This study examines the Korean aesthetic consciousness of colour by focusing on the preference far white in clothing culture. A nation's symbolic use of certain colours develops over time as a tradition representing the national sentiment and philosophy of life. In this way, traditional colours not only influence the senses but also evoke ideas about a country's social customs. Far example, white clothes without bleaching, artificial processing, or fancy patterns have a simple and pure beauty. This paper discusses the (...) Aesthetics is not a subject usually associated with North Korea in Western scholarship, the usual tropes being autocracy, counterfeiting, drugs, human-rights abuse, famine, nuclear weapons, party-military dictatorship, Stalinism, and totalitarianism. Where the arts are concerned, they are typically seen as crude political propaganda. Korean art and music have a long history, but aesthetic research on them has only been around for a little over a hundred years. Critiques and discourses on traditional arts such as poetry, calligraphy, and painting can be traced back to the Joseon or even Goryeo dynasties, but the modern discussion on the common features of Korean aesthetics was conducted much later than that in Western Europe, where the field of aesthetics was established in the mid to late (...) eighteenth century. Early aestheticists who tried to explain aesthetic consciousness in Korean culture and art converged on the concept of Jayeon, which can be translated provisionally as “nature,” seemingly diverging from western aesthetics’ focus on the concept of “beauty.” Jayeon shares the same Chinese characters as ziran, an early Daoist concept, but jayeon in a Korean aesthetic context does not appear to be limited to the connotation of its Chinese origin. Korean Naturalism focuses on inner discipline by taking nature as a criterion. In this context, at the core of Korean aesthetic consciousness are inner virtues beyond superficial beauty. It may be too radical to apply Korean Naturalism to the current practice of new-media art. Nevertheless, some contemporary artists who attempt to bring back Korean tradition from a new perspective experiment with Korean Naturalism. In this study, I consider the method and concept those artists pursue as (...) evolved Naturalism with new media and a new zeitgeist. When a classic Korean painting transforms into a moving image, it is possible to experience an inward immersion and contemplation through the calm instilled in dynamism. In addition, through the installation art that intentionally composes a blank space, visitors can viscerally experience the space and unconsciously fill it with their narratives. The present-day artist's task is to correctly interpret the message contained in the tradition, rather than imitate the appearance of traditional art without the spirit. The artist should inculcate this attitude to accomplish historical continuity, which is an essential element for experimenting with conventional Korean artworks and aesthetic consciousness. (shrink)

Cultural factors are operating in the aesthetic experience of pictorial realism, occurring in a transcultural manner, and their effects are salient in beholder’s affective reaction correlated with perceptual-cognitive operation. This paper aims to demonstrate this hypothesis, by developing two analytical tools that might explain the anti-hedonic valence of Hong Taeyong, an eighteenth-century Korean literatus’ aesthetic experience of a Western religious fresco depicting the Lamentation of Christ in a Jesuit Catholic church in Beijing. First, a complex multifold conflict between «actual (...) affect» and culturally modeled «ideal affect», operating simultaneously in his visual experience, might be translated into a highly negative valence of his global affective state. Second, the variance of processing fluencies at different levels would have made his global processing operation less fluid, and it might play a role in his negative affective valence, since the affect is inherent in processing fluency signal. Abstract:This essay addresses the largely unrecognized art of a former comfort woman, Duk-kyung Kang (1929–1997). Comfort women were forced sexual slaves for the Imperial Japanese Army during the Second World War. By analyzing how both postcolonial and decolonial aesthetics are embodied in her paintings, the potential of her art to challenge colonialism becomes pronounced.

