Il faut aborder avec scepticisme les quelques références à Pythagore et aux Pythagoriciens contenues dans les dialogues de Platon, car il est difficile de prendre la mesure effective d'une influence pythagoricienne sur l'Athénien. En fait, les seules références explicites à Pythagore (Rép. X 600a-b) et aux Pythagoriciens (Rép. VII 530c-531a) ne nous disent pas grand-chose et, concernant les personnages traditionnellement considérés comme pythagoriciens, nos informations sont peu fiables, incertaines et temps contradictoires. Une telle prudence est particulièrement utile dans (...) le cas de Timée et du caractère homonyme de ce dialogue, dont le pythagorisme, bien que largement accepté par les commentateurs, semble hautement discutable. Ainsi, seule l'application d'une méthode historique prudente et lucide peut éviter cette dérive qui identifie comme pythagoricienne toute référence à la transmigration de l'âme et aux mathématiques au sens large. Quel est le secret de Pythagore? On pourrait avancer que, par défi nition, s'il y a secret, il est caché et n’est pas dévoilable, ou ne sera pas dévoilé. Le vrai secret est celui dont on ne soupçonne même pas l’existence. On peut toutefois approcher tangentiellement le coeur du pythagorisme à partir d’un idéal qui a traversé les âges.

Le nom de Pythagore résonne dans l'histoire de la pensée depuis 2 500 ans. Peu de personnages historiques ont engendré un mythe d'une telle ampleur et dont la persistance est d'autant plus remarquable qu'aucune institution n'entretient sa mémoire. Mais de larges zones d'ombre subsistent et un grand nombre de questions viennent à l'esprit. N'était-il qu'un chamane doué d'un immense charisme ou bien, au contraire, un penseur profond aux intuitions prophétiques? Quelle fut la réelle contribution de l'école du sage de (...) Samos aux mathématiques, à la musique et à l'astronomie? Pourquoi fait-il partie de la légende des francs-maçons, fascine-t-il les sectateurs du nombre d'or et séduit-il les théosophes de tous les temps? Que signifient les innombrables références à son nom sous la plume des esprits les plus audacieux de l'histoire scientifique, parmi lesquels Kepler et Newton? Pourquoi l'Église qui avait combattu ses idées, puis tenté de l'intégrer dans son cortège de saints laïques, décida-t-elle enfin de l'exclure de son iconographie alors qu'il figurait dans les sculptures des cathédrales gothiques et dans les fresques des chapelles de la Renaissance? En faisant le point sur ce que l'histoire, l'archéologie et la philologie ont à dire sur ces questions, cet essai déroule l'histoire du pythagorisme et des controverses qui l'accompagnent, symptômes d'une bipolarisation propre à l'Occident où coexistent dans une tension créatrice raison et foi, rationalisme et empirisme, élitisme et démocratie. Nonetheless, Robb's "speculations" on the Platonic dialogues are certainly worth reading. Robb is quite aware that his book stirs up controversial issues, and some of these are briefly stated and discussed in his concluding chapter, "Homer, the Alphabet, and the Progress of Greek Literacy and Paideia." And yet in the very notions of "literacy" and "progress," some (...) weaknesses in Robb's work can be found. For example, as W. V. Harris observed in his Ancient Literacy , 3ft., there is no single definition of literacy or orality, and although Robb cites Harris's book , he takes no special account of it in attempting to define or characterize what he means by "orality" and "literacy." And in his zeal to provide a survey of the influence of alphabetic literacy on Plato, Robb perhaps oversimplifies the tension that existed between the spoken and written work in the ancient world. Much of Greek "literature" remains the product of literate, slave- owning, and well-educated authors, written for their peers. Pythagoric life accompanied by fragments of the ethical writings of certain Pythagoreans in the Doric dialect and a collection of Pythagoric sentences from Stobaeus and others.

The development of philosophical ideas throughout history has sometimes been assisted by the use of handcrafted instruments. Some paradigmatic cases, such as the invention of the telescope or the microscope, show that many philosophical approaches have been the result of the intervention of such instruments. The aim of this article is to show the determining role that stringed musical instruments with frets had in the crisis and generation of philosophical paradigms. In fact, just as the observations of the moon with (...) the telescope broke more than a thousand years of Aristotelian hegemony, the fretted string instruments, predecessors of the guitar, played a central role in the collapse of one of the most influential approaches in the history of Philosophy: Pythagorism. We focus on the fundamental hallmarks of Pythagorism and on how, during the 16th century and from the fretted string instruments, the mathematical-musical notion of equal temperament emerged, which from the middle of the 19th century will be established as the prevailing philosophical-musical paradigm of the West.
