Der Artikel beschäftigt sich mit der Rolle, die der Fanatismus in der Philosophie und Psychologie Friedrich Nietzsches spielt. Er wirft die These auf, dass Fanatismus mit Ressentiment und Nihilismus verbunden ist und interpretiert den deutschen Denker in folgendem Sinne: Fanatismus ist der Abwehrmechanismus eines Menschen, der Ressentiment empfindet. Durch ein Einsatz dieses Abwehrmechanismus schützt sich der Mensch vor den Konsequenzen der nicht gut durchgeführten Fälschung der Werte auf den Weg seiner ressentimentalen Umwertung- d. h. vor dem Nihilismus.

The kernel of this volume is an English translation of Jan Łukasiewicz’s classic work on the concept of cause (1906). It is the starting point for analytical considerations on causality of two generations of philosophers belonging to the tradition of the Lvov-Warsaw School.

Oceny moralnej postępowania można dokonywać z dwóch różnych punktów widzenia. Jeden styl oceniania można nazwać „etyką uniwersalną” lub „etyką czystego sumienia”. Drugi styl można nazwać„partykularyzmem etycznym” czyli „etyką samokontroli.” Etyka pierwszego rodzaju zazwyczaj wykorzystuje pojęcia takie jak obowiązek, błąd, odpowiedzialność, wstyd, kara, pokuta, przebaczenie. Etyka drugiego rodzaju zwykle używa pojęć takich jak przywiązanie, niepowodzenie, ponoszenie odpowiedzialności, obwinianie, żal, poprawa, naprawienie szkód, zapomnienie. W etyce uniwersalnej obowiązki są czymś rzeczywistym i niezależnym. W tym sensie jest ona absolutystyczna. Co prawda etyka partykularystyczna (...) również uznaje niektóre obowiązki za naturalne i bezwarunkowe, lecz są to głównie obowiązki wobec własnych dzieci lub rodziców, współmałżonków czy współplemieńców, a nie obowiązki wobec całego świata lub wszystkich jednostek ludzkich. Etyka partykularyzmu rozumie obowiązki w świetle konkretnych relacji między jednostkami, ról społecznych lub zawodowych, dobrowolnie zaciągniętych zobowiązań. Etyka uniwersalistyczna brzmi sztucznie i retorycznie we wspólnocie jednostek, które darzą się wzajemnym szacunkiem, są zdolne do otwartego porozumiewania się z jednostkami proponującymi niepopularne punkty widzenia, są tolerancyjni i akceptują pluralizm opinii. Z drugiej strony hierarchiczna wspólnota mocno wspierająca przyjęty porządek społeczny i moralny, wroga jednostkom, które podkreślają swoje przekonania, nie może zaakceptować etyki pluralizmu bez utraty swej spoistości i funkcjonalności. Wybór między tymi dwoma rodzajami etyki jest przeto trudny w społeczeństwie, któremu brak wspólnych standardów tolerancji i która zachowuje hierarchię społeczną autorytetu, który uległ erozji. Two principles are proposed, which according to the author can help solve conflicts of interests between men and animals: Z1: “Whoever increases probability of causing pain to others should by the same fraction increase the probability of his suffering comparable pain”, and Z2: “If the product of the probability of causing same pain and the amount of that pain is constant for two acts it is morally irrelevant, which of the two acts is performed”.

Following a suggestion of S. Polgar health has been discussed as the “lack of illness” and “élan vital”. The choice between these two conceptions is said to belong to biology, medicine and sociology. It is feasible that these sciences will be able some day to find out if there is a non-specific and sufficiently general defence mechanism against various diseases, and if so, the concept of “élan vital” will have been shown to be more appropriate, if not, the concept of (...) “lack of illness” will have to be given priority. The article tries to find an answer to the question: When should we help, and how much sacrifice should we make while helping? Some opinion of Seneca, Bacon, Hume, Kant, Sidgwick and Mill are quoted – either pertaining directly to that question or touching upon subjects closely related to it. These opinions, together with an analysis of some examples, help to formulate eleven principles which may come in handy whenever we wonder how much help can be expected of us in (...) particular situations. These eleven principles are not enough to find answers to all questions that might arise in such situations. Neither are they sufficient to find a solution to the query, how much we should do in common to bring help to those who need it. It seems therefore that the range of help in need should be determined by the individual and subjective considerations, such as benevolence, spontaneous sympathy, love or goodness, and not by unbiased, ethical arguments. But if this solution is right the problem of help in need is largely removed from the sphere of ethical considerations. (shrink)

It is a fairly widespread conviction that conscience offers not only a yardstick for moral evaluations but constitutes a cognitive faculty that helps one learn something about the world. If so much is true, and, as it seems to be the case with Henryk Jankowski, one is equipped with a socialist conscience, the resulting position is equally informed by certain evaluative and epistemological premises. A conscientious socialist sees the world as a vast terrain of opportunities that can be used to (...) make the world a socially better world. This attitude can be very strong, deep rooted, intransigent and good natured. It may sometimes desensitize its representative to the implications of many facts that are incompatible with his vision of the future, but it can also make him a loyal, ingenious, honest and tireless defender of the common good. An example of Henryk Jankowski is adduced, on the seventieth anniversary of his birth, as a particularly admirable embodiment of the socialistic ideals, motivated by ethical rather than political reasons. It is a belief of the author that A Theory of Justice by John Rawls is one of the most fundamental works in moral philosophy written in the 20th century. The principal merit of the book is found in a conceptual framework for a systematic discussion of the issues arising in moral philosophy, political philosophy, and legal philosophy. These discussions lead to the formulation of interrelated criteria of rightness for jurisdiction, legislation, constitutional provisions, uncodified practices and behaviour of individuals. However, (...) the criteria offered by Rawls appear defective in certain conditions. They cannot fully support the principles of liberty and the principles of justice, nor the particular enactments contained in the just constitution. (shrink)

The Twin Towers were destroyed by Muslim fanatics. Their inability to perceive the repulsive aspect of their act is remarkable and requires a philosophical interpretation. Obviously, religious beliefs can not be tested on empirical grounds or by logical arguments. On the other hand it would be wrong to assume that every religious conviction is as credible as any other. The author tries to separate innocuous religious beliefs from insane claims by arguing that the most reliable criterion of religious plausibility can (...) be derived from Plato’s Phaedrus and the story of two horses, one white and one black, pulling the chariot of our souls. The white horse stands for saintliness, the black for sin. One can not do much more to make the distinction between the safe and uplifting aspect of religion and the dangerous and irresponsible aspect of faith more precise and specific. Terrorism is a deviation that arises within a religion where this distinction has been completely confused, where goodness is identified with a blind and unconditional submission to one group of religious adherents and evil with distancing oneself from the group. Social and political loyalty has replaced religious loyalty. So narrow an interpretation of can not be reconciled with an impartial concept of sin and righteousness. (shrink)

The authors present the main ideas of the computer-assisted proof of Mischaikow and Mrozek that chaos is really present in the Lorenz equations. Methodological consequences of this proof are examined. It is shown that numerical calculations can constitute an essential part of mathematical proof not only in the discrete mathematics but also in the mathematics of continua.