Cho Jihoon’s aesthetics is based on the Confucian literati’s spirit, choesado, and on the Buddhist idea of non-duality. He presented the theory of meot, meaning taste originally, as a Korean-specific aesthetic category in his Study of Meot, where he synthesized the previously discussed theories of other scholars into twelve elements. Discussing the formal characteristics of works that have the aesthetic quality of meot, he took unrefinedness as basic, and cited diversity, eurhythmy, and curvature as its subtraits. Discussing the compositional (...) power or method of expression that provokes meot, he took hyperstandard as basic, and the subtraits include maturity, distortion, and playfulness. Furthermore, he discussed meot as an emotion or idea that Koreans live with, where the most basic one is otiosity (impracticality), and assimilation, moderation, and optimism are its subtraits. Finally, he identified meot as the ultimate aesthetic state with pungryu, a lifestyle in harmony with Nature, which is originated from the ancient Silla period. (shrink)

The long Japanese tradition of Korean ceramics appreciation, closely associated with the Zen tea ceremony _(chanoyu), _has played an important role in the development of Korean aesthetics in the twentieth century. The art critic and philosopher Yanagi Soetsu was instrumental in this process during the occupation period, since, continuing in this tradition, he particularly valued Joseon ceramics for their aesthetic qualities - such as naturalness, nonchalance, and simplicity - akin to praised values in Zen Buddhism. Yanagi’s pioneering writings (...) might have been influential in the prevalence of those traits when defining Korean art and aesthetics in general. After a brief presentation of key expressions defining Korean art and aesthetics, the paper focuses on Yanagi’s aesthetic assessment of Joseon ceramics and particularly on his proposal of its appreciation beyond the modern Western division between art and craft. This paper explores global K-pop's negotiation and reconstruction of Korean aesthetics via the dismantling, adoption, appropriation, and transfiguring of central elements of Korean traditional culture. Recently, K-pop groups have been incorporating traditional music and dance (gugak), traditional attire (hanbok), traditional houses (hanok), and old palaces (gogung) into music videos disseminated globally over digital platforms like YouTube. In their efforts to incorporate more 'Koreanness' into their musical