H. van Effenterre apporte un témoignage oculaire sur l'état de la fouille de 1936 au Palais de Mallia, aussitôt après l'enlèvement des épées d'apparat par Chapouthier. Ce témoignage relativise les conclusions chronologiques effectuées aux environs quarante-cinq ans plus tard.

H. et M. van Effenterre présentent un décret inédit des environs de 500 av. J.-C. interdisant l'accueil des étrangers dans la cité de Lyttos qui avait été découvert par N. Platon. Ils en étudient l'alphabet, le dialecte et la syntaxe, et le rapport avec la xénèlasia et la dikè exoulès. Ils y reconnaîtraient la méfiance de la cité contre des rapatriés parmi lesquels l'aristocratie des cosmes chercherait une clientèle, en particulier une main-d'œuvre nécessaire au développement de l'élevage. En effet, (...) un second décret, au verso du document, définit le lieu de rassemblement fixé pour les troupeaux communautaires. Mention est faite des Itaniens et du lieu-dit Dèt(alla) où l'on devrait peut-être retrouver le plateau du Lassithi. Nombreux hapax. (shrink)

Dans la loi constitutionnelle de Dréros, le mot θιοσολοιον ne constitue pas le début du texte, mais, comme il avait été affirmé dans la lre publication, un rajout inséré plus tard. Dans une autre inscription de Dréros, le mot τυπρμηριηια n'est pas de l'étéocrétois, mais doit se lire τ ύπ ρμηρίδια et désigne la partie de la victime qui se trouve «au-dessus de la cuisse», c'est-à-dire la «selle d'agneau».

Réponse aux suggestions de P. Warren sur de possibles « bétyles » à Chryssolakkos et dans la « cour centrale » du Palais en fournissant toutes les observations disponibles. On montre par ailleurs que la cruche du « dépôt de fondation » trouvé par O. Pelon sous la « Résidence » du Palais n'est pas une nouveauté à Mallia : une découverte quasi-identique auprès de la Crypte Hypostyle ôte tout caractère d'indice spécifiquement « palatial » à l'objet.

The much-acclaimed present-day philosophical turn to the letters of Saint Paul points to a profound consonance between ancient and modern thought. Such is the bold claim of this study in which scholars from contemporary continental philosophy, new testamentary studies and ancient philosophy discuss with each other the meaning Paul's terms pistis, faith. In this volume, this theme discusses in detail the threefold relation between Paul and continental thought, the Graeco-Roman world, and political theology. It is shown that pistis does not (...) only concern a mode of knowing, but rather concerns the human ethos or mode of existence as a whole. Moreover, it is shown that the present-day political theological interest in Paul can be seen as an attempt to recuperate Paul’s pistis in this comprehensive sense. Finally, an important discussion concerning the specific ontological implications and background of this reinterpretation of pistis is examined by comparing the ancient ontological commitments to those of the present-day philosophers. Thus, the volume offers an insight in a crucial consonance of ancient and modern thought concerning the question of pistis in Paul while not forgetting to stipulate important differences. (shrink)

Talk by members of executive hospital boards influences the organizational positioning of nurses. Talk is a relational leadership practice. Using a qualitative‐interpretive design we organized focus group meetings wherein members of executive hospital boards (7), nurses (14), physicians (7), and managers (6), from 15 Dutch hospitals, discussed the organizational positioning of nursing during COVID crisis. We found that members of executive hospital boards consider the positioning of nursing in crisis a task of nurses themselves and not as a collective, interdependent, (...) and/or specific board responsibility. Furthermore, members of executive hospital boards talk about the nursing profession as (1) more practical than strategic, (2) ambiguous in positioning, and (3) distinctive from the medical profession. Such talk seemingly contrasts with the notion of interdependence that highlights how actors depend on each other in interaction. Interdependence is central to collaboration in hospital crises. In this paper, therefore, we depart from the members of executive hospital boards as leader and “positioner,” and focus on talk—as a discursive leadership practice—to illuminate leadership and governance in hospitals in crisis, as social, interdependent processes. We present a model of rational behavior by which we characterize business ethical dilemmas as trade-offs between processes and consequences. As an illustration, we formulate the oil industry's business ethical dilemma as a trade-off between a socially detrimental process (emitting greenhouse gases, hence inducing a risk of climate change) and a self-interested consequence (profits). The proposed framework allows us to specify two types of strategies, differing by whether priority is given to the consequences or to the processes. We analyze and (...) illustrate these strategies at both the behavioral and the discursive levels. In particular, communication strategies raise questions about good faith in business argumentation, in the sense that business discourse may or may not be consistent with actual assumptions and/or actual behaviors. We conclude on possible drivers of more ethical business behavior. (shrink)

Carneades is a recently proposed formalism for structured argumentation with varying proof standards, inspired by legal reasoning, but more generally applicable. Its distinctive feature is that each statement can be given its own proof standard, which is claimed to allow a more natural account of reasoning under burden of proof than existing formalisms for structured argumentation, in which proof standards are defined globally. In this article, the two formalisms are formally related by translating Carneades into the ASPIC+ framework for structured (...) argumentation. Since ASPIC+ is defined to generate Dung-style abstract argumentation frameworks, this in effect translates Carneades graphs into abstract argumentation frameworks. For this translation, we prove a formal correspondence and show that certain rationality postulates hold. It is furthermore proved that Carneades always induces a unique Dung extension, which is the same in all of Dung's semantics, allowing us to generalise Carneades to cycle-containing structures. This paper presents a theory of reasoning with evidence in order to determine the facts in a criminal case. The focus is on the process of proof, in which the facts of the case are determined, rather than on related legal issues, such as the admissibility of evidence. In the literature, two approaches to reasoning with evidence can be distinguished, one argument-based and one story-based. In an argument-based approach to reasoning with evidence, the reasons for and against the occurrence of (...) an event, e.g., based on witness testimony, are central. In a story-based approach, evidence is evaluated and interpreted from the perspective of the factual stories as they may have occurred in a case, e.g., as they are defended by the prosecution. In this paper, we argue that both arguments and narratives are relevant and useful in the reasoning with and interpretation of evidence. Therefore, a hybrid approach is proposed and formally developed, doing justice to both the argument-based and the narrative-based perspective. By the formalization of the theory and the associated graphical representations, our proposal is the basis for the design of software developed as a tool to make sense of the evidence in complex cases. As part of the conference commemorating Theoria's 75th anniversary, a round table discussion on philosophy publishing was held in Bergendal, Sollentuna, Sweden, on 1 October 2010.
