Two of Leibniz's most studied and often quoted works appear in this volume. Published in 1686, the Discourse on Metaphysics consists of the philosopher's explanation of individual perception as an expression of the rest of the universe from a unique perspective. The whole world--the best of all possible worlds, as he famously remarks--is thus contained in each individual substance. The Monadology, written in 1714, offers a concise synopsis of Leibniz's philosophy, establishing the laws of final causes, which underlie God's free (...) choice to create the best possible world--a world that serves as dynamic and perfectly ordered evidence of the wisdom of its creator. En 1684 le tout nouveau periodique edite a Leipzig, les Acta Eruditorum, publie le texte fondateur du calcul leibnizien: Nova methodus pro maximis et minimis. Ce n'etait pas le premier article de Leibniz dans cette revue et ce ne sera pas le dernier. De 1682 a 1713 s'echelonnent des publications, aujourd'hui classiques, sur l'Isochrone, la Chainette, la Brachystochrone, etc. Ce volume en reunit vingt-six, en majorite traduites pour la premiere fois en langue francaise. Leur selection fut essentiellement guidee par la (...) volonte de mettre a la portee du lecteur les principaux ecrits mathematiques de Leibniz consacres au calcul differentiel et integral. Outre les resultats scientifiques, on decouvrira dans ces textes l'interet epistemologique de Leibniz pour l'invention, la methode, l'histoire et son souci d'une ethique de la recherche. (shrink)

Agamemnon’s death cries elicit an elaborate choral debate structured to track and satirize the movement from interventionist impulse to evasion and inaction, and characterized by procedural terminology, the categories speech/delay/action, and self-conscious reflections on its own deliberative practice. These are familiar themes from later strictures of public discourse, in history and political oratory, and from that perspective the dramatic chorus too may be read as a meta-rhetorical comment on ekklesiastic deliberation where logoi and erga fly out of sync. Leibniz's political and ethical writing long has been neglected, and with this new edition Professor Riley makes available the most representative pieces from Leibniz's political theory. This new edition, specially prepared for this series, is the first to make a considerable number of Leibniz's writings available in English, and includes three previously unpublished manuscripts, a selection of political letters, an introduction, notes, and a critical biography.

La correspondance avec Jakob Thomasius (Professeur a l'Universite de Leipzig et premier maitre de Leibniz), presentee pour la premiere fois de maniere exhaustive, s'etend de 1663 a 1672. Elle revele les principales preoccupations du jeune philosophe et permet d'apprecier le point de depart de ses reflexions, specialement en physique. Nourri d'un aristotelisme eclaire, en rupture avec la scolastique, Leibniz esperait jeter les bases (...) d'une Reforme de la philosophie naturelle, analogue a celle que Luther, au siecle precedent, avait realisee en theologie. _Discourse on Metaphysics and Other Essays_ contains complete translations of the two essays that constitute the best introductions to Leibniz’s complex thought: _Discourse on Metaphysics_ of 1686 and _Monadology_ of 1714. These are supplemented with two essays of special interest to the student of modern philosophy, _On the Ultimate Origination of Things_ of 1697 and the Preface to his New Essays of 1703-1705. In General Inquiries on the Analysis of Notions and Truths, Leibniz articulates for the first time his favourite solution to the problem of contingency and displays the main features of his logical calculus. Leibniz composed the work in 1686, the same year in which he began to correspond with Arnauld and wrote the Discourse on Metaphysics. General Inquiries supplements these contemporary entries in Leibniz's philosophical oeuvre and demonstrates the intimate connection that links Leibniz's philosophy with the attempt to create a (...) new kind of logic. This edition presents the text and translation of the General Inquiries along with an introduction and commentary. Given the composite structure of the text, where logic and metaphysics strongly intertwine, Mugnai's introduction falls into two sections, respectively dedicated to logic and metaphysics. The first section ('Logic') begins with a preliminary account of Leibniz's project for a universal characteristic and focuses on the relationships between rational grammar and logic, and discusses the general structure and the main ingredients of Leibniz's logical calculus. The second section ('Metaphysics') is centred on the problem of contingency, which occupied Leibniz until the end of his life. Mugnai provides an account of the problem, and details Leibniz's proposed solution, based on the concept of infinite analysis. (shrink)

Das Kernstück dieses Bandes bildet die 1765 erstmalig veröffentlichte dialogische Auseinandersetzung von Leibniz mit dem Hauptwerk von John Locke "An Essay Concerning Human Understanding" in der französischen Übersetzung, die Pierre Coste 1700 herausbrachte. Während anderen Ausgaben die unvollständige Reinschrift zugrunde liegt, wird in dieser ersten kritischen Edition zusätzlich der vollständig erhaltene erste Entwurf herangezogen. Vorangestellt werden die Auswertung verschiedener Handexemplare und vorbereitende Schriften, die Leibniz bei der Lektüre der 1690 erschienenen Originalausgabe niederschrieb, sowie seine Stellungnahme zum Streit zwischen Locke und (...) Stillingfleet, dem Bischof von Worcester. Der abschließende dritte Teil gibt Leibniz' Bemerkungen zur Kritik Lockes an Malebranche wieder sowie Berichtigungen seines französischen Sprachgebrauchs, die Leibniz nach Fertigstellung der Reinschrift der "Nouveaux Essais" von Refugies erbeten hat.
