Abstract

Le problème de la certitude de l'existence est la grande question que le XVIIIe siècle a léguée à Maine de Biran. Voulant mettre fin au scepticisme qu'induisent à la fois la position empiriste et idéaliste, Biran cherche les preuves de l'existence de l'extériorité dans une expérience de prime abord purement subjective: l'effort et la sensation de résistance qui en découle. Il veut ainsi tirer la certitude du non-moi du moi. Toutefois devant l'échec relatif de cette tentative, Biran propose dans sa dernière philosophie la voie nouvelle d'une croyance immédiate en l'existence de ce qui n'est pas moi, croyance qui ne peut cependant entrer dans l'ordre des connaissances, creusant ainsi l'abîme qu'il voulait combler entre le savoir philosophique et la certitude du monde. The issue of the certainty of the external existence represents the great problem that the XVIIIth century bequeaths to Maine de Biran. Trying to get rid of the scepticism involved both in idealism and empiricism, Biran seeks after the proofs of the external existence into an experience at first sight partly subjective: the effort and its sensation of resistance which follows. He wants to deduce the certitude of the non-ego from that of the ego. However, conscious of the relative failure of his first attemps, he suggests in his late philosophy a new way, consisting in the immediate belief of the existence of the non-ego, which belief that cannot yet belong to the knowledge's order. Therefore, Biran winds up digging a more big ditch between the philosophical science and the certainty of the world than that he wanted to fill in