productions and neutralize criticisms of their use of the 'K' prefix as inauthentic (...) and unconnected to Korean aesthetics, groups like BTS and BLACKPINK are redefining 'K-heritage' for music consumers worldwide. Along with other globally consumed Hallyu productions like K-movies, K-dramas, and K-games, K-Pop is in the process of reconstructing Koreans' and the world's view of the meaning of Korean-ness. The genre of fable tends to be overlooked in the study of Korean literary history on the ground that the genre seems too archaic to reflect the aesthetic standards established in the modern European novel, in which the focus lies in the realistic representation of the individual or contemporary society. However, the genre was not completely abandoned by modern Korean writers. Few critics have noted the continuing role played by the rich Korean fable tradition, which eventually made (...) the reinvention of the genre in the mass media possible. In particular, it is worth noting that there was the emergence of a new subgenre of fable in the late nineteenth century: that is, fabulous court case fiction, which is quite distinct from the Chinese literary tradition that had underprivileged imaginative narrative texts under the absolute domination of Confucian historiography. The genre of fabulous court case fiction makes us reconsider the plurality of narrative forms and various narrative functions. In this study, I examine how imaginative narrative texts such as fables simultaneously pursue the pleasure of storytelling and the purposes of both moral and specialized education. (shrink)

In this essay, I discuss Korean artists’ multi-layered, internal motives for engaging in artistic practices: their artistic devotion derives from their desires for moral self-cultivation, self-enjoyment, and self-forgetting. I speculate that these tendencies were intensified in Korean cultural traditions by distinctive sociopolitical circumstances of the Joseon period under the dominance of Neo-Confucianism, such as a fixed social hierarchy and Sino-centrist perspectives. A metaphor is an effective way to show how something is to be conceived. In this article, I look at two Neo-Confucian Korean philosophical contexts—the Four-Seven debate and Book of the Imperial Pivot—and suggest that metaphors are philosophically expedient in two further contexts: when both intellect and emotion must be addressed; and when the aim of philosophizing is to produce behavioral change. Because Neo-Confucians had a conception of the mind that closely connected it to the heart (心 xin), metaphor’s (...) empathy-inducing and perspective-giving capacities made it an especially helpful mode of philosophizing in the history of Korean philosophy. 