Abstract

At the center of this article is a reflection devoted by the author to two types of individuation (" ascending" and "descending"), a typification in accordance to which two basic forms of Chnstian Modernity arose: the Russian and the European one. According to the author, Chnstian (and post-Christian) modernity was initially based on two types of Antique-Christian synthesis: Western, associated with the name of Saint Augustine; and Eastern, associated with the name ofDionysius Areopagita. In this way, the article is particularly focused on the phenomenon of "ascending individuation", which the author considers to be basic in the Eastern Antique-Christian synthesis. It shows the role of this kind of individuation in the development of the European and of the Russian types of modernity. The author concludes by suggesting a possible way out of the crisis of modernity through the synergy of the two types of individuation. No centro deste artigo está a reflexão da autora acerca daqueles que ela considera serem os dois tipos mais fundamentáis de individuação: a ascendente e a descendente. Esta distinção, aliás, será aqueta que the vai permitir discernir a presença de dois tipos fundamentais de modernidade cristã: a Russa e a Europeia. Neste sentido, o artigo começa por demonstrar até que ponto a modernidade cnstã (e pós-cristã) estava inicialmente baseada em dois modelos distintos de síntese entre Helenismo e Cristianismo: o modelo Ocidental, associado sobretudo com o nome de Santo Agostinho; e o modelo Oriental, associado sobretudo com o nome de Dionísio Areopagita. Deste modo, o artigo concentrase especialmente na noção de "individuação ascendente", a quai é considerada pela autora como sendo básica no âmbito da síntese helénico-cristã oriental. Desta forma, o artigo mostra especialmente o papel desempenhado por este tipo de individuação no desenvolvimento dos dois grandes tipos, ou modelos, de modernidade: o Europeu e o Russo. Finalmente, a autora conclui o artigo com a sua fundamentada sugestão de que um modo possível para libertar a modernidade do atoleiro em que presentemente se encontra seria precisamente promover um profundo encontro de sinergias entre os dois grandes tipos de individuação acima mencionados
