A survey of three types of cell population models is presented in this paper. The main issue in all the surveyed words is whether or not there exists astable type distribution (s.t.d.). In the last few years, many efforts were directed towards describing the most general models which still exhibits.t.d. Progress made in the case ofsize density models are discussed. A slightly extended version of atime continous daughter cell model, studied in Arino et al. (1991), is presented. From there, we expose the processes of constitution of the field in Chile as a history crossed by the need of importations and intersections that contest the clear delimitation of its boundaries, what makes necessary the attention of the politics of readings that the book avoid. A partir de aquí, se presentarán los conceptos de lenguaje y sujeto desde el psicoanálisis de Jacques Lacan, heredero y crítico del pensamiento saussureano, con el objetivo de realizar una confrontación entre ambas teorías, además del esclarecimiento inicial necesario para futuras discusiones. The empirical relationship between a firm’s social performance and its financial performance is still not well established in the literature. Despite more than 30 years of research and more than 100 empirical studies on the issue, the results are still mixed. We argue that the heterogeneous results found in previous studies are not due exclusively to problems related with the measurement instruments or the samples used. Instead, we posit that a more fundamental problem related with the endogeneity of social strategic (...) decisions could be driving most of the empirical findings. We show that, using a panel data of 658 firms from 1991 to 2005, how some of the results found in previous research change, and some are even reversed when endogeneity is properly taken into account. Spanish fascists held power for a lengthy period, yet their antisemitism remains underresearched. This article, drawing on periodicals and archival documentation, specifically examines the early years of the Falange until 1945. The period was characterised by a significant surge in antisemitic sentiment in Spain, accompanied by a growing presence of the alleged ‘Judaeo-Masonic conspiracy’. Representing the first in-depth approach in English, the text is divided into four parts. The first serves as an introduction to the outbreak of antisemitism and conspiracy (...) theories within the political cultures of the Spanish illiberal right following the advent of democracy in 1931. The second focuses on fascism and its four most prominent figures up to 1936. The third analyses the Falange’s pronounced antisemitism during the Spanish Civil War, exploring both its internal and external influences. The fourth and final part addresses the fervently antisemitic stance of the Falange during the decisive years of the Second World War, navigating the tensions between Nazi antisemitic racism and Catholic anti-racist antisemitism. There is a need of further research to understand how social capital in the organization can be fostered. Existing literature focuses on the design of reciprocity norms, procedures and stability employment practices as the main levers of social capital in the workplace. Complementary to these mechanisms, this paper explores the impact of ethical managerial behaviour on the development of social capital. We argue that a managerial behaviour based on the true concern for the well-being of employees, as well as their (...) motivational and ethical development, can be particularly important for the generation of social capital in the organization. It is suggested that manager's behaviour should be based on three principles: following examplary behaviour, helping the employees to value the consequences of their actions in other persons, and not betraying employee's trust. When the manager conforms to those principles, he can ease the process through which employees develop associability and identification-based trust with the firm, the two main components of 'Organizational Social Capital'. Bringing ethics into the debate of social capital creation seems to us fundamental, as social capital in the firm is likely to be influenced by the ethical and motivational development of its members. This paper presents a graffito written after firing on a Samian-ware bowl dated to the turn of the first and second centuries c.e., which seems to contain part of a hexameter included in the well-known anthology Carmina XII sapientum, the composition of which has recently been attributed to the Christian author Lactantius.

Hospitality can be considered a key institution in the social relationships in the ancient Mediterranean. To identify the people involved in a hospitality agreement, in certain contexts small objects were used in a similar way to a password, which the Greeks called symbolon and the Romans tessera hospitalis. We know how the latter were used thanks to Plautus' Poenulus. At least 64 pieces are currently known which may be identified as tesserae hospitales. All come from the Western Mediterranean. The majority (...) contain brief inscriptions, written in Etruscan, Latin, Greek, or Celtiberian. They share a series of common features, which impart a clear family resemblance beyond geographic, cultural, or linguistic borders. (shrink)

Ethics has recently gained prominence in debates surrounding social capital creation. Despite the significant theoretical progress in this field, it still lacks empirical research. The goal of this study is to empirically explore the ethical leadership of supervisors as an antecedent of the firm’s social capital. We build on social learning theory to argue that employees can learn standards of appropriate behavior by observing the behavior of role models. By displaying and enforcing ethical behavior, supervisors can facilitate the process through (...) which employees learn to feel empathy toward others and establish profound affective relationships with them. Data were collected from 408 Spanish, French, and Portuguese part-time MBA students. Using structural equation modeling techniques, we show that the ethical leadership of supervisors exerts a significant influence on the structural, relational, and cognitive dimensions of social capital. The Art of War application to education is about solving problems to improve student and school success. The Art of War describes the significance of a leader and his knowledge and prudent application of the strategies. At the core of theses strategies is the non-negotiable moral purpose of the leader to be reinforced by other fine qualities as wisdom, commitment, discipline, and courage.