미적 감정주의는 미적 가치평가가 감정 반응에 근거한다는 생각이다. 이 글에서 나는 미적 감정주의에 기초하여 미적 감정이 있다고 주장하는 두 관점인 환원주의와 수정주의를 비판적으로 검토한다. 경이 환원주의는 비인지주의 감정 이론을 전제하고 미적 감상이 경이 감정으로 환원된다고 주장한다. 다수 감정 환원주의는 인지주의나 비인지주의를 전제하지 않고 미적 감상이 다수의 감정으로 이루어진 한 부류로 환원된다고 주장한다. 반면 수정주의는 감상 감정인 미적 감정이 별도의 감정적 기능인 완성적 기능을 갖기에 독자적인 감정 유형으로 분류돼야 한다고 주장한다. 그러나 환원주의는 개념 예술 감상을 적절하게 설명하지 못한다는 문제를 가진다. 이에 (...) 더해, 경이 환원주의는 재조정을 통해 미적 경이의 지향적 대상을 구성하는 데 취약하고, 다수 감정 환원주의는 미적 가치평가의 근거가 감정이 아닌 다른 반응이나 태도일 가능성을 간과하는 문제를 가진다. 한편 수정주의는 감정의 완성적 기능과 정감적 평가가 개념적으로 충돌하는 문제를 드러내며, 직접 경험 원칙에서 벗어나는 예술 감상 사례를 설명하지 못한다. 그러므로 나는 환원주의와 수정주의가 모두 성공적이지 않다고 결론 내린다. 그림을 보거나 음악을 듣는 것을 즐기는 일은 예술작품을 감상하는(appreciate) 일과 관련된다. 그러나 감상의 대상을 오직 예술작품으로만 간주하는 것은 논란의 여지가 있다. 왜냐하면 감상의 대상에는 예술작품만 있는 것이 아니며 해당 작품을 항상 미적으로만 감상할 필요도 없기 때문이다. 그렇다면 자연환경이나 자연적 대상은 어떠한가? 이는 우리가 비예술적 활동 영역과 같은 일상 혹은 자연환경의 영역에서 예술에 대한 다양한 착상을 얻기 때문에 제기할 수 있는 물음으로 이해할 수 있다. 최근, 앤더슨(Erik Anderson)은 자연환경과 같은 비예술적 활동 영역에서 발생하는 침묵(silence)을 미적으로 감상할 수 있다고 주장한다. 나아가 그는 (...) 침묵에 대한 미적 감상이 우리 삶에 기여하는 바가 분명하므로 가치 있는 미적 경험이라고 덧붙인다. 하지만 침묵을 미적으로 감상할 수 있다는 앤더슨의 주장은 우리의 직관과 다소 거리가 있어 보인다. 왜냐하면 침묵이란 소리의 부재(absence)를 의미하며 그러한 상태에는 감상할 만한 미적 특징이 전혀 없어 보이기 때문이다. 만약 침묵에 주목할 만한 미적 특징이 전혀 없다면, 침묵에 대한 미적 감상은 불가능할 것이다. 필자는 이 글에서 침묵에 대한 미적 감상이 가능하다는 앤더슨의 주장을 비판적으로 음미하고 그 한계를 보이고자 한다. To Korean people by the end of the 19th century who had previously enjoyed only traditional music genres, the music introduced by the hands of the missionaries must have been very new and unfamiliar. One hundred and a few decades since the meagre beginning of the meeting between the two has now passed, Korea has transformed into a modernized society where all kinds of music are performed and enjoyed, among which Western classical and popular music exist with considerable weight. (...) In the course of the development, there were constant exchanges between Korean traditional music and Western music. Korean traditional music has been subject at one end to defensive modification under the motto of transmission and at another end to aggressive destruction of some core aspects of the tradition under the motto of re-creation. 이 연구는 공공성과 관련된 세 가지 개념인 한계, 경계, 임계 개념을 비교하는 것에서 시작한다. 공공성을 상상할 수 있는 개별 주체의 비판적 능력에 대해 ‘한계’ 개념을 적용할 수 있고, 그러한 주체들이 비판적으로 서로의 인식을 점검하는 과정에 대해서는 ‘경계’ 개념을 적용할 수 있다. 