Contextualizing Counterintuitiveness: How Context Affects Comprehension and Memorability of Counterintuitive Concepts.M. Afzal Upala, Lauren O. Gonce, Ryan D. Tweney & D. Jason Slone - 2007 - Cognitive Science 31 (3):415-439.
A number of anthropologists have argued that religious concepts are minimally counterintuitive and that this gives them mnemic advantages. This paper addresses the question of why people have the memory architecture that results in such concepts being more memorable than other types of concepts by pointing out the benefits of a memory structure that leads to better recall for minimally counterintuitive concepts and by showing how such benefits emerge in the real‐time processing of comprehending narratives such as folk tales. This (...)

The Shape of This Wonder? Consecrated Science and New Cosmology Affects.Courtney O'Dell-Chaib - 2019 - Zygon 54 (2):387-395.
In response to Lisa Sideris's provocative new book Consecrating Science: Wonder, Knowledge and the Natural World and in conversation with voices from feminist technoscience, this article challenges the deracinated wonder of new cosmology encounters in two senses. First, by tracing how it is uprooted from critical perspectives on scientific knowledge production. And second, by contending deracinated wonder is ripped from cultural and historical contexts thus erasing embodied inequalities. Deracinated wonder attached to uncritical forms of science, I argue, solidifies new cosmology (...)

“The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar”: Undead Bodies and Medical Technology.Sarah O’Dell - 2020 - Journal of Medical Humanities 41 (2):229-242.
This paper examines the relationship between medical technology and liminal states of “undeath” as presented in “The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar” and the real-life case of Jahi McMath, who was maintained on life support for over four years following a diagnosis of brain death. Through this juxtaposition, “Valdemar” comes to function as a modern fable, an uneasy herald of medical technology’s potential to create liminal states between life and death. The ability to transgress these boundaries bears a (...)

Curbside consultation re-imagined: Borrowing from the conflict management toolkit.M. Edelstein Lauren, J. Lynch John, O. Mokwunye Nneka & G. DeRenzo Evan - 2010 - HEC Forum 22 (1):41-49.
Curbside ethics consultations occur when an ethics consultant provides guidance to a party who seeks assistance over ethical concerns in a case, without the consultant involving other stakeholders, conducting his or her own comprehensive review of the case, or writing a chart note. Some have argued that curbside consultation is problematic because the consultant, in focusing on a single narrative offered by the party seeking advice, necessarily fails to account for the full range of moral perspectives. Their concern is that (...)

Classroom discussion practices that can lead to reasoned participation by all students are presented and described by the authors. Their research emphasizes the careful orchestration of talk and tasks in academic learning. Parallels are drawn to the philosophical work on deliberative discourse and the fundamental goal of equipping all students to participate in academically productive talk. These practices, termed Accountable TalkSM, emphasize the forms and norms of discourse that support and promote equity and access to rigorous academic learning. They have (...)

Why might poor sleep quality lead to depression? A role for emotion regulation.Kimberly O’Leary, Lauren M. Bylsma & Jonathan Rottenberg - 2017 - Cognition and Emotion 31 (8):1698-1706.
Disordered sleep is strongly linked to future depression, but the reasons for this link are not well understood. This study tested one possibility – that poorer sleep impairs emotion regulation, which over time leads to increased depressive symptoms. Our sample contained individuals with a wide range of depression symptoms, who were followed clinically over six months and reassessed for changes in depressive symptom levels. As predicted, maladaptive ER mediated both cross-sectional and prospective relationships between poor sleep quality and depression symptoms. (...)

Non-static framework for understanding adaptive designs: an ethical justification in paediatric trials.Michael O. S. Afolabi & Lauren E. Kelly - 2021 - Journal of Medical Ethics 48 (11):825-831.
Many drugs used in paediatric medicine are off-label. There is a rising call for the use of adaptive clinical trial designs in responding to the need for safe and effective drugs given their potential to offer efficiency and cost-effective benefits compared with traditional clinical trials. ADs have a strong appeal in paediatric clinical trials given the small number of available participants, limited understanding of age-related variability and the desire to limit exposure to futile or unsafe interventions. Although the ethical value (...)

A Neuroadaptive Cognitive Model for Dealing With Uncertainty in Tracing Pilots' Cognitive State.Oliver W. Klaproth, Marc Halbrügge, Laurens R. Krol, Christoph Vernaleken, Thorsten O. Zander & Nele Russwinkel - 2020 - Topics in Cognitive Science 12 (3):1012-1029.
When people are performing a task, it is hard to know whether they are about to make a mistake. Klaproth, Halbrügge, Krol, Vernaleken, Zander, and Russwinkel address this by recording EEG signals while people are performing a flight control task, and show that by examining the EEG signal they can determine when people failed to notice particular stimuli, which could lead to better assistive tools.

  31. An Obligation to Help?Sarah Smolyansky, John H. Adams, May F. Affre, Jaafar Al Fakih, Haider S. Albassam, Daniel O. Asparouhov, Jessica A. Dudley, Joseph Rodriguez & Lauren Ross - unknown
Is helping those whose subsistence needs are not meet a matter of charity or an obligation? What role should ordinary citizens of developed nations play? In a globalized world, the causes, connections, and responsibilities become complicated. Agriculture subsidies that keep food prices low for many in relatively rich countries may, for example, negatively impact poor farmers in developing countries. Students in Ethics/Philosophy 352 report on their project examining whether, and to what extent, a true obligation to aid exists.

Exploring the Experiences and Well-Being of Australian Rio Olympians During the Post-Olympic Phase: A Qualitative Study.Andrew Bennie, Courtney C. Walton, Donna O’Connor, Lauren Fitzsimons & Thomas Hammond - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Research about the Olympic Games has primarily focused on preparing athletes for competition. Less attention has been paid to the post-Olympic-phase and athlete well-being during this time. This study explored Australian Olympic athletes’ experiences following the conclusion of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, including the factors that may have contributed to or challenged their well-being during this time. Eighteen athletes participated in semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis revealed that when Olympic performance appraisal met prior expectations, when athletes planned for a (...)

In the first part are studied the typology and the rhetorical tradition of the letter, then is discussed the question of translations attributed to Guillelmus de Luna or de Lunis or Lunense, and are advanced hypotheses on the translations that Manfredi of Swabia sent at the University of Paris, probably in 1263.In questo saggio viene edita (...)
