    Is Church Unity Possible Today?Jill Raitt - 2015 - Philosophy and Theology 27 (2):493-498.
Thirty years after the publication of Unity of the Churches: An Actual Possibility by Karl Rahner and Heinrich Fries, our panel was asked whether we consider the unity of the churches an actual possibility today. I sketch an answer to this question with the help of Michael Kinnamon, past Executive Secretary of the World Council of Churches and from 2007–2011 the General Secretary of the National Council of Churches in the USA, and Cardinal Walter Kasper, President of the Pontifical Council (...)

    Church Unity and Church Mission. [REVIEW]J. W. R. - 1964 - Review of Metaphysics 17 (4):630-630.
A lively and sympathetic critique of the ecumenical movement, emphasizing that unity is a Christian goal only as it contributes to the Church's ability to fulfill its mission. There is a good discussion of the significance of Roman Catholic and Orthodox participation in what was originally a Protestant movement. Marty's thesis is that enough unity has been attained now to get on with the mission.--R. J. W.

A Patroness for the Council? Building a Movement for Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Aid of Church Unity.Patrick J. Hayes - 2018 - In Vladimir Latinovic, Gerard Mannion & O. F. M. Welle (eds.), Catholicism Opening to the World and Other Confessions: Vatican Ii and its Impact. Springer Verlag. pp. 291-307.
This chapter examines a little-known movement to make the Our Lady of Perpetual Help icon the patroness of the proceedings of the Second Vatican Council. Begun by American Redemptorists, it sought to integrate a Marian piety into the conciliar ethos, but one that was decidedly cross-cultural and ecumenical. Explicit in its mission for unity between Roman Catholics and the separated churches of the East, the movement promoted the icon as the key to repairing centuries-old wounds. Insofar as 2015 begins the (...)

Synodical unity in the Dutch Reformed Church in 1911 - an attempt that failed.Pieter J. Strauss - 2022 - HTS Theological Studies 78 (4):1-9.
In 1862 the Supreme Court of the Cape Coloy terminated the synodical unity of the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa. Delegates of congregations outside the Colony could no longer represent them in the Cape or Mother Synod. The court used Ordonnance 7 of 1843 of the Colony. In 1907 the newly founded Federal Council of Dutch Reformed Churches decided to lead an effort in the Church to replace this federal bond with a closer synodical bond. The Council (...)

    The Unity of the Churches.Jon Nilson - 1993 - Philosophy and Theology 8 (1):3-23.
This paper contends that the dispute between Avery Dulles and Karl Rahner on the prospects for the unity of the churches is not fundamentally theological. Instead, their sharply contrasting perceptions of contemporary culture lead them to construe the ecumenical imperative quite differendy. If this analysis is correct, what may be most divisive between and within the churches is not faith or doctrine at all but different readings of “the signs of the times.” If so, ecumenists will have to undertake cultural (...)

Unity and Diversity in the Church: Transformed identities and the peace of Christ in Ephesians.William S. Campbell - 2008 - Transformation: An International Journal of Holistic Mission Studies 25 (1):15-31.
The question the author explores in this paper is whether Paul's stance on retaining one's ethnic identity which eventually was lost when the church became predominantly gentile was already lost by the time the letter to the Ephesians was written around 90 CE at the latest. The point is that Christ does not merely bring peace of mind, psychological well-being, but shalom, the total health and well-being of being right with God and finding peace even with enemies. It is (...)

The mystery and the unity of the Church: Considerations from an Eastern Orthodox perspective.Nicolae V. Moșoiu - 2021 - HTS Theological Studies 77 (4):1-11.
This article attempts an approach to discuss the mystery and the unity of the church and firstly, it underlined that the church cannot have a formal definition as the divine life extended from Christ's resurrected body into those who believe and receive the Holy Mysteria. At the same time, the process of becoming part of the church is a mystical one. In order for life in Christ to be possible, Christ must be formed in the human being. (...)

Lutheran perspectives on the unity of the church.Dieter H. Reinstorf - 2017 - HTS Theological Studies 73 (1).
From personal experience, this article shares to what degree the Faculty of Theology at the University of Pretoria was and continues to be a gateway to the future, challenging among others the divisions that characterise the Church of Christ worldwide. The article argues that for the 16th-century Reformers the unity of the church was a given and that the confessions were written to establish such a unity through agreement in confession and joint rejection of false doctrines. However, such (...)

“Confessional” Nonviolence and the Unity of the Church: Can Christians Square the Circle?Gerald W. Schlabach - 2014 - Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics 34 (1):125-144.
Both within and among churches that have traditionally held to just war teaching, various formulas in the last fifty years have allowed for the recognition that Christian pacifism is a respectable tradition alongside just war. It is not obvious, however, how historic peace churches can officially reciprocate with the same kind of ecumenical generosity by recognizing the legitimacy of the just war tradition. To do so, after all, would seem to require giving up their very claim to the confessional status (...)

A continued racial character of some of the Gereformeerde Kerke in South Africa: Strategic moves evading reconciliation and unity of churches in post-apartheid South Africa.Elijah Baloyi - 2018 - HTS Theological Studies 74 (1).
The quest for liberation of all South Africans from past racial divides since the inception of democratic government has been prioritised for more than 24 years now. Although this is an ongoing process and some achievements have been made to this end, it is yet evident that the impact of racism and apartheid still influence many lives both in and outside the churches. The Gereformeerde Kerke in South Africa is amongst the churches that officially removed the barriers of apartheid to (...)

Jesus Christ said: "Two gentlemen can not serve." He himself, first of all, came to "the fierce bait of Israel", who sent the Apostles to the world, so that they would guide them to those who went to them. Already for St. Paul became apostolic for pagans.

National consciousness, which is primarily a deep awareness of one or another people of its ethnic isolation and originality of historical destiny, is formed under the influence of various objective and subjective factors. Depending on which nationalistic factors are bestowed, distinguish the objectivist and subjectivist theory of the nation.

United Over Meals Divided at the Lord’s Table: Christianity and the Unity of the Church in Africa.J. Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu - 2010 - Transformation: An International Journal of Holistic Mission Studies 27 (1):16-27.
Christianity in Africa owes its massive growth of the last 50 years to the Independent and Pentecostal/ charismatic churches. The relationships between these churches and the older mission-founded churches are strained. Ethnic and social factors contribute to the divisions. Christian unity in Africa will require conversion to Christ. The strong African tradition of communal life is destroyed by external forces and inter-African conflicts in which members of the same churches have fought one another. Healing is only possible through reconciliation, which (...)

It is evident that disunity is a reality wherever we look in the world today. Even within the Body of Christ there is a lack of unity that is appalling. The universal church needs to develop a greater urgency about it and at the same time, do more about it than most are doing. If the universal church comes to a realization that genuine Christian unity is already ‘an established reality and can progressively be realized and brought into (...)

Unification and peace: How were the German churches involved in the search for unity to overcome conflicts of the last decades of the last century?Gerhard Sauter - 2018 - HTS Theological Studies 74 (4):1-8.
This article is a narrative reflection of the author’s perspective on the role of the Church in the unification process of Germany in the last part of the last decade. It is presented from his perspective of being a German citizen, as well a member of the church in Germany. The author situates this experience amidst the political and ideological movements shaping the binary notions ‘East’ and ‘West’.
