La nomination d’un oikistes, la mise en place de lois fondamentales ainsi que la consultation de l’Apollon delphique assurent à la cité une fondation idéale dans laquelle, parce qu’idéalement fondée, la justice pourra être visible. Pourquoi requérir cet «apôtre», d’autant plus suspect qu’il s’est, de toute évidence, auto-proclamé tel, et que son nom est couramment associé aux dimensions les plus institutionnelles et les moins ouvertes du christianisme? Et quel usage prétendons-nous faire du dispositif de la foi chrétienne, dont il semble proprement impossible de dissocier la figure et les textes de Paul? Pourquoi invoquer et analyser cette fable? Ce qui va nous retenir, quant à nous, dans l’oeuvre de Paul est cette connexion (...) paradoxale, dont il est l’inventeur, entre un sujet sans identité et une loi sans support, qui fonde la possibilité dans l’histoire d’une prédication universelle. Le geste inouï de Paul est de soustraire la vérité à l’emprise communautaire, qu’il s’agisse d’un peuple, d’une cité, d’un Empire, d’un territoire, ou d’une classe sociale. De 1950 à 1955, le psychologue et épistémologue suisse Jean Piaget s’attelle à la création d’un nouveau lieu de savoir à Genève, le Centre International d’Épistémologie Génétique. Ce Centre fait aboutir un projet de jeunesse de Piaget, dont les fondements théoriques sont donnés dans son ouvrage de 1950 en trois volumes, l’Introduction à l’épistémologie génétique. Mais il y a loin de la théorie à la réalisation pratique. Pour cela, pris dans un mouvement allant de Genève vers l’étranger, dès 1952, Piaget (...) voyage dans toute l’Europe tant pour y présenter ses travaux et son projet que pour se lier avec de nombreux savants de toutes disciplines. Lors de ces voyages, il explore de nombreux modèles de centres et de regroupements d’acteurs en philosophie des sciences, sciences humaines et épistémologie, à Paris, Zurich, Manchester, Milan, Oslo, Amsterdam, Bruxelles et ailleurs. Quatre axes géographiques vont devenir déterminants pour fournir les principaux contingents d’acteurs qui interviendront au Centre durant sa première décennie. Piaget a également pris soin de s’assurer le soutien financier de la Fondation Rockefeller à New York, d’une part pour ses premières explorations et d’autre part pour l’ouverture du Centre en octobre 1955. L’article examine ainsi les conditions de création d’un lieu du savoir durant les premiers temps de la guerre froide dans ses relations avec les circulations scientifiques, et la genèse d’une nouvelle centralité valide pour l’épistémologie mise en pratique comme discipline scientifique. L’esclavage colonial occupe une place récente dans les médias français. Soumis aux récupérations et manipulations médiatiques des uns ou des autres, souvent non spécialistes, il fait généralement l’objet sur les plateaux de télévision, dans la presse, de simplifications maladroites, d’amalgames fâcheux, traduisant finalement l’ampleur de l’ignorance et de l’indifférence incrustées au fil des années dans la société civile sur une période de l’histoire de la France de plus de trois siècles, et pourtant fondatrice de l’Empire colonial français.

Dans le mythe de fondation d’Athènes, lors de sa querelle avec le dieu Poséidon pour remporter le titre de Poliade, Athéna fait croître un olivier sur le sol rocailleux de l’Acropole tandis que Poséidon fait surgir une mer. Cet olivier qui assure la victoire ne saurait se réduire à une preuve de la puissance protectrice de la déesse. Signe d’Athéna, signe de la cité, signe d’un Athénien, il est étroitement associé à l’identité citoyenne comme à l’identité politique. Mais l’olivier apparaît (...) également comme un motif d’épisème de bouclier sur les vases attiques. Qualifié par Sophocle d’« effroi des armes ennemies », brillant et miroitant comme le bouclier de bronze, il redouble l’éclat du guerrier et propose un motif à penser en polarité avec le gorgoneion qui concourt à effrayer l’adversaire. Cette relecture iconographique de l’olivier fait ainsi apparaître que l’arbre d’Athéna oscille entre référence identitaire et rempart fascinant face aux ennemis. (shrink)

