    Open-mindedness as a Corrective Virtue.Hassan Alsharif & John Symons - 2021 - Philosophy 96 (1):73-97.
This paper argues that open-mindedness is a corrective virtue. It serves as a corrective to the epistemic vice of confirmation bias. Specifically, open-mindedness is the epistemically virtuous disposition to resist the negative effects of confirmation bias on our ability to reason well and to evaluate evidence and arguments. As part of the defense and presentation of our account, we explore four discussions of open-mindedness in the recent literature. All four approaches have strengths and shed light on aspects of the virtue (...)

    Neoliberalizing news discourse: A semio-discursive reading of news gamification.Rania Magdi Fawzy - 2019 - Discourse and Communication 13 (5):497-515.
Gamified news is a clear example of contemporary convergent practices which conflate the functionalities of formerly separate entities, video games and journalism. This practice marks a shift in the journalistic norms, positioning journalism and news users within the neoliberal paradigm. In this view, the study proposes a discursive approach to examine how gamified news discourse is colonized by the neoliberal values of marketization and commodification. The analysis takes a case study of Pirate Fishing: An Interactive Investigation, a gamified news launched (...)

    Hegal's Internationalism: World History and Exclusion.Fawzi Boubia - 1997 - Metaphilosophy 28 (4):417-432.
Philosophies sometimes claim international authority by claiming to be the expression of rationality that is universal in character or validity. This paper attacks Hegel’s internationalism of universal spirit and world history for unjustly excluding the philosophical value of non‐European cultures and races: Africans, Asians, Arabs, Jews, and Native Americans. Hegel’s Eurocentric internationalism also displays a particularly strong nationalist pride in German philosophical superiority. One cannot simply excuse the prejudices of Hegel’s historical context for his exclusionary attitudes. For Hegel’s contemporary Goethe (...)

  7. Universal Literature and Otherness.Fawzi Boubia & Jeanne Ferguson - 1988 - Diogenes 36 (141):76-101.
Rapid developments in science, technology and means of communication offer man possibilities for dialogue that up until now have been undreamed-of. It must be undeniably admitted, however, that we live in a world dominated by fear of the other, fanaticism, racism and every kind of conflict. This is why we have thought it useful to reactualize the Goethian conceptions of universal literature and otherness, conceptions that, coming from the generosity of a humanist and appreciator of the other, could help us (...)

Prediction Approaches for Smart Cultivation: A Comparative Study.Amitabha Chakrabarty, Nafees Mansoor, Muhammad Irfan Uddin, Mosleh Hmoud Al-Adaileh, Nizar Alsharif & Fawaz Waselallah Alsaade - 2021 - Complexity 2021:1-16.
Crop cultivation is one of the oldest activities of civilization. For a long time, crop production was carried out based on knowledge passed from generation to generation. However, due to the rapid growth in the human population of the world, human knowledge-based cultivation is not enough to meet the demanding need. To address this issue, the usage of machine learning-based tools has been studied in this paper. An experiment has been carried out over 0.3 million data. This dataset identifies 46 (...)

Using Sequence Mining to Predict Complex Systems: A Case Study in Influenza Epidemics.Theyazn H. H. Aldhyani, Manish R. Joshi, Shahab A. AlMaaytah, Ahmed Abdullah Alqarni & Nizar Alsharif - 2021 - Complexity 2021:1-16.
According to the World Health Organisation, three to five million individuals are infected by influenza, and around 250,000 to 500,000 people die of this infectious disease worldwide. Influenza epidemics pose a serious public health threat. Moreover, graver dangers are encountered with influenza subtypes against which there is little or no preexisting human immunity. Such subtypes of influenza have the potential to cause devastating epidemics. Thus, enhancing surveillance systems for the purpose of detecting influenza epidemics in an early stage can quicken (...)

    Squashed Entanglement, $$mathbf {}$$-Extendibility, Quantum Marov Chains, and Recovery Maps.Ke Li & Andreas Winter - 2018 - Foundations of Physics 48 (8):910-924.
Squashed entanglement :829–840, 2004) is a monogamous entanglement measure, which implies that highly extendible states have small value of the squashed entanglement. Here, invoking a recent inequality for the quantum conditional mutual information :575–611, 2015) greatly extended and simplified in various work since, we show the converse, that a small value of squashed entanglement implies that the state is close to a highly extendible state. As a corollary, we establish an alternative proof of the faithfulness of squashed entanglement. We briefly (...)
