends her summer working in Woodside, St. Mary, Jamaica helping with a summer school for children and participating in the community's emancipation celebration. KENNETH KNIES is a doctoral student in philosophy at Stony Brook University. His areas of focus are phenomenology and ancient philosophy. He is also a contributing editor for Political Affairs magazine. EDIZON LEN is a photographer and coordinator of the Fondo Documental Afro-Andino at the Universidad Andina Simòn Bolivar in Quito, Ecuador. In 2006, he was curator of the photo exhibit "The Color of the Diaspora" presented at the Cultural Center of the Catholic University of Ecuador and the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He is currently completing his doctorate at the Universidad Andina Simòn Bolivar with a focus on Maroon thought. REKHA MENON is Associate Professor of Art History at State University of New York, Buffalo State. She is the author of Seductive Aesthetics of Post Colonialism (forthcoming). El texto es un manifiesto de las autoridades tradicionales U'wa Werjain Shita, en las que reafirman sus principios y convicciones, y denuncian las malas prácticas y mala conciencia del hombre blanco. Afirman su decisión de defender su Tierra, y proclaman que con cada especie que desaparece y con cada pueblo originario que se extingue, la comunidad humana se empequeñece.

Las Ciencias Cognitivas de la Religión han desarrollado desde hace casi veinte años explicaciones naturalistas sobre la mente y el comportamiento religioso, abriendo ese campo al análisis científico. Los estudiosos acostumbrados a comprender la religión desde una tradición más humanista o un enfoque hermenéutico, como teólogos, filósofos de la religión, y fenomenólogos pueden sentirse sorprendidos por la aplicación de métodos biológicos-evolutivos, cognitivos y neurológicos para explicar mejor la religión; a menudo perciben como extraño el uso de nuevos términos, conceptos y (...) formas de entender la religión, más allá de los marcos tradicionales. El tiempo ha madurado para una evaluación de la plausibilidad que exhiben estas nuevas teorías, teniendo en cuenta sus respectivos marcos y la evidencia empírica reportada. (shrink)