소위 공공성은 이 상호성이 성립되는 경계 개념부터 등장하는데, 주체와 타자가 서로 대등한 관계에서 공공성을 형성하므로, 경계 개념이 적용되는 공공성을 대칭적 공공성이라 할 수 있다. 하지만 개인의 비판적 인식과 그 인식의 상호 점검을 넘어서는 또 다른 인식 방법이 있다. 소위 타자 (...) 중심의 인식으로서, 타자의 등장으로 인해 주체의 인식 능력이 무력화되는 데서 출발하는 인식이다. 이 연구는 이를 ‘임계’라는 개념으로 규정한다. 배제되어 취약한 타자들이 기존 권리 주체들에게 제기하는 공적 긴장을 임계적 공공성이라 한다. 임계적 공공성은 비대칭적 관계에서 출발한다. 이 연구는 임계적 공공성을 근본적 공공성으로 간주한 후, 이를 공공예술을 위한 토대로 삼는다.BR 공공예술은 기존 예술계의 자장을 넘어 일상의 공적 장소와 가치에 개입하고, 새로운 공적 가치를 창출하기 위해 예술을 수단으로 삼는다. 최근 새로운 예술 사조로 급부상한 공공예술은 예술적 완성도도 중요하지만, 예술적 개입이 창출한 공적 효과나 가치에 더 무게를 둔다. 공공예술은 자신의 작업이 얼마나 공적인 특성을 가지고 있느냐에 따라 그 성/패가 좌우된다. 따라서 공공예술은 공공성에 대한 고려 없이 공공예술의 미적 가치를 비평할 수 없다. 이 연구는 다양한 공공예술의 사례를 들어 공공예술과 임계적 공공성의 관계를 추적한 후, 공공예술의 미학에서 핵심이 되어야 할 개념을 추출한다. 일찍이 공공예술과 관련하여 비평적 접근은 있었으나, 미학 이론적 접근은 없었다는 점에서, 그리고 공공예술과 공공성의 관계를 추적해온 연구자의 기존 연구를 종합하여 공공예술의 미학을 구축하기 위한 첫 시도라는 점에서, 이 연구는 나름의 의의를 갖는다. 숲에 관한 관심이 뜨겁게 달아오르고 있다. 이는 ‘생태적 삶의 추구’가 일종의 시대정신이 된 상황과 밀접하게 연관되어 있다. 그런데 이러한 현상이 명실상부한 생태적 삶으로 이어지고 있다고 보기 어렵다. 본고는 이를 비판적으로 고찰하고, 더 나아가 숲에 관한 생태학적 인식과 실제 삶이 괴리되지 않도록 하는 데 일조하려는 시도의 일환이다.BR 이를 위해서 논자는 ‘뵈메(G. Böhme)가 말하는 생태적 자연미학’의 관점에서 숲을 조망하고자 한다. 뵈메가 강조하는 영국식 정원과 조경술은 숲에 관한 생태학적 연구와 보통 사람들이 일상에서 접하는 숲 체험이 괴리되지 않고 조화를 이루는 데로 나아가는 실마리를 제공한다. (...) 특히 조경술의 실천과 지침이 그렇다.BR 본고는 그러한 실마리를 바탕으로 특정한 숲(화담숲)에 대한 생태미학적 조망을 시도한다. 이를 통해서 조경술이 시사하는 ‘가로지름의 실천’에 기초한 숲의 생태미학적 조망은 보통 사람들이 일상에서 자연/인공의 이분법의 덫을 넘어 ‘자연과, 숲과 억지스럽게 않게 어우러지는 삶’의 가능성을 열어준다는 사실이 드러난다. 요컨대 숲은 평범한 사람이 자신의 일상과 괴리되지 않는 방식으로, 즉 몸으로 느끼고 감지하는 감성적 방식으로, 자연적인 것/인공적인 것의 이분법에서 벗어나서, 자연의 소리에 귀를 기울이게 해주고, 자연의 사고에 다가가게끔 해주는 특별한 체험의 개방된 공간이라는 사실이 숲의 생태미학적 조망을 통해서 개시된다는 점이 논구된다. 뵈메의 시각으로 서포터즈의 퍼포먼스에 주목해서 프로 축구경기의 미학적 의미를 고찰하고, 이를 통해서 축구 미학은 물론 더 나아가서 스포츠 미학을 새로운 관점에서 접근하는 길을 환기시키는 것이 논문의 목적이다. 이러한 목적에 상응하는 연구의 내용은 다음과 같다. 먼저 ‘분위기’ 및 ‘분위기 머금은 현상’ 개념을 중심으로 뵈메의 ‘지각학으로서의 미학’의 핵심이 검토된다. 이는 축구경기의 미학적 의미를 전통미학의 틀에서 벗어나서 논구할 수 있는 기초를 다지는 것을 의미한다. 다음으로 축구경기에서 만들어지는 분위기, 즉 축구경기의 특정 상황에서 형성되는 경기장 전체의 분위기가 ‘극적인 골’ 사건에 초점을 맞춰 검토된 뒤, 그것이 (...) 어떻게 미학적 대상이 되는가 하는 점이 구명된다. 다시 말해서 극적인 골 직후 조성되는 경기장 분위기가 기본적으로 목적성취 혹은 욕구충족에 기인하는 것임에도 불구하고, 어째서 미학적 사건이라고 할 수 있는가 하는 점, 어째서 욕구충족과 무관한 지각경험의 대상이라 할 수 있는가 하는 점이 해명된다. 아울러 그 사건이 ‘분위기 머금은 현상’으로 표현되고 전달될 때, 그것은 이른바 직관 팬뿐만 아니라 모든 사람에게 미학적 대상이 되는데, 이것이 구체적으로 무엇을 의미하는 것인가 하는 점도 밝혀진다. 마지막으로 ‘축구경기의 미학적 의미’를 새로운 관점에서, 좀 더 정확히 말해서 뵈메의 관점에서 조망하고자 할 경우, 욕구대상으로서의 축구경기가 지각의 대상으로 전환될 때 일반 팬이 감지하게 되는 ‘성과사회의 그물코를 벗어나지 못한 삶에 처해있음’의 의미가 다각도로 논구되는 것이 무엇보다도 필요가 있다는 사실이 언급된다. 이러한 내용을 담고 있는 본 논문은 몇 가지 한계에도 불구하고 전통 미학의 틀에서 벗어나서 스포츠 미학 담론을 새로운 시각에서 새롭게 논의하는 것이 필요하고 또 충분히 가능하다는 사실을 환기시켜주는 데에는 기여할 수 있을 것이다. 이 글은 미학에 관한 논문이다. 