There is a need for further research to understand how social capital in the workplace can be promoted. This article studies the generation of social capital from a comprehensive perspective that integrates ethics and general management. We propose the concept of “ethical work context” as an influential antecedent of the social capital in the firm. The ethical work context, which is aligned with the “humanizing culture” approach proposed by Melé ( Journal of Business Ethics 45 (1), 3–14, 2003a ), allows (...) a broader comprehension of the concrete management practices and organizational dynamics that generate organizational social capital. It is argued that social capital, understood as a by-product of the ethical work context, results both from organizational design and ongoing managerial activity. Creating an ethical work context brings ethics and social capital into the realm of the general manager; a figure that has remained absent from the social capital literature. (shrink)

Ethics has recently gained importance in the debate over social capital creation. The goal of this study is to empirically examine the ethical work context of the firm as an antecedent of the firm’s internal social capital. We build on person–situation interactionist theory to argue that individuals can learn standards of appropriate behavior induced by the ethical work context in which they are embedded. By creating an ethical work context, managers can facilitate the process through which employees learn to feel (...) empathy toward others and establish profound affective relationships with them. Data were collected from 1,817 individuals in 36 business units of 7 Spanish, French, and Portuguese corporations. Using structural equation and hierarchical linear modeling techniques, our results reveal three phenomena. First, we show that a business unit’s ethical work context exerts significant influence on the structural, relational, and cognitive dimensions of internal social capital. Second, the managerial practices that constitute the ethical work context are not equally important across the seven corporations; in particular, managerial practices are more influential in those corporations that belong to knowledge-intensive industries. Third, a business unit’s internal social capital is influenced not only by the business unit’s ethical work context, but also by the ethical work context of the corporation to which it belongs. Nuestro trabajo ofrece algunas claves de lectura del proceso por el cual fue posible que la actividad de los tribunales de justicia, a comienzos de los años '90 en Latinoamérica en general y en Argentina de manera significativa, adquiriese una relevancia y una consideración singular respecto al ejercicio del poder político. Este fenómeno, habitualmente denominado "judicialización de la política", supone una tendencia a procesar y dar respuesta a conflictos de índole política, a través de instituciones judiciales. En relación a ello, (...) nos interesa mostrar las interconexiones, puntos de apoyo, resortes a través de los cuales es posible ligarlo al diagrama de relaciones de poder y procesos de subjetivación que caracterizan a la gubernamentalidad neoliberal. Our paper offers some lecture keys on the process through which made it possible the political relevance of judicial activity during the 1990's in Latin American in general, and in Argentina in particular. This phenomenon, commonly known as 'judicialization of politics', supposes a tendency of processing political conflicts through the judiciary. Related to that our paper proposes to show, to make it visible, interconnections and supports through which it is possible to understand it emergence within the diagram of power relations and processes of subjectivation that characterizes neoliberal governmentality. Chr. wird Ovid aus nicht bekanntem Grund von Kaiser Augustus nach Tomis am Schwarzen Meer verbannt, an den Rand der zivilisierten Welt, in eine trostlose Gegend, in der niemand Latein spricht und die er bis zu seinem Tod 17 n. Chr. nicht mehr verlassen wird. Er beginnt, verzweifelte Briefe zu schreiben - man würde sie heute "Offene Briefe" nennen - und diese nach Rom zur Veröffentlichung zu schicken. Sie sind sorgsam dichterisch komponiert, der Stil ist geschliffen (...) und sie haben nur ein Ziel: die öffentliche Meinung in Rom für ihn einzunehmen; erfolglos, wie wir wissen. Gleichwohl sind die Briefe bewegende Dokumente frühester Exil-Literatur. Sie wurden das ganze Mittelalter über gelesen und haben das moderne Bewusstsein Europas mitgeprägt. Die neue Einführung des Münchner Altphilologen Niklas Holzberg und die neuen besonders ausführlichen Anmerkungen zu den unzähligen versteckten Anspielungen in den Briefen untersuchen sorgfältig, was an Ovids Klagen echt und was "Literatur" ist, wo er unter der Unerträglichkeit des Exils tatsächlich leidet und wo er nur gängigen Vorstellungen über die Wildnis am Pontos Ausdruck verleiht. Schon von Kaiser Augustus als Aufforderung zur Unsittlichkeit missverstanden, wurde Ovids "Liebeskunst" bis weit ins 20. Jahrhundert hinein als frivoler Scherz gedeutet und meist dementsprechend übersetzt. Niklas Holzbergs schlichte Wiedergabe des Originals vermeidet die plüschige Stammtischerotik der alten Übersetzungen.

Dieses Werk, nach den "Amores" Ovids zweite Elegiendichtung, ist eine Sammlung von 21 fiktiven Liebesbriefen zumeist von berühmten Frauen des Altertums, in denen sie ihren fernen Geliebten ihr Leid klagen. So schreibt etwa Penelope an Ulixes, Briseis an Achilles, Dido an Aeneas, Medea an Jason oder Sappho an Phaon. Ovid hat für eine zweite Ausgabe die Sammlung um den pikanten Briefwechsel von Paris mit Helena, von Acontius mit Cydippe und, am bekanntesten, von Leander mit Hero erweitert. Seine Charakterbilder, in denen (...) sich auf kleinem Raum ganze Liebesromane spiegeln, sind nicht nur literarische Meisterstücke, sondern auch überzeugende Dokumente mitfühlender Phantasie. Viele Themen der Liebe - Eifersucht, Trennungsschmerz, quälende Erinnerungen, Treue und Verblendung, die verzehrende Sehnsucht nach dem Geliebten - sind in die 21 Gedichte eingegangen und machen die "Heroides" zu einem bedeutsamen poetischen Dokument in der Geschichte menschlicher Liebe.