El presente estudio propone una lectura de la novela de José Saramago O Evangelo segundo Jesus Cristo a la luz de aquellos textos antiguos judíos y cristianos de temática bíblica que han sido excluidos de los correspondientes cánones sagrados de los judíos, protestantes y católicos. El análisis de la obra del escritor portugués revela un alto nivel de lo que se podría denominar intertextualidad inversa. Para reconstruir la vida de Jesús, Saramago se apropia de episodios, personajes y símbolos tanto de (...) la Biblia como de esos apócrifos antiguos y los transforma de tal manera que adquieren un significado opuesto al que poseen en sus respectivas fuentes textuales. De esta forma, Saramago lleva a cabo una exégesis personal particularmente osada que tergiversa o desmonta ciertos presupuestos que se consideran parte esencial de la tradición bíblica. Para lograr su propósito, el novelista pone en práctica una serie de técnicas literarias y hermenéuticas afines a las que se usaban en los textos apócrifos de la Antigüedad. Al igual que en un midrás hebreo, Saramago vuelve a contar una historia sagrada desde una perspectiva distinta, en este caso la de los débiles y desposeídos. Igualmente, su deseo de rellenar los huecos que quedaron sin explicación en los Evangelios canónicos hace eco de la técnica judía del derás. A través de un análisis detallado de los personajes principales y de algunos símbolos recurrentes que aparecen en la novela se descubre una glorificación de lo pequeño y de los marginados como focos de resistencia contra las fuerzas poderosas que desean dominarlos y silenciarlos. En el centro de esta lucha se encuentra un Jesús profundamente humano que busca inútilmente la respuesta a algunas de las interrogantes fundamentales que siguen atormentando a la humanidad: ¿Por qué entraron al mundo el mal y el dolor? ¿Por qué castiga Dios a los seres humanos? ¿Por qué tiene que sufrir el hombre la angustia de la culpa? The history of the concept of “religion” in Western tradition has intrigued scholars for years. This important collection of eighteen essays brings further light to the ongoing debate. Three of the invited participants, W.C. Smith, M. Despland and E. Feil, has each previously written impressive books treating this subject; the last two acknowledged the impact and continuing influence of Smith’s work, The Meaning and End of Religion. Riassunto: L’uomo ha sempre riflettuto su se stesso e sulla sua identità e la sua riflessione si è strutturata attraverso molteplici forme espressive. Le domande esistenziali nascono nell’uomo con il suo esistere. Il pensiero filosofico occidentale ha egemonizzato il campo filosofico e antropologico imponendo le proprie categorlie di pensiero come le uniche razionali e scientifiche in nome di una presunta superiorità legata a un’idea di sviluppo fondata su un modello prettamente economico. In questo articolo si cercherà di decostruire le certezze (...) scientifiche del pensiero filosofico occidentale e analizzare criticamente il suo primato evidenziando come esistano diverse forme e rappresentazioni dell’esistenza umana. Il pensiero filosofico africano ci offre una prospettiva di lettura dell’essere che contrasta con la visione antropologica occidentale, ma allo stesso tempo ha una sua dignità e coerenza logica fondata su presupposti antropologici propri. Nata come resistenza al dominio del pensiero filosofico e antropologico occidentale, la filosofia africana si è sviluppata e contaminata dalle riflessioni che l’hanno preceduta. Non esiste un pensiero puro, poiché tutte le riflessioni umane sono ibride e nascono dall’incontro e dallo scontro con le altre posizioni filosofiche. Forse è venuto il tempo per riformulare il pensiero filosofico e antropologico da un punto di vista interculturale.: Man has always reflected on himself and his identity. His reflection has been structured through multiple forms of expression. In fact, existential questions arise in man with his existence. Western philosophical thought has dominated the philosophical and anthropological field by imposing its own categories of thought as the only rational and scientific ones, in the name of an alleged superiority linked to an idea of development based on a purely economic model. This article attempts to deconstruct the scientific c certainties of Western philosophical thought and critically analyzes its primacy by highlighting how there are different forms and representations of human existence. African philosophical thought offers a perspective that contrasts with the Western anthropological vision, having its dignity and its logical coherence based on its own anthropological assumptions. Born as resistance to the domination of Western philosophical and anthropological thought, African philosophy has developed and has been contaminated by the reflections that preceded it. All human reflections are hybrid and arise from the encounter and confrontation with other philosophical positions. Perhaps the time has come to reformulate philosophical and anthropological thought from an intercultural point of view. (shrink)

How do we deal with difference personally, interpersonally, nationally? Can we weave a cohesive social fabric in a religiously plural society without suppressing differences? This collection of significant essays suggests that to truly honour differences in matters of faith and religion we must publicly exercise and celebrate them. The secular/sacred, public/private divisions long considered sacred in the West need to be dismantled if Canada (or any nation state) is to develop a genuine mosaic that embraces fundamental differences instead of a (...) melting pot that marginalizes. An ethics of difference starts with a recognition of difference, not as deviance or deficit that threatens but as otherness to connect with, cherish, and celebrate. The book begins with the suggestion that our inability to come to terms with social plurality is not fundamentally the fault of religious differences, and that a public/private split inadequately deals with matters of basic difference. It then explores how encouraging people to live out their respective faiths may open new possibilities for respectful, honourable, and just negotiations of contemporary dilemmas arising out of the multicultural fabric of Canadian life. Towards an Ethics of Community introduces readers to some of the most challenging and divisive dilemmas we face in this increasingly pluralistic, postmodern world — issues such as family and domestic violence, Aboriginal rights, homosexuality and public policy, and female genital mutilation. Neglected monotheism is how Thaddeus Metz and Motsamai Molefe designate the common denominator among the various religious cultures found across sub-Saharan Africa. This is a product of their engagement with such traditional African religious themes as God’s nature, God’s will, life beyond death, and the duration of existence beyond or without a body consequent on death. This article uses traditional Yoruba theology and its ritual archive, the Ifa corpus, to argue that Metz and Molefe’s monotheistic proposal is a hasty generalization. (...)