미학 가운데서도 특히 『주역』을 대상으로 하여 『주역』경문과 괘효상에 나타나는 미를 분석하였다. 『주역』은 그래도 기본적으로는 글로 쓰인 문헌이기 때문에 본 논문에서는 『주역』의 경문經文과 전문傳文에 나타나는 문예미를 분석하였다. 그 결과 『주역』의 경문은 시적 요소가 많았음을 밝힌다. 그리고 전문에서는 경문을 설명하고 있는데 이러한 설명은 대부분 효위爻位에 근거하여 설명하고 있다. 그러나 『주역』에서 설명하려고 했던 것은 괘상과 효상이다. 괘상과 효상은 상징적인 것이면서 한편으로 회화나 서예처럼 감상자나 품평자에게 그림을 보고 그림 이면의 이치를 깨닫게 해 준다. 이것은 마치 동양 회화론에서 그림을 해석하는 (...) 것과 같다. 비록 괘상과 효상이 뛰어난 화가가 그린 그림과는 차이가 있어도 그림이 표상하는 바와 괘상이 표상하는 바는 같다고 할 것이다. 사람은 이것을 터득하고 깨달을 수 있다.BR 또한 『주역』은 동양 형이상학의 기반이 되는 책이다. 『주역』의 형이상학에서 문자적으로 의미가 있는 것은 ‘도’와 ‘태극’이라 할 수 있다. 아울러 본 논문에서는 ‘음양’을 형이상학으로 취급하였다. 일반적으로 음양은 ‘기氣’로 이해되나 『주역』의 형이상학적 요소 가운데 중요한 부분은 차지하는 것이 ‘생생불이生生不已’이므로 생생을 현실적인 모습에서 바라보지 않고 우주가 지닌 본체적 모습으로 바라본 것이다. 아울러 우주의 ‘생생불이’의 관점에서 다시 인간을 바라보면서 인간은 최고의 창조품이자 결정품으로 보았다. 이 때문에 『주역』은 우주 본체를 해석하는 것이었으나, 다시 미감으로 인성을 해석하고자 하였다. 그러나 이 작업은 매우 정미하고 난해하므로 우선 대체적인 안을 세워 놓고 다음의 연구 과제로 돌렸다. Experiences in the heart is one matter and literary writing is another: Toegye (1501-1570, a famous Korean Confucianist), however, would rather regard the two as a completely unified process, which amalgamates an immanent quality and a literary style, without isolation between them. Toegye stressed and valued the purity of the first experience, i.e., the filtered and the purified in the heart, which would flow into the second experience and purify it as well, ultimately cultivating it into a complete aesthetic (...) experience. Poetry should be solely triggered by positive emotions, being aesthetically clear and pure, with no extravagance inside. A plain and ordinary style of literary writing is thereby formed and is regarded as a natural access of transcendence to a philosophical, ethical, and aesthetic connotation which is pure, rich, and profound, 'shaping to Sagehood' in Confucianism. Emotion plays the role of a cementing force that unifies all these factors and sections for life aestheticization. (shrink)

이 논문은 亂世인 朝鮮朝 末 王室家인물 중에서 정치가이면서 書畵藝術家의 삶을 살았던 石坡李昰應(1820~1898)의 書畵創作에 깃든 審美意識을 고찰한 것이다. 그중에서도 石坡書畵의 畵題에 드러난 審美意識 중 하나인 興趣境界의 偶然欲書的 審美體現을 탐구한 것이다. 우연욕서는 흥취경계를 그 基底로 하는데, 이 흥취는 시서화 등 모든 예술정신의 출발점이자 근본 기틀이 된다. 동양예술은 하나의 작품을 평가할 때 작가의 숙련된 기교의 탁월성보다 그 너머의 예술사상의 특성·풍격·심미성을 기준으로 해서 평가하곤 한다. 이런점은 바로 우연욕서적 심미를 통한 평가 여부가 담겨 있다. 이 같은 우연욕서의 예술적 적용에 해당하는 인물 중 하나가 이하응이다. 조선조 (...) 말의 과정에서 석파 이하응의 인생은 다단한 역정을 겪었다. 宗室의 석파는 조선의 정치나 사회문화에 대한 책임을 지고자 했던 인물이다. 하지만 현실적 상황은 그렇게 녹녹하지 않았고, 이런 상황에서 그는 자신의 심경을 서화예술창작을 통해 표출하고자 하였다. 석파 서화창작의 始終에서 虛和境의 ‘心物統一’, 즉 心物이 性靈으로 통일된 찰나의 興趣境界는 석파의 예술창작정신의 또 하나의 중요한 심미의식이 된다. 석파는 자신의 글에서 반드시 興이 일어나야 그림을 그릴 수 있고, 그 흥은 단연코 기쁨이라 하였다. 