Revenant sur les prémisses mêmes de la Cité nationale de l’Histoire de l’immigration , Nancy L. Green retrace la politique entourant le projet ainsi que le choix du bâtiment. Contestée depuis le début dans le fond comme dans la forme, la CNHI doit affronter le problème de ses origines et sa tentative de renverser la symbolique de la colonisation par une reconnaissance de l’immigration, elle-même sujette à des définitions multiples. Passant en revue différentes « options » dans la représentation des (...) immigrés au sein d’un musée d’immigration – une chronologie des vagues d’arrivées, une présentation par groupe ou des choix thématiques –, l’auteur s’interroge sur les tensions entre historiens et scénographes, entre art et histoire au sein du musée, ainsi que sur l’idée de procéder par thèmes, finalement retenue. Si cette approche permet de souligner les similitudes dans l’expérience migratoire, elle peut également en gommer les spécificités. La CNHI elle-même représente un moment spécifique dans la représentation des immigrés en France.From the beginning, the Cité nationale de l’Histoire de l’immigration project was plagued by both political and symbolic difficulties. Nancy L. Green discusses the choices made and the politics surrounding the choice of the building, a former colonial arts museum. How successful is the idea of using an old symbol of France’s hubris at the height of her colonial empire to highlight the historical irony of her former colonies arriving to live in France? In analysing the multiple meanings of immigration itself and the different “options” available to represent a history of immigration in France – a chronological view of successive waves of immigrants, displays highlighting different groups – Green discusses the tensions between researchers and exhibition designers, between art and history as modes of representation, and the idea of the thematic approach, which was the option eventually chosen. While this approach brings out similarities in experiences of migration, it can also detract from an understanding of specific circumstances. Derrida always stressed the importance of his engagement with Heidegger and often returned throughout his life to different aspects of Heidegger’s thought. With the recent publication of his 1964-65 course, Heidegger: The Question of Being and History greater insight is now possible into the exact terms of Derrida’s early engagement with Heidegger and the significance he would accord it in the major works of 1967 and beyond. With the reception of this text just beginning, many lines of interpretation are being (...) unfolded. However, one aspect not yet addressed in this early reception which will be crucial for approaching and orienting this work is the theme of auto-affection. The concept of auto-affection is important for assessing Derrida’s Heidegger course for two reasons. Firstly, Derrida understands auto-affection to be Heidegger’s most radical figuration of temporality in the period of Being and Time. Secondly, tracing Derrida’s early focus on auto-affection in Heidegger can provide an important context for understanding the initial development of what would become a prominent theme in Derrida’s own work. My argument in this paper is structured in three sections. In the first, I give a brief introduction to Derrida’s course. I then present the theme of auto-affection in this course and demonstrate its central importance. In conclusion, I show how Derrida’s treatment of this theme in the context of his early Heidegger engagement can be seen to look forward to his employment of auto-affection in Speech and Phenomena. Bernard Stiegler's account of technology as constitutive of the human as such is without precedent. However, Stiegler's work must also be understood in terms of its explicit appropriations from the thought of Jacques Derrida. An important, yet overlooked, context for framing Stiegler's relation to Derrida is the question of nonhuman life thought in terms of différance . As I argue, Stiegler's account does not unfold the most profound implications of Derrida's understanding of nonhuman life as différance . While Stiegler describes (...) human life as prosthetic and in default of origin, there is no treatment of the way in which nonhuman life is also aporetic and constituted in terms of its relatedness to exteriority. I conclude with a reconsideration of Stiegler's work from the perspective of Derrida's richer account of nonhuman life as différance in order to bring to light an anthropocentric aspect of Stiegler's work. Charles Bambach’s recent book Heidegger’s Roots: Nietzsche, National Socialism, and the Greeks traces the themes of rootedness and the earthly in Heidegger’s thought. Focusing on the role of these themes in the major works of the 1930’s, Bambach offers an account of Heidegger’s relation to contemporaneous conservative and National Socialist ideologies. In this review article, I question the fundamental presupposition guiding Bambach’s approach and present specific reservations regarding his use of untranslated material from Heidegger’s Nietzsche lecture courses.

