  17. Problems and changes in the empiricist criterion of meaning.Carl G. Hempel - 1950 - 11 Rev. Intern. De Philos 41 (11):41-63.
The fundamental tenet of modern empiricism is the view that all non-analytic knowledge is based on experience. Let us call this thesis the principle of empiricism. [1] Contemporary logical empiricism has added [2] to it the maxim that a sentence makes a cognitively meaningful assertion, and thus can be said to be either true or false, only if it is either (1) analytic or self-contradictory or (2) capable, at least in principle, of experiential test. According to this so-called empiricist criterion (...)

  21. Personal Knowledge: Towards a Post-Critical Philosophy.Michael Polanyi - 1958 - Chicago: University of Chicago Press. Edited by Mary Jo Nye.
In this work the distinguished physical chemist and philosopher, Michael Polanyi, demonstrates that the scientist's personal participation in his knowledge, in both its discovery and its validation, is an indispensable part of science itself. Even in the exact sciences, "knowing" is an art, of which the skill of the knower, guided by his personal commitment and his passionate sense of increasing contact with reality, is a logically necessary part. In the biological and social sciences this becomes even more evident. The (...)

    Seeing Cézanne.Richard Shiff - 1978 - Critical Inquiry 4 (4):769-808.
While different groups of viewers may have sought different values in Cézanne's art, the artist's manner of painting and personality both contributed to the ambiguity of his work. Until the last decade of his life he seldom exhibited, and even then his paintings seemed unfinished. He was generally regarded as an "incomplete" artist and often as a "primitive," one whose art was in some way simple or rudimentary, devoid of the refinements and complexities of his materialistic, industrialized society.1 He was (...)

    Ω-powers and descriptive set theory.Dominique Lecomte - 2005 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 70 (4):1210-1232.
We study the sets of the infinite sentences constructible with a dictionary over a finite alphabet, from the viewpoint of descriptive set theory. Among others, this gives some true co-analytic sets. The case where the dictionary is finite is studied and gives a natural example of a set at level ω of the Wadge hierarchy.

  24. Figures of dialogue: a view from Ludics.Alain Lecomte & Myriam Quatrini - 2011 - Synthese 183 (S1):59-85.
In this paper, we study dialogue as a game, but not only in the sense in which there would exist winning strategies and a priori rules. Dialogue is not governed by game rules like for chess or other games, since even if we start from a priori rules, it is always possible to play with them, provided that some invariant properties are preserved. An important discovery of Ludics is that such properties may be expressed in geometrical terms. The main feature (...)

  28. The of the Earth Goddess Among the Magar of Nepal.Marie Lecomte-Tilouine - 1996 - Diogenes 44 (174):27-44.
The military conquest of the Magarant, the Magar land, took place during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when the Thakuri petty kings and their dependents (priests, artisans, soldiers) fled India to settle there. The Magar resistance appears to have been weak, due to their lack of unity and the alliances the conquerors formed with some of them. The Magar people quickly opted for assimilation into the royal caste of the Thakuri, adopting most of their cultural traits, notably their language and (...)

Basis theorems for non-potentially closed sets and graphs of uncountable borel chromatic number.Dominique Lecomte & Benjamin D. Miller - 2008 - Journal of Mathematical Logic 8 (2):121-162.
We show that there is an antichain basis for neither the class of non-potentially closed Borel subsets of the plane under Borel rectangular reducibility nor the class of analytic graphs of uncountable Borel chromatic number under Borel reducibility.

Parental programming: How can we improve study design to discern the molecular mechanisms?Virginie Lecomte, Neil A. Youngson, Christopher A. Maloney & Margaret J. Morris - 2013 - Bioessays 35 (9):787-793.
The contribution of inherited non‐genetic factors to complex diseases is of great current interest. The ways in which mothers and fathers can affect their offspring's health clearly differ as a result of the intimate interactions between mother and offspring during pre‐ and postnatal life. There is, however, potential for some overlap in mechanisms, particularly epigenetic mechanisms. A small number of epidemiological studies and animal models have investigated the non‐genetic contribution of the parents to offspring health. Discovering new mechanisms of disease (...)

  33. Theoretical implications of the study of numbers and numerals in mundurucu.Pierre Pica & Alain Lecomte - 2008 - Philosophical Psychology 21 (4):507 – 522.
Developing earlier studies of the system of numbers in Mundurucu, this paper argues that the Mundurucu numeral system is far more complex than usually assumed. The Mundurucu numeral system provides indirect but insightful arguments for a modular approach to numbers and numerals. It is argued that distinct components must be distinguished, such as a system of representation of numbers in the format of internal magnitudes, a system of representation for individuals and sets, and one-to-one correspondences between the numerosity expressed by (...)

How can we recognize potentially ${\bf\pi}^{0}_{\XI}$ subsets of the plane?Dominique Lecomte - 2009 - Journal of Mathematical Logic 9 (1):39-62.
Let ξ ≥ 1 be a countable ordinal. We study the Borel subsets of the plane that can be made [Formula: see text] by refining the Polish topology on the real line. These sets are called potentially [Formula: see text]. We give a Hurewicz-like test to recognize potentially [Formula: see text] sets.

    We prove that, for any natural number \, we can find a finite alphabet \ and a finitary language L over \ accepted by a one-counter automaton, such that the \-power $$\begin{aligned} L^\infty :=\{ w_0w_1\ldots \in \Sigma ^\omega \mid \forall i\in \omega ~~w_i\in L\} \end{aligned}$$is \-complete. We prove a similar result for the class \.

Le pouvoir moderne et le dispositif asilaire selon Michel Foucault et Marcel Gauchet.Olivier Lecomte - 2015 - Dialogue 54 (2):313-331.
The concept of modernity, according to Michel Foucault and Marcel Gauchet, is closely related to the idea of a new form of power. While Foucault analyzes power from within, Gauchet develops a theory of power based on a relation to externality. Both perceive the asylum as one of the most representative settings of this modern form of power. I show that Gauchet’s model preserves Foucault’s contribution, while giving it a new significance.
