Exploring the ethics of tuberculosis human challenge models.Abie Rohrig, Josh Morrison, Gavriel Kleinwaks, Jonathan Pugh, Helen McShane & Julian Savulescu - forthcoming - Journal of Medical Ethics.
We extend recent conversation about the ethics of human challenge trials to tuberculosis (TB). TB challenge studies could accelerate vaccine development, but ethical concerns regarding risks to trial participants and third parties have been a limiting factor. We analyse the expected social value and risks of different challenge models, concluding that if a TB challenge trial has between a 10% and a 50% chance of leading to the authorisation and near-universal delivery of a more effective vaccine 3–5 years earlier, then (...)

A Foucaultian Approach to Academic Anxiety.Gavrielle Levine - 2008 - Educational Studies: A Jrnl of the American Educ. Studies Assoc 44 (1):62-76.
Academic anxiety interferes with achievement and performance, as well as social and psychological development among children and adults. Although the writings of Michel Foucault do not address anxiety directly, his themes of knowledge and power have been applied to education and describe relationships that are likely to create anxiety among some participants. This article utilizes concepts from the work of Michel Foucault, as well as the experimental psychology and educational psychology literatures, to understand the causes and consequences of academic anxiety (...)

The Ways We Wonder “What If?”.Gavriel D. Rosenfeld - 2016 - Journal of the Philosophy of History 10 (3):382-411.
_ Source: _Volume 10, Issue 3, pp 382 - 411 In this essay, I seek to refine our understanding of historical counterfactuals by classifying them into a new typology. After providing a systematic definition of counterfactuals, I divide them up into five different categories: causal, emotive, temporal, spatial, and manneristic. Within each of these categories, I identify eighteen different types of counterfactuals, which I classify with descriptive names and illustrate with specific examples from recent works of historiography. The different types (...)

Why do we ask "what if?" Reflections on the function of alternate history.Gavriel Rosenfeld - 2002 - History and Theory 41 (4):90–103.
The new prominence of alternate history in Western popular culture has increasingly prompted scholars to historicize it as a broader phenomenon. What has largely escaped notice until now, however, has been the question of the underlying function of alternate history as a genre of speculative narrative representation. In this essay, I argue that writers and scholars have long produced “allohistorical narratives” out of fundamentally presentist motives. Allohistorical tales have assumed different typological forms depending upon how their authors have viewed the (...)