In this essay, I argue that the scope of Heidegger’s dialog with Hölderlin in Contributions to Philosophy is wider than has often been acknowledged. Traditionally, accounts of this relation have focused solely on tracing Heidegger’s appropriation of Hölderlin’s “flight and arrival of the gods.” In addition to this theme, the relation between Heidegger’s Hölderlin and the project of Contributions should also be framed in light of the specific understanding of attunement which Heidegger developed in his 1934-35 Hölderlin lecture courses. In his recent book The Open: Man and Animal, Giorgio Agamben examines the relation between the essence of the human and the living in Martin Heidegger’s thought. Focusing on the treatment of this relation in Heidegger’s 1929/30 lecture course “The Fundamental Concepts of Metaphysics,” Agamben argues that the dimension of the open, which is central to Heidegger’s understanding of the human essence, can be seen as implicitly dependent upon Heidegger’s account of the essence of animality. In this essay, I argue (...) that Agamben’s reading is insufficient because it has not taken full account of the specifically temporal character of the openness proper to Heidegger’s understanding of the human essence. In conclusion, I present an alternative account of the way in which Heidegger framed his descriptions of animality in the 1929/30 lecture course as articulating the openness characteristic of human being. Since its publication in 1989, Martin Heidegger's Contributions to Philosophy has continued to produce animated debate with regard to the radical sense of futurity which defines and structures this text. In this essay, I first draw into question the common Nietzschean framing of this futurity and argue that the temporality of this futurity should be interpreted within the context of Heidegger's often overlooked descriptions of this coming time as granted by the last god. It is this anticipated gift that can (...) be seen to constitute the hermeneutic center around which the whole of Contributions is composed. In the final section, I then offer a critique of Heidegger's account of the relation between his last god and its granted time in terms of the givenness of a gift. (shrink)

It is well known that Heidegger described his Nietzsche lecture courses as confrontations with National Socialism. Traditionally, this sense of resistance was seen firstly in the fact that Heidegger read Nietzsche at the level of metaphysics and explicitly rejected those ideological appropriations which attempted to reduce Nietzsche’s philosophy to the level of biologism or mere Weltanschauung. This essay argues that the way in which Heidegger framed his interpretation of will to power in his first and second Nietzsche lecture courses can (...) be seen to contain a more explicit critique of the contemporaneous “official” Nietzschebild than has customarily been said. Most accounts of Heidegger’s relation to Nietzsche have traditionally focused on his famous Nietzsche lecture courses or upon his brief yet highly significant references to Nietzsche in Being and Time. However, with recent English translations of key lecture courses from Heidegger’s early Freiburg period it has become clear that during this time another distinct phase of Heidegger’s long and complex relation to Nietzsche can be identified. In this essay, I first chronicle Heidegger’s earliest references to Nietzsche in the period from (...) 1909–1916. I then turn to Heidegger’s early Freiburg lecture courses and demonstrate that the proximity between Nietzsche and Heidegger’s understanding of phenomenology in this period was much greater than has traditionally been said. In conclusion, I argue that one of the most important examples of Heidegger’s appropriation of Nietzsche in this period can be seen in the concept of destruction which played a central role in Heidegger’s account of phenomenological methodology. In this article, I argue that the question of divinity provides an important context for reading Heidegger’s initial two Nietzsche lecture courses (1936–37). First,I demonstrate how this often overlooked background can shed light upon the way in which Heidegger understood the meanings of will to power and eternal recurrence in this period. Second, I argue that the related themes of need (Not) and necessity (Notwendigkeit) in these lectures can be seen as an important framework for understanding the relation between Heidegger’s (...) early Nietzsche engagement and his Contributions to Philosophy (1936–38). Relational agency is pivotal for understanding how language teachers seek and utilize relational resources in different contexts and grow to be agents of change amid various educational challenges. This study explored how three university teachers of Chinese as a second language enacted their relational agency to enhance their research capacity and sustain their professional development. Data on their personal network development was collected through concentric circle interviews, life-history interviews and written reflections over three months. Thematic analysis was adopted for iterative (...) coding and interpretation of the data. The findings revealed that teachers’ personal networks provided them with value guidance, emotional support and academic support, which exerted differential levels of impact on them to make agentic choices and actions. The study suggests that personal network analysis may serve as a suitable theoretical lens to achieve a multi-layered understanding of relational agency. The study also calls for more efforts to create learning opportunities and spaces in the relational context for teachers to build their career as agentic academics in language teacher education and development programs. Dans cet article, je me propose de reconstruire le cadre général de la pensée politique protagoréenne et de dégager ses conditions de possibilité