따라서 그 興은 偶然欲書이고, 그 기쁨은 그 어떤 외부로부터의 구속이 없는 자유로운 정신상태이며, 우발적인 의지는 그 어떤 목적성이 없는 虛和의 경지이다. 동양미학에서 興이란 ‘感物起情’이다. 主客의 감정은 서로 소통하여야만 興이 일어난다. 즉, 興은 사물에 대하여 직관적으로 감응하고, 나아가 보다 나은 효과를 얻기 위하여 고차원의 경지에 도달하려 한다. 결국 興은 마음으로서 사물을 취함에 주체를 잃지 않고, 그 사물이 마음에 통달되어, 心物이 性靈으로 통일된 찰나의 興趣境에서 예술가의 참 모습으로 체현되고 있는 神韻의 창작 妙法이다. 따라서 석파의 서화를 통한 예술창작에는, 興趣境界의 偶然欲書的인 審美를 體現하고자한 정신이 담겨 있다고 할 수 있다. This article explores the unusually high levels of cosmetic surgery in South Korea – for both women and men. We argue that existing explanations, which draw on feminist and postcolonial positions, presenting cosmetic surgery as pertinent only to female and non-western bodies found lacking by patriarchal and racist/imperialist economies, miss important cultural influences. In particular, focus on western cultural hegemony misses the influence in Korea of national identity discourses and traditional Korean beliefs and practices such as physiognomy. We show (...) how these beliefs provide a more ‘gendered’ as opposed to feminist analysis, which allows space for discussion of men’s surgeries. Finally, we critique the accepted notion of the ‘western body’, especially its position in some literature as a more unobtainable ideal for non-western than for western women. We argue that this body has little in common with actual western women’s bodies, and more in common with a globalized image, embodying idealized elements from many different cultures. (shrink)

이 논문은 현대 정치철학자 조르조 아감벤(Giorgio Agamben, 1942~)의 부정성을 설명하는 데에 목적을 두고 있다. 아감벤은 예외상태, 호모 사케르 그리고 삶-의-형태 개념과 더불어 부정성 개념 역시 중요하게 다루고 있다. 이러한 아감벤의 부정성 개념은 헤겔과 하이데거에게 깊은 영향을 받은 것으로, 그는 자신의 저서 『언어와 죽음』(1982)과 『열림』(2002)에서 본격적으로 두 철학자의 이론을 재해석하고 서술한 바 있다. 따라서 이 논문 역시 아감벤의 부정성 개념에 이론적 단초를 제공하였던, 헤겔의 부정성 개념과 하이데거의 죽음(부정성)의 의미를 소개하고 있다. 이에 더하여, 아감벤은 동시대의 정치에서 부정성의 역할을 특히 강조하고 있는데, 이러한 (...) 주장의 근거로 벤야민의 예외상태와 폭력 개념 그리고 푸코의 장치와 세속화 개념을 중요하게 인용하였다. 고로 이 논문 역시 아감벤에 의해 재해석된 이들의 이론을 함께 서술하고 있다. 또한 이 논문의 최종적 목적은 이러한 부정성이 정치의 영역을 넘어 미학의 영역으로까지 확대되는 과정과 그 내용을 서술하는 데에 있으므로, 이 논문은 아감벤의 미학에서 부정성 개념이 작동하고 있는 방식과 동시대 예술작품의 새로운 역할을 부여하는 방식에 대해 논하고자 한다. 롱기누스는 시, 비극, 수사학에서 장엄함과 경이로움으로 경탄을 불러일으키는 것, 내적 힘이 작용하여 우리의 영혼이 고양되고 기쁨으로 충만하게 되는 것을 진정한 숭고로 정의한다. 이 글은 롱기누스의 숭고론에 기초하여 숭고의 기원과 미적 현상을 밝히는데 목적이 있다. 고대 그리스 신화, 디오니소스 제전, 비극은 숭고가 뮤즈 신의 영감을 얻어 시를 노래하는 시인으로부터 시작되었으며, 신적 열광에 사로잡힌 사람들의 광기, 격정, 해방감, 즐거움에 기초한 미적 현상임을 말해준다. 숭고는 시, 음악, 춤을 통해 탈아와 영감, 광기, 카타르시스를 경험할 때의 심미적 현상이다. 영감에 사로잡혀 자신의 일상적 자아를 망각하는 것, (...) 광기를 통해 영원한 것, 아름다운 것, 위대한 것을 보는 것, 음악적 감화를 통해 혹은 모방된 사건을 통해 정화를 경험하는 것이 숭고 현상이다. 