When it comes to cheating in higher education, business school students have often been accused of being the worst offenders; if true, this may be a contributing factor in the kinds of fraud that have plagued the business community in recent years. We examined the issue of cheating in the business school by surveying 268 students in business and other professional schools on their attitudes about, and experiences with, cheating. We found that while business school students actually cheated no more (...) or less than students in other professional schools, their attitudes on what constitutes cheating are more lax than those of other professional school students. Additionally, we found that serious cheaters across all professional schools were more likely to be younger and have a lower grade point average. (shrink)

Although scholarship in the social construction of technology has contributed much to illuminating technological development, most work using this theoretical approach is committed to an agency-centered approach. SCOT scholars have made only limited contributions to illustrating the influence of social structures. In this article, the authors argue for the importance of structural concepts to understanding technological development. They summarize the SCOT conceptual framework defined by Trevor Pinch and Wiebe Bijker and survey some of the methodological and explanatory difficulties that arise (...) with their approach. Then the authors present concepts from organizational sociology and political economy that illuminate structural influences in shaping phenomena of interest to SCOT scholars. These structural concepts can be applied to the study of the design, development, and transformation of technology. The authors conclude that the limited amount of scholarship on structural factors in the social shaping of technological development presents numerous opportunities for research. (shrink)

In this study, we examine differences in cheating behaviors in higher education between two countries, namely the United States and the Czech Republic, which differ in many social, cultural and political aspects. We compare a recent (2011) Czech Republic survey of 291 students to that of 268 students in the US (Klein et al., 2007). For all items surveyed, CR students showed a higher propensity to engage in cheating. Additionally, we found more forms of serious cheating present in the Czech (...) sample. In all cases, the differences between the US and Czech samples were statistically significant. (shrink)

In den einzelnen Beiträgen der Erich Heintel gewidmeten Festschrift spiegeln sich dessen Auffassung von Philosophie als «perenner» Prinzipienwissenschaft europäischer Tradition. Sie reflektiert die Voraussetzungsproblematik alles Erkennens von der empirischen Einzelforschung bis hin zur Theologie sowie Sinn und Grenze ihres eigenen Vorgehens. Ontologisches Voraussetzungswissen der antik-mittelalterlichen Form- bzw. Substanzmetaphysik und neuzeitlichen Transzendentalphilosophie müssen in ihrem Sinnanspruch ebenso unterschieden wie auch miteinander «versöhnt» werden, um den Menschen in seiner Einheit als «daseiende Transzendentalität» erfassen zu können. Die Frage nach dem Begriff des Menschen (...) ist inneres Organisationsprinzip der vereinigten Studien, die sich in systematischer Differenzierung mit Fragen der theoretischen, praktischen und poietischen Philosophie, zuletzt aber auch mit theologischen Problemstellungen beschäftigen. Intrachromosomal recombination between direct repeats can occur either as gene conversion events, which maintain exactly the number of repeat units, or as deletions, which reduce the number of repeat units. Gene conversions are classical recombination events that utilize the standard chromosome recombination machinery. Spontaneous deletions between direct repeats are generally recA‐independent in E. coli and RAD52‐independent in S. cerevisiae. This independence from the major recombination genes does not mean that deletions form through a nonrecombinational process. Deletions have been suggested to (...) result from sister chromatid exchange at the replication fork in a recA‐independent process. The same type of exchange is proposed to be RAD52‐independent in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. RAD52‐dependent events encompass all events that involve the initial steps of a recombination reaction, which include strand invasion to form a heteroduplex intermediate. (shrink)