à partir d’une analyse du mythe et des déclarations exposées dans le Protagoras. J’essaierai de montrer que la conception protagoréenne est axée sur les notions de loi et de citoyen d’une part, et sur la relation que le sophiste d’Abdère établit entre loi et nature de l’autre. Protagoras est le premier penseur dans l’histoire de la philosophie grecque (...) qui est en mesure de distinguer le niveau du social (marquant la deuxième phase du développement de la vie humaine) et le niveau du politique (marquant la troisième phase, représentée par la fondation de la cité). Dans ce cadre, j’établirai un parallélisme entre la conception protagoréenne et le concept kantien d’« insociable sociabilité ». J’articulerai enfin cette conception à la définition du sophiste qu’offre Protagoras dans le Théétète, en vue de mettre en évidence le rôle directif du sophiste par rapport au dèmos et son intervention active dans le processus de constitution de la loi, et d’éclaircir ainsi son rapport à la démocratie athénienne. One of the signal developments in contemporary criticism over the past several years has been the ascendancy of the colonial paradigm. In conjunction with this new turn, Frantz Fanon has now been reinstated as a global theorist, and not simply by those engaged in Third World or subaltern studies. In a recent collection centered on British romanticism, Jerome McGann opens a discussion of William Blake and Ezra Pound with an extended invocation of Fanon. Donald Pease has used Fanon to open (...) an attack on Stephen Greenblatt’s reading of the Henriad and the interdisciplinary practices of the new historicism. And Fanon, and published interpretations of Fanon, have become regularly cited in the rereading of the Renaissance that have emerged from places like Sussex, Essex, and Birmingham.1My intent is not to offer a reading of Fanon to supplant these others, but to read, even if summarily, some of these readings of Fanon. By focusing on successive appropriations of this figure, as both totem and text, I think we can chart out an itinerary through contemporary colonial discourse theory. I want to stress, then, that my ambitions here are extremely limited: what follows may be a prelude to a reading of Fanon, but does not even begin that task itself.2 1. À la fin du xixe siècle, avec l’achèvement des jalons d’un enseignement supérieur colonial en Algérie – création des écoles d’enseignement supérieur en Algérie en 1880 et fondation d’une université coloniale en terre algérienne, dotée d’un système facultaire en 1909 –, le paysage universitaire colonial prend son essor et se développe considérablement. La circulation d’universitaires métropolitains qui traversent la Méditerranée pour venir s’installer souvent durablement en Algérie, est le fait de botanistes, géologues, médecins et de mathématiciens. Cette contribution se focalise (...) sur l’analyse des circulations et des échanges dans le domaine des mathématiques entre la métropole et le territoire algérien. Elle propose d’examiner les évolutions de ces circulations à travers les trajectoires et les parcours d’universitaires qui ont soit effectué un séjour court en Algérie ou qui ont effectué toute leur carrière universitaire et scientifique en Algérie. Cette focale, qui prend en compte la période 1868 à 1941, s’interroge en arrière-plan sur la contribution du système colonial à la formation de jeunes mathématiciens algériens musulmans. (shrink)

La mort d’Érechthée donne en effet lieu à un partenariat de (...) choix pour ces Athéniens en mal d’ancrage : Érechthée, le roi autochtone et Poséidon, le dieu à l’assise solide et aux fondations inébranlables, qui seront désormais associés dans le culte sous le nom de Poséidon-Érechthée ou Érechthée-Poséidon. Grâce à ce partenariat fondateur, la cité autochtone a réussi le pari de son auto-fondation. Car, à travers Érechthée, c’est tous les Athéniens que Poséidon enracine sur leur propre terre.Return to earth: the end of the story of Erechtheus. There is not one founder of Athens but many autochtones repeating the inaugural figure of the founder without nonetheless incarnating it fully. It is the particular death of Erechtheus that ends the long founding operations. Hidden in the civic earth, his death under Poseidon’s revengeful trident is neither a crime nor a “beautiful death” but a founding death. Indeed, the death of Erechtheus gives birth to a founding partnership of choice for those Athenians in search of their roots: Erechtheus, the autochtonous king, and Poseidon, the god with a solid basis and unmovable foundations, would become associated in the cult as Poseidon-Erechtheus or Erechtheus-Poseidon. Because of this founding partnership, the autochtonous city succeeded in the challenge of self-foundation. Through Erechtheus, it was all Athenians that Poseidon could root in their own land. À partir de la traduction de l’inscription de la stèle indicatrice d’Aliki, publiée en 1964, on propose plusieurs hypothèses d’itinéraires à travers l’île entre Aliki et Thasos, par l’Est comme par l’Ouest. On s’appuie, pour l’essentiel, sur des éléments relevant de l’analyse des paysages. Ceci permet de renforcer, en la précisant, l’hypothèse d’une localisation de Démétrion dans la région des Kalyvias de Kastro (près de Limenaria). L’organisation spatiale de l’île qui en découle est constituée d’un centre (la cité) et de (...) zones-relais d’habitats nucléés (desserrés autour d’un pôle) qui structurent une population probablement nombreuse dès la fondation de la cité. Les itinéraires décrits, comme la densité du peuplement, impliquent un espace sécurisé et exploité de manière plus ou moins intensive dans la quasi-totalité du territoire et durant toute l’Antiquité. La richesse des ressources thasiennes permet de mieux comprendre la densité précoce de la population qui, en retour, a permis de pérenniser sa richesse durant toute l’Antiquité. (shrink)
