The studies of Empedocles have made headway in showing that Empedocles postulated a double zoogony. Whereas this has been traditionally related to the hypothesis of two worlds per cycle, some Empedoclean fragments provide evidence for a double zoogony in a cosmic cycle with one world. How can we reconcile the hypothesis of two zoogonies with the assumption of a unique world? Whereas there have been attempts to address this question by retaining the traditional idea of two opposite zoogonic (...) periods or phases, I contend that Empedocles’ fragments invite us to a reconsideration of his notion of a double birth and death of mortal beings. This article aims at reconstructing the most damaged part of the Strasbourg papyrus of Empedocles (fragment f-d), by taking into account all the parameters at our disposal: palaeography, metre and, of course, content. According to this attempt, Empedocles would be describing the very moment in the phase of increasing Strife when the whole-natured creatures (the ολοφυ) were split into male and female beings. Thus, the first part of the fragment becomes very similar, in its content, to fr. 62 D.-K. and (...) to Plato's parody of Empedocles in Aristophanes' myth in the Symposium , while its second part emerges as containing new details of the process by which double creatures were split into two. If this reconstruction is accepted, its implication will be that Aetius' presentation of Empedocles' cosmic cycle as a fourfold continuous process is deeply inadequate. (shrink)

Řecké sloveso metabiónai, objevující se v Aetiově zprávě o Anaximandrově zoogonii, bylo dosud považováno za ojedinělé a předpokládalo se, že může mít význam „změnit způsob života“, nebo „přežít“. Tato studie nachází dosud neznámé výskyty daného slovesa, které svědčí pro význam „změnit způsob života“, současně však upozorňuje na syntaktickou problematičnost tohoto významu v Aetiově textu.keywords: Anaximandros; zoogonie; metabiónai; řecký aorist; Aetios; Pseudo-Plútarchos; Placita.

Studie pomocí segmentové analýzy pěti existujících zlomků Anaximandrovy zoogonie a antropogonie ukazuje, že Aetiův zlomek o zoogonii, dosud téměř všeobecně považovaný za nejspolehlivější, je složený ze segmentů spadajících do oblasti antropogonie – tj. že ve skutečnosti o Anaximandrově zoogonii nepřináší téměř žádné informace. Komplikovaný problém vztahu Anaximandrovy zoogonie a antropogonie je tím paradoxně vyřešen: o zoogonii bez Aetiova zlomku máme naprostý nedostatek zpráv.

Lucretius' account of the origin of life, the origin of species, and human prehistory is the longest and most detailed account extant from the ancient world. It gives an anti-teleological mechanistic theory of zoogony and the origin of species that does away with the need for any divine aid or design in the process, and accordingly it has been seen as a forerunner of Darwin's theory of evolution. This commentary locates Lucretius in both the ancient and modern contexts, and (...) treats Lucretius' ideas as very much alive rather than as historical concepts. The recent revival of creationism makes this study particularly relevant to contemporary debate, and indeed, many of the central questions posed by creationists are those Lucretius attempts to answer. Cet article est consacré au fragment B23 d’Empédocle, où l’auteur met en relation la génération des espèces vivantes à partir des quatre éléments avec l’art pictural dont les productions résultent des divers mélanges d’un nombre limité de pigments. La première partie aborde la dimension heuristique de l’analogie dans le cadre du récit cosmologique, notamment la question de la correspondance entre comparans et comparandum. À l’intérieur de cette relation, un problème grammatical et théorique retient mon attention : alors que le sujet (...) et les verbes du fragment sont au pluriel, les procédés des peintres sont exprimés par des participes au duel. Ces duels ont souvent été interprétés comme des allusions aux deux puissances cosmiques d’Empédocle, l’Amour et la Haine. Prenant appui sur l’interprétation récente du cycle cosmique donnée par Oliver Primavesi, selon laquelle même dans la période où la Haine domine, l’Amour reste le principe de production des espèces mortelles, je propose d’interpréter les duels comme une allusion aux mains de Cypris, l’une des personnifications du pouvoir démiurgique de l’Amour. En ce sens, la lecture que je propose ici de l’analogie s’avère compatible avec les deux courants interprétatifs principaux de la zoogonie d’Empédocle (unique/double). Dans la deuxième partie de l’article, j’analyse l’écart réflexif que l’analogie des peintres introduit par rapport à deux formes de discours contemporaines d’Empédocle qui thématisent la question de la représentation : d’une part, la tradition lyrique, notamment Simonide et Pindare ; de l’autre, le poème philosophique de Parménide. In antiquity living beings are inextricably linked to the cosmos as a whole. Ancient biology and cosmology depend upon one another and therefore a complete understanding of one requires a full account of the other. This volume addresses many philosophical issues that arise from this double relation. Does the cosmos have a soul of its own? Why? Is either of these two disciplines more basic than the other, or are they at the same explanatory level? What is the relationship between (...) living things and the cosmos as a whole? If the cosmos is an animate intelligent being, what is the nature of its thoughts and actions? How do these relate to our own thoughts and actions? Do they pose a threat to our autonomy as subjects and agents? And what is the place of zoogony in cosmogony? Die Entdeckung des Straßburger Empedokles-Papyrus und seine 1999 erfolgte Publikation war für die Erforschung der antiken Philosophie ein einzigartiger Glücksfall. Die neu hinzugekommenen Texte ergänzten die fragmentarische Überlieferung von Empedokles’ naturphilosophischem Lehrgedicht Physika (so der in der Antike gebräuchliche Titel) an entscheidenden Stellen. Allerdings wurde das Potenzial des Papyrus zur Klärung ungelöster Interpretationsprobleme in der auf die Veröffentlichung folgenden Forschungsdiskussion noch nicht ausgeschöpft. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird auf der Basis einer kontinuierlichen inhaltlichen und sprachlichen Analyse des Textes eine Gesamtrekonstruktion (...) des empedokleischen Theoriegebäudes vorgelegt. Untersucht werden dabei vor allem die zyklische Struktur allen Werdens, die Funktionen von Liebe und Streit, die einzelnen Stadien von Kosmogonie und Zoogonie und das inhaltliche Verhältnis von Physika und einem weiteren Gedicht des Autors, den Katharmoi. Die Ergebnisse werden abschließend auch in einer neuen Übersetzung der durch Einbeziehung des Straßburger Papyrus wiedergewonnenen Teile des Gedichts zusammengeführt. (shrink)

