The book covers basic isomorphism invariants: families of type realized in a model, lattices of elementary substructures and automorphism groups.

This study examines the impact of board of director gender diversity on corporate tax aggressiveness. Based on a sample of 418 U.S. firms covering the 2006–2009 period, our ordinary least squares regression results show a negative and statistically significant association between female representation on the board and tax aggressiveness after controlling for endogeneity. Our results are consistent across several measures of tax aggressiveness and additional robustness checks.

Two crucial concepts of the methodology and philosophy of mathematics are considered: proof and truth. We distinguish between informal proofs constructed by mathematicians in their research practice and formal proofs as defined in the foundations of mathematics (in metamathematics). Their role, features and interconnections are discussed. They are confronted with the concept of truth in mathematics. Relations between proofs and truth are analysed.

This study examines the impact of corporate tax avoidance on board of directors and chief executive officer reputation. Our regression results show that when firms engage in tax avoidance, both directors and CEOs, on average, are rewarded by improvements in their reputations as proxied by an increased number of outside board seats. In particular, both independent directors and non-CEO executive directors undergo positive changes in reputation. We also find that CEOs of tax-aggressive firms experience enhanced reputations by gaining extra board (...) seats. Our main regression results hold based on additional analyses. Overall, this study provides important empirical evidence confirming an association between tax avoidance and the individual reputations of directors and CEOs. (shrink)

We develop multi-conclusion nested sequent calculi for the fifteen logics of the intuitionistic modal cube between IK and IS5. The proof of cut-free completeness for all logics is provided both syntactically via a Maehara-style translation and semantically by constructing an infinite birelational countermodel from a failed proof search. Interestingly, the Maehara-style translation for proving soundness syntactically fails due to the hierarchical structure of nested sequents. Consequently, we only provide the semantic proof of soundness. The countermodel construction used to prove completeness (...) required a completely novel approach to deal with two independent sources of non-termination in the proof search present in the case of transitive and Euclidean logics. The following article is an addendum to Reinhardt Brandt’s article included above, written for the needs of Polish readers. Brandt discusses the famous Longinus’ treatise while including its entire historic context. The substantial threads including the specifics Longinus’ piece as a treatise on the field of aesthetics that were contained in Brandt’s work have been, on the other hand, reminded in this article.

The article is an attempt not only to refer again, but also interpret some pivotal elements of the concept of sublimity presented in Kant’s Critique of Judgment. Kant presented a source interpretation of the category referring to sublime phenomena of nature or simple works of art, but such delineating of the field of interest was caused by the epistemological aims of the third Critique. In this presentation I would like to widen Kant’s interpretation of the conception and add some references (...) of the sense of freedom to the content of psychological character. This problems are a subject of intensive research among Torun aestheticians. (shrink)

Philosophe polonais et disciple d'Edmund Husserl, Ingarden envisage la relation a l'oeuvre d'art comme une experience menee dans un echange reciproque et continu avec l'objet. Il defend ainsi une esthetique qui n'est ni purement subjectiviste en ce qu'elle n'est en rien reductible aux sentiments emotionnels d'un sujet, ni purement objectiviste en ce que les determinations reelles et materielles de l'oeuvre donnee exigent la participation intentionnelle du spectateur pour s'accomplir en manifestation intuitive concrete. Objet intentionnel par excellence, l'oeuvre d'art se tient (...) entre monde reel et monde spirituel, entre realite et jeu imaginaire. Elle se donne au spectateur comme une invitation a deployer son activite intentionnelle et, ce faisant, a participer a la vie de l'oeuvre a travers l'histoire de ses receptions. Les textes reunis ici offrent un large panorama des preoccupations esthetiques d'Ingarden. Ils presentent les principaux resultats de ses recherches theoriques concernant la nature des vecus et des objets esthetiques, ainsi que des applications concretes des analyses ontologiques menees sur differents types d'oeuvres d'art (litterature, peinture, architecture et film). L'ensemble des analyses ontologiques et phenomenologiques y est egalement toujours adosse a la question des valeurs, et de l'evaluation artistique ainsi qu'a la recherche d'un fondement objectif des valeurs.