플라톤은 숭고 현상을 시인이 영감과 광기를 통해 신적인 것을 보는 것으로 이해하지만 아리스토텔레스는 무대 위에 연출된 사건을 통해 연민과 공포, 쾌감을 간접적으로 환기하는 것으로 이해한다. 롱기누스는 플라톤과 아리스토텔레스의 관점을 비판적으로 수용하면서 신적 성질이 언어의 기술을 통해 환기될 수 있다는 입장을 취한다. 즉, 자연과 기술이 상보적 관계를 맺고 있을 때 숭고가 위험에 노출되지 않고 그 목적을 달성할 수 있다고 본다. 고대 그리스에서 숭고는 단지 쾌락이나 감정의 흥분이 아니라 인간이 자기 한계 너머로까지 생명력을 확장해 가고자 하는 의지와 열정, 욕망에 기초한 생명철학적 가치를 지닌다. ‘다중양상성’은 다양한 맥락에서 상이한 의미로 이해된다. 이 글에서 ‘다중양상성’은 음악의 미적 경험에서 지각과 의식이 신경 토대 연결망을 통해 인지적으로 동기화(synchronization)되는 방식을 가리킨다. 이 과정을 도식적으로 말하면, 우선 시각, 청각, 촉각 등 다양한 감각 자료들이 뇌의 피질 안에 분산된 전문 모듈들에 의해 신경적으로 처리‧저장된다. 심적 상태가 생물학적으로 저장되는 것이다. 이후 어떤 시점에서, 주체가 음악의 특수한 청각적 국면에 주목할 때 비청각적인 신경적 자료들은 활성화되어 중앙 의식에 합류한다. 즉 중앙 의식의 요구에 부응하여 생물학적 데이터가 심적 상태로 변환되고 현재화되며, 이에 따라 주체의 청각 경험은 (...) 상이한 지각 양상들과 앙상블을 이룬다. 이 단계에서 기억과 사고가 참여하여 주도적으로 서사적 해석을 구성할 수도 있으나 이것은 주체의 관심사에 달린 문제이다.BR 본 논의의 직접적인 초점은 음악에 있지만, 다중양상성 논제는 예술 일반에 확대 적용될 수 있다. 왜냐하면, 첫째로, 다중양상성 논제는 매체 지각의 다양성을 뜻하는 것이 아니라 예술 감상자가 작품 전체의 형식으로서 투사하는, 자기 표상적인 의식에 다름 아니기 때문이다. 둘째로, 예술 감상자가 미적 주목을 통해 가상적으로 투사하는 통합적인 작품 형식은 그가 현재 의식적으로 주목하는 작품의 지각적 면모들뿐만 아니라, 그 자료들을 추상하여 전체 형식으로 구성하는 과정에 개입하는 상이한 양태의 ‘지각 흔적’들과 개념적 사고틀이 산출하는 다중양상적 앙상블이기 때문이다. 이렇게 인지적으로 동기화된 앙상블을 가능하게 하는 것은 다름 아니라 의식 아래 차원에서 작동하는 다양한 지각 모듈들과 그것들을 연결해주는 비의식적인 신경 연결망이다. 따라서 비록 ‘신경미학’이 고차적 사고, 지향성, 예술사적 지식 등이 어떻게 예술 경험에 관여하는지를 직접 설명하기 어렵지만, 적어도 신경 토대가 어떻게 미적 경험의 대상인 자기 표상적 의식의 형성을 가능하게 하는지를 보여줄 수 있다. 禮樂論은 선비의 음악을 지배하는 핵심 이념이다. 樂은 예의 최상 단계이자 자기완성을 위한 조건이다. 공자는 악의 도야를 통해 인격을 완성하는 成於樂을 강조하였다. 예악은 수신과 치국의 근본이자 유학의 귀착점으로, 악이 가지는 和의 특성은 개인 성정의 도야뿐만 아니라 백성을 교화하는 핵심적인 도구로 활용되었다. 유가는 예악을 정치와 사회, 도덕, 교육과 밀접하게 연결하고, 악을 통해 민심을 선도하며 풍속을 바꿀 수 있다고 판단하였다. 악은 왕도정치 구현을 위한 의미 있는 도구였다.BR 풍류는 조선 선비들의 교양을 실천하는 문화적 행위였다. 선비들은 자연 속을 노닐며 사물과 현상의 궁극을 추구하고 대자연과 우주의 (...) 섭리를 깨닫고자 하였다. 풍류에 악은 필수적이었다. 선비들에게 악은 수신의 과정이자 음 자체에 대한 관심을 통해 미를 추구하는 것으로 감각적인 것에서부터 관념적이고 형이상학적인 면까지를 두루 포괄하였다. 이 논문의 목적은 ‘창발적 자연주의’라는 관점에서 듀이의 미학을 자연주의 예술철학으로 규명하는 데 있다. 필자는 듀이의 미학이 예술철학에 대한 자연주의적 전환을 한 세기 전에 이미 보여 주었다고 주장하는데, 이러한 전환의 과정을 세 번의 탐구 과정으로 밝히려고 한다. 본 논문은 그 첫 번째 탐구의 과정으로, 듀이의 ‘미적 경험’에 대한 분석미학사의 불투명한 이해와 오해를 걷어내는 데 있다. 필자는 듀이의 미적 경험과 ‘하나의 경험’에 대한 자연주의적인 이해가 영미미학에서 분석적 방법론이 도입되었던 시기에 두 번의 단절을 겪었다고 주장한다. 한 번은 알렉산더가 공식화한 페퍼크로체 논제 안에서 헤겔적인 (...) 전체론으로 해석되었으며, 다른 한 번은 디키비어즐리의 미적 경험 논쟁 안에서 칸트적인 이원론으로 해석되었기 때문이다. 그 논쟁 과정들은 경험에 대한 서로 다른 이해를 가지고 있지만, 공통적으로는 ‘몸의 부재’에서 출발하고 있었다. 듀이의 미적 경험은 몸과 마음이 분리되지 않는 질적인 성질들이 편재된 ‘통합된 경험’에 관한 해명이며, 하나의 경험은 그러한 통합성 안에서 이루어지는 지성적 또는 반성적 사고 활동의 귀결이다. 즉, 하나의 경험은 몸을 통해 경험한 질적인 세계 안에서 의미를 산출하는 ‘창발’의 과정을 예증하고 있다. 우리 경험에 대한 창발적 이해가 바로 칸트와 헤겔 사이에 갇히지 않은 제3의 시각이며, 이와 같은 제3의 길에서 듀이의 미학은 출발하고 있다.
