Au début du XXe siècle, l’Allemagne voit émerger un lieu de savoir nouveau, étrange, alternatif sinon hostile à l’Université, le « George-Kreis », association créatrice et intellectuelle rassemblée autour du poète Stefan George (1868‑1933). Dès la fin des années 1900, Platon apparaît comme le modèle politique et éducatif du Cercle et, partant, du vaste « mouvement spirituel » dont George est considéré comme le guide. Entre 1910 et 1933, les « georgéens » consacrent à Platon une demi-douzaine de livres, de (...) nombreux articles, comptes-rendus et traductions (dont certains font encore aujourd’hui l’objet de rééditions). L’article commence par retracer l’évolution de la « platonolâtrie » georgéenne (en s’appuyant, entre autres, sur des matériaux d’archive), puis en décèle les principes herméneutiques. Ceux-ci, forgés surtout contre les lectures de P. Natorp et U. von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff, revendiquaient une interprétation volontairement anachronique sans craindre une « fusion des horizons » auto‑justificative : c’est parce qu’ils fréquentaient S. George, l’héritier le plus fidèle et intempestif de l’esprit platonicien, que les georgéens se croyaient plus aptes que les philologues académiques à rendre cet esprit dans leurs travaux. En conclusion, l’article analyse l’impact du Cercle sur les acteurs contemporains et postérieurs des études platoniciennes universitaires. (shrink)

What interests us and claims our attention in Nazism is, essentially, its ideology, in the definition Hannah Arendt has given of this term in her book on The Origins of Totalitarianism. In this work, ideology is defined as the totally self-fulfilling logic of an idea, an idea “by which the movement of history is explained as one consistent process.” “The movement of history and the logical process of this notion,” Arendt continues, “are supposed to correspond to each other, so that (...) whatever happens, happens according to the logic of one ‘idea.’”2Ideology, in other words, interests us and claims our attention insofar as, on the one hand, it always proposes itself as a political explanation of the world, that is, as an explanation of history on the basis of a single concept—the concept of race, for example, or the concept of class—and insofar as, on the other hand, this ideological explanation or conception of the world seeks to be a total explanation or conception. This totality signifies that the explanation is indisputable, leaving neither gaps nor remainders—unlike philosophical thought, from which ideology shamelessly draws the greater part of its resources but which is characterized by a risky, problematic style, what Arendt calls the “insecurity” of philosophical questioning . 2. Werner Jaeger (1888–1961) was at his time the most brilliant and the most influential German classicist. His most important project was a tripartite study that he finally published under the title of Paideia. Die Formung des griechischen Menschen (1933–1947). Paideia was much more than a detailed scholarly book on pedagogy in the ancient world. It was an attempt to interpret the history of ancient thought—from Homeric epics to Attic tragedy and Platonic philosophy—as rooted in the intention to educate (or rather (...) to ‘form’) human beings. And it was the attempt to contribute to a contemporary German movement called ‘Third Humanism’. In this article, I give a critical overview of this work, its strengths and its shortcomings. (shrink)

____Specters of Marx__ is a major new book from the renowned French philosopher Jacques Derrida. It represents his first important statement on Marx and his definitive entry into social and political philosophy. "Specter" is the first noun one reads in _The Manifesto of_ _the Communist Party._ But that's just the beginning. Once you start to notice them, there is no counting all the ghosts, spirits, specters and spooks that crowd Marx's text. If they are to count for something, however, one (...) must question the spectropoetics that Marx allowed to invade his discourse. The third Earl of Shaftesbury was a pivotal figure in eighteenth-century thought and culture. Professor Klein 's study is the first to examine the extensive Shaftesbury manuscripts and offer an interpretation of his diverse writings as an attempt to comprehend contemporary society and politics and, in particular, to offer a legitimation for the new Whig political order established after 1688. As the focus of Shaftesbury's thinking was the idea of politeness, this study involves the first serious examination of the importance (...) of the idea of politeness in the eighteenth century for thinking about society and culture and organising cultural practices. Through politeness, Shaftesbury conceptualised a new kind of public and critical culture for Britain and Europe, and greatly influenced the philosophical and cultural models associated with the European Enlightenment.
