    Disability, bioethics, and rejected knowledge.Christopher Newell - 2006 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 31 (3):269 – 283.
In this article I explore disability as far more than individual private tragedy, suggesting it has a social location and reproduction. Within this context we look at the power relations associated with bioethics and its largely uncritical use of the biomedical model. Within that context the topics of genetics, euthanasia, and biotechnology are explored. In examining these topics a social account of disability is proposed as rejected knowledge. Accordingly we explore the political nature of bioethics as a project.

The social nature of disability, disease and genetics: a response to Gillam, Persson, Holtug, Draper and Chadwick.C. Newell - 1999 - Journal of Medical Ethics 25 (2):172-175.
The dominance of the biomedically informed view of disability, genetics, and diagnosis is explored. An understanding of the social nature of disability and genetics, especially in terms of oppression, adds a richer dimension to an understanding of ethical issues pertaining to genetics. This is much wider than the limited question of whether or not such technology discriminates. Instead, it is proposed that such technology will perpetuate the oppression and control of people with disability, especially if the knowledge of people with (...)

Disabled Theologies and the Journeys of Liberation to Where our Names Appear.Christopher Newell - 2007 - Feminist Theology 15 (3):322-345.
This article questions the notion of a disembodied theology which can provide ultimate answers about an absolute God. It places this questioning within the truly challenging arena of mental health. While issuing challenge to theology the author calls for a pastoral theology that is willing to cross boundaries, those that were perhaps not even previously imagined. This is a daring, moving and embodied challenge to the more constraining and controlling areas of theology and pastoral care.

The ethics of narrative ethics: some teaching reflections.Christopher Newell - 1998 - Health Care Analysis 6 (2):171-174.
SummaryNarrative is reemerging as a teaching tool. Narrative ethics is being seen as a rich endeavour both for clinical practice and academic teaching and research. Narrative helps put ethics into context. However, the use of narrative increasingly raises issues in teaching and research: for instance, how do we do justice to the people and narratives we utilise, and what does our practice reveal about our ethics? In this article examples are drawn from clinical practice, teaching and case notes to draw (...)

‘Let the Rain Fall Relentlessly’: Singing the Song of Survival.Christopher Newell - 2013 - Feminist Theology 22 (1):109-118.
This paper, a version of which was presented at the ‘Feminist Futures’ twentieth Anniversary conference of the British and Irish Feminist Theology Summer School in July 2012, is, in one sense, a misnomer. Through the lived experience of one remarkable woman with whom I have the privilege of working as a mental health chaplain and companion, I recount her past of pervasive patriarchal abuse, pain, and psychic ‘storms’ but also her present that contains her songs of survival and her language (...)

Biomedicine, Genetics and Disability: reflections on nursing and a philosophy of holism.C. Newell - 2000 - Nursing Ethics 7 (3):227-231.
This article critically explores the notion of those sociopolitical spaces that are 'disability', 'holism' and 'genetics', arguing from the perspectives of someone who identifies as having a disability. Medical genetics is seen to reflect the ideology and dominant biomedical reductionist thought. In contrast with this, it is proposed that disability and health are inherently social. A nursing approach is seen to recognize the social and holistic nature of the human person and to present a critical reflection on the reductionistic applications (...)
