Before the end of an error: Giovanni Bianchini’s original flawed treatise on the conversion of stellar coordinates.Glen Van Brummelen - 2020 - Archive for History of Exact Sciences 75 (1):109-124.
In my 2018 article in this journal, I described 15th-century Italian astronomer Giovanni Bianchini’s treatment of the problem of stellar coordinate conversion in his Tabulae primi mobilis, the first correct European solution. In this treatise Bianchini refers to a book he had written previously, containing the same error that had plagued his predecessors’ work on the problem. In this article, we announce the discovery of this earlier treatise. We compare its canons and tables to Bianchini’s later work, noting the places (...)

The end of an error: Bianchini, Regiomontanus, and the tabulation of stellar coordinates.Glen Van Brummelen - 2018 - Archive for History of Exact Sciences 72 (5):547-563.
Giovanni Bianchini’s fifteenth-century Tabulae primi mobilis is a collection of 50 pages of canons and 100 pages of tables of spherical astronomy and mathematical astrology, beginning with a treatment of the conversion of stellar coordinates from ecliptic to equatorial. His new method corrects a long-standing error made by a number of his antecedents, and with his tables the computations are much more efficient than in Ptolemy’s Almagest. The completely novel structure of Bianchini’s tables, here and in his Tabulae magistrales, was (...)

Barriers to Implementing Patient-Centred Care: An Exploration of Guidance Provided by Ontario’s Health Regulatory Colleges.Glen E. Randall, Patricia A. Wakefield, Neil G. Barr & Lynda A. van Dreumel - 2020 - Health Care Analysis 28 (1):62-72.
The philosophy of patient-centred care has become widely embraced but its implementation is dependent on interrelated factors. A factor that has received limited attention is the role of policy tools. In Ontario, one method government can use to promote healthcare priorities is through health regulatory colleges, which set the standard of practice for health professionals. The degree to which government policy in support of patient-centered care has influenced the direction provided by health regulatory colleges to their members, and ultimately impacted (...)

The superassertability theory of truth, inspired by Crispin Wright (1992, 2003), holds that a statement is true if and only if it is superassertable in the following sense: it possesses warrant that cannot be defeated by any improvement of our information. While initially promising, the superassertability theory of truth is vulnerable to a persistent difficulty highlighted by James Van Cleve (1996) and Terrence Horgan (1995) but not properly fleshed out: it is formally illegitimate in a similar sense that unsophisticated epistemic (...)

The awakening to the other: a provocative dialogue with Emmanuel Levinas.Roger Burggraeve (ed.) - 2008 - Dudley, MA: Peeters.
Levinas is a thinker for the future, concerned with the future. He inverts the priority of the declaration of the French Revolution "Freedom, Equality, Brotherhood", by designating "brotherhood" first among modern European society's most cherished values. Levinas sees brotherhood as the fundamental condition of our shared humanity and as the foundation of freedom and equality. Thus, he presents himself as a Western thinker who sets modern thought on its head and at the same time enriches it. His radical view of (...)

Fundamental Issues Regarding the Nature of Technology.Jacob Pleasants, Michael P. Clough, Joanne K. Olson & Glen Miller - 2019 - Science & Education 28 (3-5):561-597.
Science and technology are so intertwined that technoscience has been argued to more accurately reflect the progress of science and its impact on society, and most socioscientific issues require technoscientific reasoning. Education policy documents have long noted that the general public lacks sufficient understanding of science and technology necessary for informed decision-making regarding socioscientific/technological issues. The science–technology–society movement and scholarship addressing socioscientific issues in science education reflect efforts in the science education community to promote more informed decision-making regarding such issues. Is it wrong to say Heidegger developed a metaphysics of technology? It doesn't seem to be so. The distinction he makes between technology and the essence of technology, a distinction that proves to be the core of his philosophy of technology, is clearly a metaphysical one: what appears is rooted in something else that does not appear . This is peculiar, for Heidegger is commonly known of course as a thinker who tenaciously tried to overcome metaphysics. In this paper, I (...)

Distantiatie in de hermeneutiek Van Paul Ricoeur.Gert-jan van der Heiden - 2007 - Bijdragen 68 (3):277-297.
One of the key concepts of Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutics is the notion of distanciation. In this article we show that Ricoeur introduces this notion as a correction of Heidegger’s focus on being-in and Gadamer’s emphasis on belonging . Ricoeur argues that distanciation does not lead to the uprooting of our belonging to a tradition. Rather, distanciation is an integral part of the dynamics that constitutes tradition. We discuss the different senses in which Ricoeur understands distanciation as a positive and productive (...)