This study focuses on the origin of life as presented in the thought of Anaximander of Miletus but also points to some parallel motifs found in much later conceptions of both the pre-Darwinian German romantic science and post-Darwinian biology. According to Anaximander, life originated in the moisture associated with earth (mud). This moist environment hosted the first living creatures that later populated the dry land. In these descriptions, one can trace the earliest hints of the notion of environmental adaptation. The (...) origin of humans was seen as connected in some way with fish: ancient humans were supposed to have developed inside fish-like animals. Anaximander took into account changes in the development of living creatures (adaptations) and speculated on the origins of humans. Similar ideas are found also in the writings of much later, eighteenth and nineteenth century authors who were close to the tradition of German romantic science. We do not argue that these later concepts are in any way directly linked with those of the pre-Socratics, but they show surprising parallels in, e.g., the hypothesis that life originated in a moist environment or the supposition that human developed from fish-like ancestors. These transformations are seen as a consequence of timeless logic rather than as evolution in historical terms. Despite the accent on the origin of living things, both Anaximander and the later Naturphilosophen lack in their notions the element most characteristic of Darwin’s thought, that is, the emphasis on historicity and uniqueness of all that comes into being. Pour les premiers penseurs grecs, si l’apparition et l’évolution des espèces sont dues à une causalité physique nécessaire, celle-ci va se manifester, selon les conditions locales, par la réalisation d’une immense variété de possibles. La zoogonie de Démocrite témoigne ainsi du fait qu’avant de faire espèce, chaque vivant a d’abord été un individu, dont le type caractéristique se révèle être l’empreinte ( tupos ) singulière de son biotope propre. Par ce terme, on entend rendre compte de l’inscription de chaque vivant (...) dans une imbrication d’enveloppes ou membranes plastiques en interaction mutuelle, qui constitue son monde et caractérise son bios, le mode d’existence par lequel il devient tel. Quand l’Amour d’Empédocle façonne, dans les profondeurs de la terre, les tissus organiques puis les membres des vivants, il prend le nom de Cypris, et sous ses paumes expertes le feu, ailleurs nommé Zeus, devient Héphaïstos. En s’interrogeant sur les raisons de ces glissements, on s’aperçoit qu’un modèle métallurgique est à l’œuvre, qui se réapproprie en la détournant la figure du dieu-forgeron d’Hésiode et d’Homère. L’Héphaïstos d’Empédocle est le feu dont le pouvoir potentiellement destructeur est subjugué par Aphrodite-Cypris qui enserre (...) ses paumes dans les siennes. Alors que dans la tradition, il est un marteleur évoquant la Haine, il devient l’objet d’un nouveau paradigme, la fonderie, quand il se laisse manipuler par Cypris qui, comme le cuivre dans le bronze, se mêle aux alliages, membres et soudures qu’elle coule et moule.
