A major aim of the books in this series is to promote psychology's appreciation of the neglected giants in its history. The chapters document the significance of these early contributions, many of them made more than a century ago. Most of the chapters are revisions of invited addresses delivered at psychological conventions. Several of the authors are students, colleagues, or offspring of their pioneers and all of them are intrigued by the life and work of the psychologists about whom they (...) have written. All of the portraits are informal; on occasion, even humorous. Some are "impersonations"--telling stories in what were or might have been the pioneer's own words. This book provides source materials for teachers of undergraduate courses in psychology--particularly the history of psychology--who want to add a personal view in their lectures and offer interesting readings for their students. The longing for an enduring intimate relationship and the longing for sex are connected, but not unproblematically. Throughout this century, a `sexualization of love' and an `eroticization of sex' have continued, but only since the Sexual Revolution the traditional lustbalance of a lust dominated sexuality for men and a complementary love- or relationship-dominated sexuality for women has come under attack. The article describes and interprets these developments, focusing on the relational and psychical processes. It argues, for example, that the emancipation (...) of women and their sexuality has intensified both erotic and sexual awareness as well as both types of longings. The article is divided into two longer sections. The first is subdivided according to the four phases that are distinguished. The second attempts to interpret and explain these changes by presenting them as regularities in all processes of integration and civilization. (shrink)

_Five Faces of Modernity_ is a series of semantic and cultural biographies of words that have taken on special significance in the last century and a half or so: _modernity_, _avant-garde_, _decadence_, _kitsch_, and _postmodernism_. The concept of modernity—the notion that we, the living, are different and somehow superior to our predecessors and that our civilization is likely to be succeeded by one even superior to ours—is a relatively recent Western invention and one whose time may already have passed, if (...) we believe its postmodern challengers. Calinescu documents the rise of cultural modernity and, in tracing the shifting senses of the five terms under scrutiny, illustrates the intricate value judgments, conflicting orientations, and intellectual paradoxes to which it has given rise. _Five Faces of Modernity_ attempts to do for the foundations of the modernist critical lexicon what earlier terminological studies have done for such complex categories as _classicism_, _baroque_, _romanticism_, _realism_, or _symbolism_ and thereby fill a gap in literary scholarship. The scope of this article is to build a bridge between, on the one hand, the data of Trinitarian theology as it has been elaborated by the Church in the context of the controversies that arose through the centuries and which has been sanctioned by the authority of the councils, and, on the other hand, the same Trinitarian doctrine as source of the Christian experience, which finds its privileged expression with the mystics. The article places itself in the context of (...) the Thomist school. It thus enlightens the meeting-point constituted by reflection on the person of the Spirit. Two mediatory notions appear then fundamental: the first considers the particular relationship between the Spirit and the charity he spreads in our hearts, the other sends back to the idea of the invisible mission of the Spirit which testifies to the presence in us of the Father. This reflection on the Spirit takes into account, according to the thought of the Fathers, the continuous articulation between the invisible mission of the Spirit and the visible one of the Son in his incarnation and in his revelatory function.
