Researching lived experience in health care: Significance for care ethics.Bernadette Dierckx de Casterlé, Sofie Tl Verhaeghe, Marijke C. Kars, Annemarie Coolbrandt, Marleen Stevens, Maaike Stubbe, Nathalie Deweirdt, Jeroen Vincke & Maria Grypdonck - 2011 - Nursing Ethics 18 (2):232-242.
The aim of this article is to demonstrate the usefulness of qualitative research for studying the ethics of care, bringing to light the lived experience of health care recipients, together with the importance of methods that allow reconstruction of the processes underlying this lived experience. Lived experiences of families being approached for organ donation, parents facing the imminent death of their child and patients being treated using stem cell transplantation are used to illustrate how ethical principles are differentiated, modified or (...)

Linking Cognitive and Social Aspects of Sound Change Using Agent‐Based Modeling.Jonathan Harrington, Felicitas Kleber, Ulrich Reubold, Florian Schiel & Mary Stevens - 2018 - Topics in Cognitive Science 10 (4):707-728.
Using agent‐based modelling, Harrington, Kleber, Reubold, Schiel & Stevens (2018) develop a unified model of sound change based on cognitive processing of human speech and theories of how social factors constrain the spread of change throughout a community. They conclude that many types of change result from how biases in the phonetic distribution of phonological categories are transmitted via accommodation processes between individuals in interaction.

Conceptualizations of Big Data and their epistemological claims in healthcare: A discourse analysis.Antoinette de Bont, Rik Wehrens & Marthe Stevens - 2018 - Big Data and Society 5 (2).
In recent years, the healthcare field welcomed an emerging field of practices captured under the umbrella term ‘Big Data’. This term is surrounded with positive rhetoric and promises about the ability to analyse real-world data quickly and comprehensively. Such rhetoric is highly consequential in shaping debates on Big Data. While the fields of Science and Technology Studies and Critical Data Studies have been instrumental in elaborating the neglected and problematic dimensions of Big Data, it remains an open question how and (...)

An explorative study of experiences of healthcare providers posing as simulated care receivers in a 'care-ethical' lab.Linus Vanlaere, Madeleine Timmermann, Marleen Stevens & Chris Gastmans - 2012 - Nursing Ethics 19 (1):68-79.
In recent approaches to ethics, the personal involvement of health care providers and their empathy are perceived as important elements of an overall ethical ability. Experiential working methods are used in ethics education to foster, inter alia, empathy. In 2008, the care-ethics lab ‘sTimul’ was founded in Flanders, Belgium, to provide training that focuses on improving care providers' ethical abilities through experiential working simulations. The curriculum of sTimul focuses on empathy sessions, aimed at care providers' empathic skills. The present study (...)

The causes and scope of political egalitarianism during the Last Glacial: a multi-disciplinary perspective.Doron Shultziner, Thomas Stevens, Martin Stevens, Brian A. Stewart, Rebecca J. Hannagan & Giulia Saltini-Semerari - 2010 - Biology and Philosophy 25 (3):319-346.
This paper reviews and synthesizes emerging multi-disciplinary evidence toward understanding the development of social and political organization in the Last Glacial. Evidence for the prevalence and scope of political egalitarianism is reviewed and the biological, social, and environmental influences on this mode of human organization are further explored. Viewing social and political organization in the Last Glacial in a much wider, multi-disciplinary context provides the footing for coherent theory building and hypothesis testing by which to further explore human political systems. After worldview: Christian higher education in postmodern worlds.J. Matthew Bonzo & Michael Roger Stevens (eds.) - 2009 - Sioux Center, Iowa: Dordt College Press.
These collected essays represent a communal attempt, by some of the foremost North American worldview scholars, to respond to some of the pressing questions surrounding the many-sided concept that worldview has become in contemporary Christian discourse. Is worldview too modern a concept? Is it too static a way of considering reality? Is it overly intellectual and an invitation for apologetic abuse? Is it hindering more than helping the enterprise of Christian education to use worldview as the point of integration? These (...)

Why Personal Dreams Matter: How professionals affectively engage with the promises surrounding data-driven healthcare in Europe.Antoinette de Bont, Anne Marie Weggelaar-Jansen, Johanna Kostenzer, Rik Wehrens & Marthe Stevens - 2022 - Big Data and Society 9 (1).
Recent buzzes around big data, data science and artificial intelligence portray a data-driven future for healthcare. As a response, Europe's key players have stimulated the use of big data technologies to make healthcare more efficient and effective. Critical Data Studies and Science and Technology Studies have developed many concepts to reflect on such overly positive narratives and conduct critical policy evaluations. In this study, we argue that there is also much to be learned from studying how professionals in the healthcare (...)

What is educational entrepreneurship? Strategic action, temporality, and the expansion of US higher education.Alexander T. Kindel & Mitchell L. Stevens - 2021 - Theory and Society 50 (4):577-605.
The massive expansion of US higher education after World War II is a sociological puzzle: a spectacular feat of state capacity-building in a highly federated polity. Prior scholarship names academic leaders as key drivers of this expansion, yet the conditions for the possibility and fate of their activity remain under-specified. We fill this gap by theorizing what Randall Collins first callededucational entrepreneurshipas a special kind of strategic action in the US polity. We argue that the cultural authority and organizational centrality (...)

    Third Line.Sasha Opeiko & Martin Stevens - 2015 - International Journal of Žižek Studies 9 (1).
Third Line is an installation of video projections and selected artefacts presented at the 2014 International Žižek Studies Conference: Parallax Future in Art and Design, Ideology, and Philosophy, with the support of the Ontario Arts Council. Third Line represents a self-referential and speculative study of haiku structure, in conjunction with the idea of optical interference and parallax. The title refers to Žižek’s explanation of the haiku function: the third line of haiku stands for the momentary event where reality loses its (...)

Spectrums of thought in gesture.Michael Paul Stevens & Simon Harrison - 2017 - Pragmatics and Cognition 24 (3):441-473.
This study examines the form and function of gestural depictions that develop over extended stretches of concept explanation by a philosopher. Building onStreeck’s (2009)explorations of depiction by gesture, we examine how this speaker’s process of exposition involves sequences of multimodal, analogical depiction by which the philosophical concepts are not only expressed through gesture forms, but also dynamically analyzed and construed through gestural activity. Drawing on perspectives of gesture as active meaning making (Müller 2014,2016,Streeck 2009), we argue that the build-up of (...)
